Free Agency:
Connor Barwin(DE)- This is another move to get the Falcons closer to a 3-4 system.
Steven Jackson(RB)- This one is obvious.
John Abraham(DE)- Abe comes back for a discounted price.
Re-Signings
Sam Baker(OT)- not many options in the Falcons price range other than Baker.
Brent Grimes(CB)- The release of Dunta made this almost a lock in my book.
William Moore(S)- This guy has gotta come back. He is a key contributor to the defense.
Tony Gonzalez(TE)- Thats right boys, he's comin back.
NFL Draft
1st round: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame, this guy is an athletic freak and I don't think the DEs toward the end of the first are worth a look. Eifert is a matchup nightmare for the defense. Especially when you add, Tony, Julio, Roddy, and the combo of Jacquizz/Jackson.
2nd Round: Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama, this guy is a great value pick. He was a first round pick until he hurt his foot but I don't see it being to much of a problem. He has literally played every OL position and would be an instant upgrade.
3rd Round: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M, this has to happen to me. Swope ran a great 40 and has great hands. Would be a great addition to the offense and an upgrade over HD. I know, I know your thinking why so much offense? But you will see once I show you the projected lineup.
4th Round: Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU, he is going to take a year or two and learn from Asante and eventually move into the lineup as the nickelback. He will be an immediate impact on special teams and his off the field issues don't concern me because of the great locker room the Falcons already have.
4th round: Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina, this guy is a risk but a risk this team should take. He could be the steal of the draft. End of discussion.
5th round: Corniellius Washington, DE, Georgia, this is a guy that hand a very strong showing at the combine and could turn out to be a good future DE.
6th round: Chase Thomas, OLB, Stanford, I was really high on this guy earlier in the offseason but for some reason he is slipping on draft boards. He can play in both the 3-4 and 4-3 and despite falling on draft boards I think he could be a starter right away.
7th round: Connor Vernon, WR, Duke, another WR I know but at this point in the draft I'm taking best available. He is another Swope type player that is fast with good hands.
7th round: TJ Barnes, NT, Georgia Tech, here is the guy you guys have been waiting for, he is a space eater and may be able to make an impact early. He will be seen as a project by many.
7th round: Sean Renfree, QB, Duke, a QB? We are about to sign our beloved QB Matt Ryan? This guy will wait in the wings and study behind Ryan, and as a Duke guy he can contribute to the planning with his smarts. He was an exceptional player. And if Ryan goes down, knock on wood, this guy could be a solid start.
My undeafted free agent must:
Theo Riddick, RB, Notre Dame, he is a good back that can split out to play the slot. Maybe can be a fit in the return game too.
Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forrest, I'm worried about Bradie Ewing, this is just insurance.
Projected Lineup
QB- Matt Ryan, Sean Renfree, Dominique Davis
RB- Steven Jackson, Jacquizz Rodgers, Marcus Lattimore, Jason Snelling, Theo Riddick
FB- Bradie Ewing, Tommy Bohanon
WR- Roddy White, Julio Jones, Ryan Swope, Harry Douglas, Connor Vernon, Drew Davis
TE- Tony Gonzalez, Tyler Eifert, Chase Coffman, Michael Palmer
LT- Sam Baker, Holmes
LG- Justin Blalock
C- Barrett Jones, Todd McClure
RG- Peter Konz
RT- Tyson Clabo
NT- Vance Walker, TJ Barnes
DE- Jonathon Babineaux, Corey Peters
ROLB- Sean Weatherspoon, John Abraham, Cliff Matthews
Strong side ILB- Stephen Nicholas
Weak side ILB- Akeem Dent
LOLB- Chase Thomas, Kroy Biermann, Travian Robertson
CB- Brent Grimes, Asante Samuels, Robert McClain, Tyrann Mathieu, Chris Owens, Dominique Franks
FS- Thomas Decoud
SS- William Moore
Recap: The Falcons load up on offense at the beginning of the draft after signing key guys and adding solid free agent pieces. The offense becomes unstoppable and the defense has upgrades here and there.
