Per an NFL.com article, the Falcons are set to release all three of Michael Turner, John Abraham and Dunta Robinson. Turner is no real shock, and the loss of Robinson essentially means we'll be offering an ageing, injury prone but Pro Bowl quality Brent Grimes a long term deal. However, releasing Abraham all but kills the pass rush: our next closest DE, Kroy Biermann, only recorded 4 sacks last season. I am stunned. According to the article, these moves will save the Falcons $15.9 million in cap space, most of which would seemingly be used to re-sign Grimes and William Moore, lock up Matt Ryan to a long term deal and maybe settle the 'mid tier' players of Sam Baker, Vance Walker etc. It will perhaps give us enough space to make a big FA move, such as adding Osi/Freeney/Kruger, but it still seems like an insanely ridiculous move from a usually conservative front office.
I was praying for Eifert to fall to us at pick 30, but with no Abraham next season I am so very worried about our pass rush and I don't see any solution other than to take the best DE available, even if it's a huge reach. Unless we switch to a 3-4 (which should suit Cliff Matthews, Kroy Biermann and potentially allow us to draft in the deep LB class), our defense might need to rely on some Gregg Williams style disguising blitzing to get any pressure whatsoever. Confusion and panic reigns in my head right now.
Your thoughts on the potential release of Turner, Robinson and Abe?
