Glad you guys are all signed and ready to go for camp. Just wanted to take a moment to welcome you to the team and talk about what kind of legacy you will want to leave at some point in the far-distant future, hopefully. I would guess that, for you, it would probably be most important to have the respect of your peers and coaches, right? And to be in consideration for DRotY would be a great honor too, of course.
Well, I wanted to talk to you about setting the tone for those things early, as well as setting the tone early for a different kind of respect: the respect that we, the fans, will have for you. Believe me, nobody wants you to succeed more than we do. We want to buy your jerseys. We want to come up with some chant derived from your name that we will all yell when you do something great on the field, like: "Whoooooo" for Julio, or "Spooooon" for Weatherspoon (truthfully this will be easier for us if your name has an "ooo" or "eeee" sound in it...I am looking at you, Trufant).
Anyways, what do you need to do to be embraced by this fanbase, your peers, and the writers? Well, I have aome bad news for you regarding national media attention, but for us and your teammates, it is simple: ball out.
Which brings me to our season opener, against a team you probably haven't heard of. For a largely irrelevant asterisk in the annals of the NFL, they have caused us great annoyance for many years, more years, in fact, than any of you have been alive. Your respective ascents to greatness will begin here. If you wish to elevate your name in our lore, if you wish to raise the league's awareness of you, and, most particularly, if you want to see your number throughout the stands of the mighty Georgia Dome, and hear your (hopefully alliterative) name voiced by 80,000 at once, you must begin on September 8. Every sack you get, every interception, every tackle for loss, every fumble you force or recover in this contest against the denizens of the swamp will bring you closer to undying fame within this franchise and this fanbase. Three or more of any of those in this particular game and perhaps babies named "Stansley" or "Alford" or "Malliciah" or "Brian Banks" will begin to appear in the greater Atlanta area, as well as the greater Falcon nation, in June of next year.
THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY, ROOKIES. RISE.
