To me a Fan Site should be like a local watering hole where fans can gather and discuss the truly meaningless topics of the day ie their favorite sports team. We talk about it as a fun distraction. The conversation should be fairly intelligent, fairly polite and humor should be included. When I put forth opinions I do it in a friendly and most of the time jocular manner and assume others have the same intent. If I disagree with someone's opinion I never get angered over it nor do I find the other person "insane" or "ridiculous". If interested I engage in discourse to see if they want to back up what they think. I learn a lot this way and when others ask me to explain I gladly do so. I've been persuaded to change my opinions on serious matters like the importance of having an outstanding defense for the playoffs. In every bar there are the numbers guys, the bleeding heart fans, the long time grizzled fans, the new fans, the gruff fans, the cynics, the blow hards, the sunny side of the street guys, as well as other types. Hopefully all are gathered to vent frustration, suggest brilliant ideas, discuss conspiracy theories and celebrate success of their teams.
So when someone gives a suggestion or opinion my first instinct is not to demand statistics (although those are interesting), proof, inside information, actual recorded footage of the conversation/situations being discussed, nor do I ask them for their papers proving they've been a fan long enough to even make suggestions. Rather I try to figure out why someone thinks that way. Truth is most of the opinions of most of the fans are going to be right quite a bit and seldom dead wrong. The conversations should flow according to the topic thrown out and if it sounds the same quite often, well hey, then that's how things go. Maybe someone else didn't read that opinion before or maybe a new person has a different take on it. And if someone has to have actually been there ie in Dimitroff's office in order to say something - well this site and all opinions should be reserved for team officials and players only I guess.
One last important thing: I talk to people as if we were in a bar and it would be nice if others did so too. In a bar if someone runs their mouth and starts with the insults we know what is likely to happen. It gets ugly and ruins the fun for others.
