The special teamer is back in the fold.
A day late, but I figured you guys weren't waiting in breathless anticipation of hearing my take on Antone Smith.
The Falcons re-signed the restricted free agent running back and core special teamer, but the terms haven't been disclosed yet. It's likely a reasonable, cheap deal aimed at locking up a guy who contributes in mostly unseen, unappreciated ways. I support bringing the guy back, since the coaching staff clearly likes what he does.
That said, there's a tendency on the part of fans, myself included, to want to see potential that isn't there. Smith isn't going to compete for a significant role even with Turner gone. I wouldn't be surprised to see him steal a handful of carries and maybe compete for a returner job, but mostly he's going to be on special teams duty, where he's usually quite good. Those guys are still valuable.
Thoughts on Antone Smith?
