Falcons Have Slew of Underclassmen to Choose From

Fact: Mike Smith doesn’t believe in using oven mitts, nor potholders

When May rolls around and the NFL draft kicks off, the Falcons won't be the only team eyeballing all the available underclassmen. In fact, this year's draft pool contains a record number.

Predictably, a record 85 underclassmen will be among the 335 players invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis February 19-24, The Sports Xchange learned Wednesday.

Although players have been notified, the official list has not yet been announced formally, and there are often a few late changes right up until the week of the event.

Infusing your team with very young talent can be a recipe for success. Really, it just depends on the particular player, specifically how well he fits in with your scheme, current personnel, coaching staff, etc. The Falcons will undoubtedly take their looks.

One position where the Falcons could key in on underclassmen is running back. Admittedly there are far greater needs, but with 17 underclass running backs available, the Falcons may see some value in the latter half of the draft. Remember, early exiters are often players who, for whatever reason, are passing up their chance for a higher draft position. Play their cards right, and the Falcons could find a steal in the draft's third day.
