What the heck is legal tampering?
The words "legal" and "tampering" don't seem to go together when it comes to the NFL, but for the first time, they're being forced to co-exist for a weekend.
Starting at midnight on Saturday, teams can contact players' agents and start negotiating. Among the many weird rules of this little tampering period are the following, according to the Boston Globe:
Period starts at midnight on Saturday and ends at 3:59 p.m. on Tuesday. So, it's actually about 87 hours long -Boston Globe
- Teams can't meet with players directly at all, unless it's the current club. They also can't use team facilities.
- Ed Reed doesn't have an agent, so he can't talk to any teams
- No visits until free agency formally opens
- If you're a restricted free agent or franchised players, forget it. You're sitting this out.
This gives the Falcon a chance to get a head start on free agents like Steven Jackson or Dwight Freeney, if they're at all interested in either. The extra time may put them ahead of the curve, though some of these agents are going to treat this as little more than a warm-up for their clients. Any jump is a good jump, though.
We'll try to keep you up to date on all the rumors that pop up over the weekend. What are your thoughts on the legal tampering period?
