The first round of the NFL Draft is over(thank god). The Falcons chose LT Jake Matthews with the 6 overall pick. Nice pick. Matt Ryan can finally breathe a sigh of relief and Sam Baker can finally start looking over his shoulder cause he clearly isn't safe.
It's a good thing I never did a mock draft because I would have been extremely wrong. I figured there would be no way Thomas Dimitroff would pass up on the opportunity to draft one of those blue chip defensive players. I was wrong and I will be the first to admit it. Am I satisfied with this pick? Sure. Do I agree with this pick? Absolutely not.
Look guys I understand I really do. 100 million dollar QB you have to protect him I get it. But if there is anything we should have learned from last year is that Defense wins championships. Our defense has been mediocre for so long even when we thought we were close to a Super Bowl we never were. I know what you are thinking "the draft isn't over". Yes I know but look around the league at the top defenses. They all have a top blue chip player in which the defense is built on. Seahawks/Sherman , Texans/Watt&Clowney , Panthers/TheirEntireD-Line , and heck the 49ers have at least 5 on one defense. The Falcons have none, zero nothing to speak of. Matter of fact the only player on this unit we call a defense that is even close to being considered top of his position is Desmond Trufant. And he was a rookie last year. Yes there are still pass rushers left in the draft, but do you honestly think there is anyone who is going to make an immediate impact the way Clowney, Mack, or even Barr would have made? No I don't believe so. So now we have to go another year hoping and praying on a developmental guy. Oh and Jonathan Massoquoi. I'm just not buying it.
Now don't get me wrong. With Jake Matthews protecting Ryan I believe the falcons are already 5 games better than they were last year. But seriously , can we stop Brees? Or ARod? Can we even stop Cam Newton? And the panthers have an elite defense. I just don't see it guys
