The Atlanta Falcons are going to be looking around for running back help this off-season, and Steven Jackson is frantically waving his hand in the direction of Flowery Branch.
If the Falcons want a veteran back, Jackson is probably the guy. He's got miles on those tires, but he's still a hard-charging back with a relatively clean health record and a history of success as both a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. Last year he ran for 1,000 yards and tacked on over 300 in receptions.
Here's what Jackson told ESPN:
If he's saying this, it's fair to assume Atlanta's his preferred landing spot. I won't speculate as to whether or not the Falcons have reached out to him at this point, but it's easy enough to connect the dots. If Jackson won't break the bank, there's a good chance the Falcons will sign him with an eye on improving a championship-caliber team.
I will go on record preferring a young back. This is a particularly deep class, the Falcons have a couple of veteran pieces at the position already and Jackson may only be useful for another couple of years. A young back is also going to be cheaper more or less by default, even if S-Jax takes less to play in the Georgia Dome. I also think the pass rush and pass/run blocking are bigger issues than running back, but that might just be me.
Now you know what he said. Do you think Jackson is heading to Atlanta?
