Dear everyone in the media, we falcons fans we just like to say we get it. We understand that until we win a playoff game and exceed our own lofty expectations we will never be given any credit let alone the credit we deserve. We understand we were blown out in our last two playoff games. The Giants dominated us on both sides of the ball, and we were sorely outgunned in a shootout against the Green Bay Packers. Take it from us nothing bothers us more than the fact we are currently entrenched in a fairly lopsided rivalry with the hated New Orleans Saints, who thrashed us on national tv while Drew Brees beat marino's single season record. Did i mention they have won a superbowl? While we are 0-3 in the playoffs since the smitty/dimitroff/ryan era began. We understand that in order to be considered elite, these are the types of things that simply cannot happen and they will be (rightfully so i might add) considered against us in an assessment of our team. These are the obvious knocks against the falcons that i am sure everyone from the front office, to the team, to the fans are not only aware of, but motivated by. I say that to say this. If you will not give us credit for four straight winning seasons, 3 playoff berths in four years, pro bowl quarterback, pro bowl receiver, hall of fame tight end, being almost unbeatable at home, and being one of the most consistent teams in the nfl since 2008 at least be fair. I was watching Mike & Mike one morning and became enamored with a phrase Mike Greenberg used. ' Logical Consistency"
What a brillant term and quite appropriate to describe the desire of every falcon fan across the nation. I read an article today by Khaled Elsayed of pro football focus on espn.com on who is overrated and underrated after the first two weeks of the season. Now being a falcons fan the first thing i noticed was that the falcons were considered overrated. Not the end of the world, as i stated earlier we have come to expect a complete lack of respect from the media. However, what really threw me off was the team who he considered underrated... the Buffalo Bills. Now i have nothing against the buffalo bills per se, but picking them as the underrated team solidifies my point about logical inconsistency. The bills were crushed by the jets 48-28 in their first game of the season. Now the jets are widely considered to be offensively challenged and the " vaunted" bills defense allowed said jets to score 48 pts. Many analysts called it the game of mark sanchez's career. Now i know what you're thinking, their week two win must have been against on of the afc's elite right? Not quite, try the Kansas city chiefs. Yes the chiefs who were fresh off the falcons crushing them 40-24 and they scored a td with five seconds to play. Confused yet? yeah me too, but don't worry it gets even better.
Now see if you can follow my six degrees of rant separation. The bills get crushed by the jets 48-28, then the " 48 point scoring jets" struggle to eek out 10 points to the steelers. Now i know what you are saying the steelers are an elite defense, well if i give you that then we both have to admit that the bills are not a vaunted defense if they give up 48 points to the offensively challenged jets. Now back to the steelers. The steelers were fresh off being dominated by.....yup you guessed it...Denver Broncos. After the domination multiple media outlets declared Peyton Manning back. They said denver had a top 10 defense as well one of the top cornerback tandems in the nfl. Manning completed 73% of his passes (19 of 26) for 253 yds two touchdowns and no picks against the steelers defense that we all just agreed was elite. USA today said " What rust?" multiple media outlets said they were seeing the same velocity and touch he has always had. Espn said manning made the broncos superbowl contenders. Until a funny thing happened on the way to the superbowl. On monday night football the falcons dominated the broncos. The falcons intercepted manning three times in the first 8 minutes of the game, roddy white and tony gonzales caught the ball early, late, and often, and the score was 27-7 with 1:53 left in the third quarter. Now the broncos rallied to make it a game late, but the key words in that last sentence were " make it". The Broncos had to make the game close because it was a blowout. Now all of a sudden the same Peyton Manning who ironically has a week under his belt is obviously rusty. Now the peyton manning that was declared "back" and whose throws looked "crisp" with very good velocity was simply not healthy enough.
Weird right? IF the broncos would have won, the story would be after 4 neck procedures and almost two years off from football peyton manning returns to beat two playoff teams. You see i noticed if you beat the falcons you are a good team, but no matter how bad or who the falcons beat they are overrated. Look i have no idea how this season is going to end and i know until we correct some of our post season deficiencies we will not get any credit but at least be " Logically Consistent"
