We struggled on third downs last year. Our third down defense ranked 29th in the league. But according to Mike Smith, our defense will have a radically different look this fall. Read this if you haven't yet.
Smitty had this to say about our defense:
[Nolan] is going to bring a new dynamic to our defense, giving it s some flexibility in terms of being a little bit more multiple with his background in the 3-4 defense. He’s a very good third down coach in terms of his third down efficiency. He’s got great packages so I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do with our roster.
What does he mean? He means we won't trot out three linebackers on third down anymore. BVG did the 3-3-5 thing ad nauseum last year, and it just didn't work. Translation? We will see a lot of Sean Weatherspoon on third down. If he's in on third down more often, then let's be honest, his sack and hurries total will only improve. And that's something we can all live with.
