If you're like me, you've been checking the team site and other sources ad nauseum, hoping to read something about a finalized contract between the Falcons and Osi Umenyiora. I want it to happen. I need it to happen. But maybe there's a good reason it isn't happening.
No proof. But if #Falcons held off on announcing Osi Umenyiora deal because of Todd McClure's retirement day, it's a classy move.— Jeff Schultz (@JeffSchultzAJC) March 25, 2013
This seems like a bit of a long shot, and I'm not one to embrace conspiracy theories, but I know this: it doesn't normally take this long to hash out a contract. The Osi to the Falcons rumors started swirling early last week. Then he visited Wednesday. Sources indicated a physical was to occur Thursday or Friday. He's spoken publicly about how excited he is to join the Falcons. There's nothing better to jack up your bargaining position than tipping your hand. In my mind, he wouldn't comment like that publicly, not if the contract wasn't more or less done.
Like Schultz said, there's absolutely no proof this is why the Osi contract hasn't come to fruition yet. If it is the reason, then I have nothing but respect for the move. Todd McClure deserved a day all his own.
