The Aftermath Of The First Day Of 2013 NFL Free Agency For The Atlanta Falcons

USA TODAY Sports

News and notes for the Falcons on March Christmas.

So that was a crazy day, huh?

After one day of free agency, we know that the Falcons won't look exactly the same in 2013. We know that teams with cap space are eager to use it. And we know there's still a few big names out there who could help the Falcons. We also know that Brent Grimes is a phantom who confuses beat reporters.

Here's where free agency stands after that wild first day for the Falcons.

The Atlanta Falcons...

  • Re-signed left tackle Sam Baker. The offense is now complete, with the exception of depth additions and a new running back. The team is serious about trying to find defensive solutions in the draft, I'd wager.
  • Tony Gonzalez announced his return. He hasn't been signed yet and we don't know what the terms will be, but the best tight end in NFL history will be in Atlanta for another season.
  • Already had locked down Garrett Reynolds and William Moore. Reynolds, in my opinion, is a favorite to start at right guard. We all know that Willy Mo is always ready.
  • Bade a fond farewell to Todd McClure, who is hanging up his cleats after a long and productive career in Atlanta. More on that later.
  • Watched Lawrence Sidbury sign with the Colts. So bet it.
  • Still have a few outstanding players to sign or let walk. They include Vance Walker, Brent Grimes, Will Svitek and Chris Hope, all useful players but none locks to return.
  • Plenty of rumors flying about who they're linked to, but it appears the Falcons will be more patient than I thought and let markets develop. Let's see what comes of it. Don't completely count out a Steven Jackson signing.
  • Cap space will be at a premium going forward. Unless the Falcons either re-structure Matt Ryan's deal or find savings elsewhere, it's likely that most of their impact additions on defense will be through the draft. That's dicey, but it is a deep class.
  • ...are awesome.
Your thoughts on the first day, and what lies ahead?
