Is Detroit Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin going to be the next head coach in Atlanta?

Mike Smith's tenure with the Atlanta Falcons has come to an end. A tenure that brought the Falcons five consecutive winning seasons with Smith at the helm but it is time for a fresh start in Atlanta.

Teryl Austin is a name that a lot of people haven't talked about as being a first time head coach.

Who is he exactly and what does his resume show?

Austin has been around the NFL since 2003 when we started out coaching the defensive backs on the Seattle Seahawks defense until 2006.

He then moved to Arizona for two seasons to coach the defensive backs and then won the job to be the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida in 2010.

Austin left Florida after just one season, not because of how his defense performed but mainly because Urban Meyer left causing the entire coaching staff to be reevaluated.

for the next three years Austin coached the defensive backs for the Baltimore Ravens, winning a Superbowl with the team and is now the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. A defense that ranks in the top five in almost every category.

Is Austin ready to make the jump to head coach?

Arthur Blank gave Mike Smith that same opportunity in 2008, so do not be surprised if our next head coach is a first time head coach.

Austin will get several coaching interviews in the coming weeks and I would like to bet that Atlanta will be one of them.

What do you guys think about that?
