Breaking Down the Senior Bowl North Squad

Yesterday I broke down which of the top combine & pro day performers the Falcons have met with privately. I thought it would be interesting to take a look at another list of players our coaches should be familiar with so today I'll be breaking down the 2014 Senior Bowl North squad and how it relates to mseward1's list of top performers and my list of players the Falcons have met with. Thanks again to mseward1 for the suggestion!

Let's start with the top combine/pro day performers that appear on the Senior Bowl roster. I'll list them in order of their projected draft position as it appears in msewards1's post.

  • DT - Aaron Donald - Pittsburgh (1)
  • DT - Ra'Shede Hageman - Minnesota (1-2)
  • DE - Kareem Martin - North Carolina (1-2)
  • DE - Marcus Smith - Louisville (2-3)
  • S - Deone Bucannon - Washington State (2-3)
  • TE - CJ Fiedorowicz - Iowa (3-4)
  • QB - Logan Thomas - Virginia Tech (6-7)
  • WR - Jeff Janis - Saginaw Valley State (6)
  • WR - Michael Campanaro - Wake Forest (6-7)
  • TE - Gator Hoskins - Marshall (7-FA)
  • WR - Bennie Fowler - Michigan State (FA)

Now let's have a look at the Senior Bowl players the Falcons have met with since the Senior Bowl. Once again I will list them in order of their projected round using mseward1's projections where available and filling in the gaps with my own projections.

  • DT - Ra'Shede Hageman - Minnesota (1-2)
  • OLB - Marcus Smith - Louisville (2-3)
  • DE - Trent Murphy - Stanford (2-3)
  • OT - Jack Mewhort - Ohio State (3)
  • ILB - Jordan Zumwalt - UCLA (3-4)
  • TE - CJ Fiedorowicz - Iowa (3-4)
  • CB - Nevin Lawson - Utah State (4)
  • WR - Shaq Evans - UCLA (7)

Finally let's see what overlap we have between all three lists.

  • DT - Ra'Shede Hageman - Minnesota (1-2)
  • OLB - Marcus Smith - Louisville (2-3)
  • TE - CJ Fiedorowicz - Iowa (3-4)

I'd happily welcome all three of those players to the Falcons. Hageman is the least likely target of the three as he will be long gone before the team is likely to address interior line depth but Smith and Fiedorowicz both appear to be likely candidates.

I think it's worth noting that the Falcons brought Trent Murphy in to visit even after his poor showing at the Senior Bowl. Though his draft stock has dropped significantly over the last few months he would be a high value pick in the third round.

I'd also can't resist taking a moment to mention Gator Hoskins. I've done a write-up on him already so I'll be brief but I think he is the definition of late round gem. He won't be able to be a traditional tight end but he looks like he's cut from the same mold as Aaron Hernandez (between the lines at least).

So what do you guys think? There are some interesting names on the Senior Bowl roster that we haven't brought in to visit yet. Are there any players you hope the Falcons look at prior to the draft? Do you think CJ Fiedorowicz or Marcus Smith are worth the attention they've seen so far?
