The Atlanta Falcons are in the market for cornerback help, likely in the draft. Desmond Trufant appears to be on their wishlist.
Tony Pauline at NFL Draft Insider reports that Trufant visited, and it's intriguing on multiple fronts. The Falcons appear poised to let Brent Grimes sign with another team, creating a hole that they need to fill either outside or in the slot, depending on what Robert McClain can do in 2013. Trufant, meanwhile, is a clear first round pick who may or may not make it to 30.
Desmond Trufant/CB/Washington visited the Atlanta Falcons yesterday....could be the pick if he's available at pick # 30...— Tony Pauline (@TonyPauline) March 29, 2013
The scouting report on Trufant notes that he's a strong, physical corner with nice coverage chops. His only real weaknesses (and they are significant) are his tackling ability and whether his press skills will translate at the next level. I think they will, and I think the Falcons must agree if they're checking in on him.
Expect to see the Falcons linked to more cornerbacks as we move forward, as well. There's no guarantee any of the three of Dominique Franks, Terrance Johnson and Peyton Thompson will make an impact next year, and the Falcons would be wise to give them plenty of competition.
