I am so glad that I am an Atlanta Falcons Football Fan (mad alliteration alert). Not only do we have a full season of football up coming to watch, but this may be the BEST year to be a Falcons supporter. I mean with the weapons that we have, combined with the maturation of Matt Ryan and the promise of the defense, we really have a powerful unit that can make some noise in the NFL this year.
But above all that there are a few things I would like to take away from week 1 which I am sure many of you have thought about and probably already vocalized but dammit if I don't have my 2 cents.Offensive Fireworks - I'll start with the obvious first up, how good did the offense look? I mean I had high hopes, and maybe the Kansas City defense isn't the best test for our offense since they are a bit banged up, but ya know what? I don't care, it was awesome to see the entire offense light it up while also putting up points with such consistency and regularity. I mean we only punted once and that was late in 4th quarter. Sure we can go on about how Turner looked old and unimpressive or that we ended up having to settle for a fair few field goals. But more importantly, Ryan is going to be called an elite QB if he plays as well as he did this week all season. JJ and Roddy are awesome of course but more exciting more me was the fact Gonzalez was still relevant and HD got involved. God damn I enjoyed that game.
Defensive demolition - Unnecessarily cool titles aside, the defense initially looked average, real average. They gave up 393 yards against a KC Chiefs squad that I wouldn't define as exceptionally explosive, they only forced one punt and forced two FG compared to 3 touchdowns. However after half time something happened, and I don't know if Matt Cassel decided to Rage Quit or if the defense stepped up but there was sacks, turnovers and some impressive coverage. I really enjoyed what I saw, not because there was lots of holes in the defense, or that we struggled to contain what I would consider an average team in the 1st half but instead because we stopped them from scoring and we gave the ball back to our offense.
NFC South results - I don't think this weekend could have turned out much better for the Falcons in terms of results in the division. Obviously with Tampa Bay and Carolina going head to head, there couldn't be 3 loses a Falcons win, but this was the next best thing. First off I don't think RG III is this years Newton but the fact he knocked off the Saints can only mean positive things, saying that the Saints just aren't the same team after their bounty scandal, even if they get their players back. Brees looked average and the team just didn't have their usual flare, can't say if it was a one time deal but having your water boy in as Head Coach probably didn't help. In terms of the Tampa and Panthers game, neither team looked that impressive. The Bucs pulled off a solid effort stopping the run but still allowed a tonne of passing yards, I mean I don't wanna say softmore slump for Newton but I can hope right? Honestly I think he will do fine but he won't rush for nearly as many yards. Still the defense won out in that game while the offense was average at best. In other words, if either team plays like that when we face them, we should do quite nicely. I mean the only thing that could make this weekend better is if say some other teams such as the Packers, the Eagles and the Lions struggled.... oh wait.
I'm glad football is back.
