Flacco's enormous deal could impact the Falcons' efforts to extend Matt Ryan.
In case you missed it, Joe Flacco signed a pretty massive contract yesterday. It checks in at six years and $120 million, and while we don't know the guaranteed money, on paper it makes him the highest paid player in NFL history.
It's patently absurd to give a guy unquestionably outside of the top five quarterbacks in the league that much money, no matter how stellar his run to a Super Bowl victory was. But that's not what I'm here to talk about this morning.
With the Falcons suddenly reasonably flush with cap space after releasing Michael Turner, John Abraham and Dunta Robinson yesterday, the focus turns to re-signing free agents. It also turns to extending Ryan, whose contract is up after this season. That extension could save money this year, but it's also likely to be expensive over the long haul.
If you're the Falcons, what kind of extension are you offering? If you're Ryan, how much are you hoping for? And what do you think the two sides will eventually agree on?
