Just How Low Can The 2013 NFL Free Agency Market Go?

US PRESSWIRE

It's a fair question, given how things have shaken out.

One year ago, Mario Williams signed a six-year, $100 million pact with the Buffalo Bills. It was insane money for anyone, and the deal was roundly panned throughout the year even though Williams put up 10.5 sacks.

Fast forward to 2013. Cliff Avril wanted Super Mario money. Paul Kruger wanted big bucks. Michael Bennett hoped to latch on with a team that would offer him a lucrative deal to escape from Tampa Bay. And those guys got...well, not much.

  • Paul Kruger, five years, $40 million
  • Cliff Avril, two years, $15 million
  • Michael Bennett, one year, $5 million
That is mind-blowing. None of these guys have Williams' track record or pedigree, but all were talented pass rushers with plenty to recommend them. All of them got deals significantly less than anyone could have expected, setting the tone for a market that has been unkind to almost everyone but Mike Wallace and Percy Harvin. And, you know, basically everyone the Colts and Dolphins signed.

I'm not sure how low the market can go, but this gives the Falcons a fighting chance of adding a couple more valuable pieces for what amounts to peanuts in today's NFL. Either teams are getting smarter, cheaper or greedier.

What kind of deals do you think the guys left on the market will get?
