Falcons franchise is 49 years old today

Today is the 49th anniversary of the birth of our beloved Falcons. On June 30, 1965 Rankin Smith was awarded Atlanta's franchise by the NFL. Amazing that Smith paid only $8.5 million for the team! Blank paid $545 million for the Falcons in 2002. The team's worth around $900 million today.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but Rankin had to be one of the worst owners in NFL history. For a man who spent his own millions on an NFL team, he was amazingly indifferent and uncommitted to making that team better.

As much as we bitch & moan about the brain trust, we should all drop to our knees and thank our lucky stars that we finally got an owner like Blank, who actually cares about our Falcons.

On a personal note, I am perplexed and frustrated that my beloved wife, born on the exact same day as the Falcons, couldn't care less about football. So much for giving her season tickets for her birthday present...
