Let me begin this by saying..
Jake Matthews is an extremely solid pick. He's a legacy player, which every team loves, and he might come from the best football family in the NFL. Additionally, he filled an area of need and we hopefully have a franchise tackle for the next decade or so.
BUT let's not fool ourselves the first round did not pan out the way the Falcons hoped. If TD and company had their way they would have obtained either Clowney or Mack to solve our pass rushing woes. Heck they weren't even able to trade back into the first round to draft Dee Ford or Ryan Shazier like sources reported that they were attempting.
There is still hope though and while I will be the first to admit this scenario is highly unlikely, this would be a perfect way to recover from a botched first round.
Double up on second round pass rushers
With Kony Ealy, Demarcus Lawrence and Attaochu still available in the second round I believe the Falcons should target one of the pass rushers with the 37th pick in the draft and package their third round selection, with the help of additional picks, and trade back up into the second round for another one of the coveted pass rushers.
Personally the two I want in an Atlanta uniform are Lawrence and Attaochu. While it might not create the same impact as a Clowney or Mack it would definitely improve our defense.
As for safety
I believe where there is smoke in trade rumors there is fire. It has been reported that Kansas City might be willing to trade FS Eric Berry for a second round pick. I believe after doubling up on pass rushers the Falcons should package next year's second round pick, along with a later round pick to obtain Berry from the Chiefs. This would drastically improve our defense and the Falcons would have a very solid all-around team to put out on the field.
