You thought this was already a done deal, didn't you? Well sorry to disappoint, but there's still plenty of red tape to navigate.
The unanimous approval by the board of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority leaves an upcoming vote by the Atlanta City Council as the stadium’s last major political hurdle. The City Council could consider the deal as early as Monday, when it has a regularly scheduled meeting. Approval also is needed from Invest Atlanta, the city’s economic development arm, which meets Tuesday.
It seems the City Council and Invest Atlanta approvals are mere formalities. Even so, they won't necessarily happen quickly. Some City Council members, Felicia Moore in particular, may delay the process. It is a major investment, and I understand the need for proper vetting, but this idea isn't a new one. They've been working on this since Dave was a childless, homeless, Steel Reserve-chugging spanger, living off field mice and Twinkies.
Let me be clear, I'd be utterly shocked if this didn't come to fruition. There's simply to much to gain. I know some of you have mixed emotions about rebuilding our stadiums every 20 years. I get that. But think how cool the new stadium could be. Maybe they will have beer dispensing fountains, or individual hot dog grills at every seat!
