LaRon Landry..

Laron_landry_medium

This free agent strong safety is one of the more dynamic players on the Redskins defense and in the entire league. Wouldn't you love to watch the Falcons' defense with this guy on the field? Landry is 27 years old and would instantly bring that intimidation factor to our defense. The Falcons' defense is not feared by anyone really. We all want a defense that instills fear in our opponents. Landry is a 6 foot 220 pound safety that is built like a brick house and hits like a Mack truck. We currently have a safety like that in William Moore but not in Thomas DeCoud. If your reading this and wondering why this player isn't being pursued by every team in the NFL or wondering why the Redskins would even let him go is because of his injury problems over the past 2 years. The last 2 seasons Landry has ended the year on injured reserve with problems with his Achilles tendon. Landry's only other weakness is that he struggles in the deep passing game. He is consistent though. When Landry is on the field he makes plays with his physicality and toughness. In 2010 and 2011 Landry played 17 games. He had a total of 133 tackles, 9 pass deflections, 1 interception, and 2 forced fumble. DeCoud in 2010 and 2011 played all 32 games. He had 10 less tackles, just 1 more pass deflection, 4 more interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. In my opinion, Landry outplayed Decoud in almost half the games. I think if we lost DeCoud to free agency Landry could be a good pick up. Landry should be looking for a 1 year deal. It might be a risk or a bad investment but it should be worth it if he stays healthy. We could convert either Moore or Landry to FS considering in Mike Nolans defense's he has a bigger FS than usual. Moore and Landry sound like a nice tandem to me. If we do run a hybrid 4-3/3-4 or when we eventually convert to a 3-4, Landry would have already been ready considering he has played in one in Washington. Landry is a top safety in this league when he actually suits up to play on Sundays. It would kill me to see him successful anywhere but Atlanta.

Landry could be money down the drain

According to numerous reports, he’s been advised by doctors to get his Achilles surgically repaired. If he tears it, rehab often takes longer than an ACL injury. Even when he returns it will take a season to get back to his pre-surgery performance. No one doubts he’s one of the best safeties in the league, but putting alot of stock in him could be a disaster waiting to happen.

im sure if he doesn't get resigned

hes going to look for a one year deal. He knows that if he preforms well under that one year then the following year hes going to get big money.

It's also said

That an Achilles injury is the hardest to come back from and almost nobody comes back to the same level they were before the injury. It’s really a bad one.

by Hutch11 on Feb 4, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Not a good investment

Landry was paid $5.65M last season for eight games and $3.2M for nine games in 2010. Couple that with the comment from leonw92 it would be a bad signing.

I had rather keep Sanders and give Suaesi a shot.

by mwalex on Feb 4, 2012 12:26 PM EST reply actions

injuries are part of the game

if you think hes a bad investment we might as well get rid of William Moore right? Moore cant ever seem to stay on the field..

by Marques D Chaney on Feb 4, 2012 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

That is not even a relevent comparison

but that is what I’ve come to expect from this board. William Moore made $840K last season and he played in 12 games or $70,000 a game. Landry, on the other hand, made $706,250 a game. Before this distills down to a dollar per game comparions, Moore’s WPA and EPA were both higher than Landry’s. Moore averaged more passes defended per game.

Again, based on cost and leonm92’s comment it would be stupid for the FO to sign Landry.

by mwalex on Feb 4, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I agree w/ you...

you really can’t compare them like that. William Moore is a low cost investment, whereas Landry wants a big salary. Moore has been more productive from the eyeball test. Sometimes that is the best comparison you can do. I would much rather have Moore than Landry.

wel yeah

you just compared the salary from a guy who got picked 6th overall and a guy who got drafted 55th overall. Id expect Landry to get paid more than Moore because Landry is a better player. The point i was trying to make is that this is top 5 safety when on the field why wouldnt you want him? Landry is going to sign with someone so i guess your saying his career is done?
“based on cost and leonm92’s comment it would be stupid for the FO to sign Landry”
theres no way Landry is looking for big money. Im sure hes just looking for a one year deal.

No offense meant by this...

I am a senior in high school as well as you. I would just like to note that you spoke of your aspirations to be a writer the other day. I would really love to read an article with your name under it in the AJC, but man you have to really step up your writing. There are so many grammatical errors and just plain out points with no details or explanations. You also seem to hate when people don’t take your side. You really have to make people feel like they are in control if you want to be successful. There are ways to influence people to your way of thinking with out getting mad and trying to control them into thinking a certain way. Learn to channel your energy in the right way. Getting mad is bad juju for your mojo brother.

none taken..

so i need to work on my grammatical errors and show more details. check. Im not getting mad it just seems like no one is actually paying attention to the point i was trying to make. I respect everyones comments here. I mean we all are on the same team right? I just like to discuss things out and hear further explanations when people make comments I dont 100% agree on.

by Marques D Chaney on Feb 4, 2012 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah believe me...

people don’t like disagreement. It is a fact. I am currently enlisted into the Navy, I leave a month after my high school graduation. I try my best to help get other people in. I think this applies to any person who wants to be a journalist. When people disagree with you, you don’t have to agree with them. What you do is turn the energy on them in a different way. Let them feel in control with what they are saying, but say your points in a way that won’t make them disgruntled. Explanation is key. When people feel in control, results are much better. It is almost like a psychological thing with them. Believe me bro, attitudes can change in a few simple statements.

I don't see how you correlate

not wanting big money and a one year deal. I also don’t see how “Landry is going to sign with someone” is any way related to “i guess your saying his career is done”. First, I never said his career is done. I will repeat that I said based on his salary from last year and leonw92’s reported comment about his achilles it would be STUPID for the FO to tie up anywhere near his current salary in his contract. The ONLY way I would see this is a good signing is if ATL got him for the league minimum.

In addition to paying Landry big money ATL has to many other concerns to invest in a high cost S. OL should be the first concern, along with a TE and LB, possibly RB depending on what happens with Snelling.

As far as “a top five safety when he’s on the field” goes, when he’s out for the bulk of the season he ain’t a top five safety. In addition to that there is no way to know how Landry would fit into ATL’s upcoming defense.

by mwalex on Feb 5, 2012 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

ok?

how much do you think Decoud is going to get then? Decoud made 550k last year. We’re going to have to sign a S eventually this off season. Either our own or a FA. I think Landry is the cheapest one out there. (as far as an upgrade from Decoud) Bob Sanders has a similar case to this one. Sanders had problems staying on the field so the Colts released him. The Chargers sign a 1 year deal for $2 million . As far as the other needs I think we could get a TE and LB threw the draft because those arent our biggest needs. OL is our biggest need so i agree that should be our first concern.

by Marques D Chaney on Feb 5, 2012 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

If we could

get him on a cheap deal like SD and Sanders obviously you take a chance on him. But he isn’t at the Bob Sanders level yet, Sanders missed 3 straight seasons before that happened. Some team will take a chance on Landry’s upside and I don’t think that team should be the Falcons.

by Hutch11 on Feb 5, 2012 4:49 AM EST up reply actions

Just how much do you think Landry will sign for?

Do you honestly believe he will sign for the same amount as DeCoud? DeCoud AT MOST will get $1MM and he has not missed a game in two years. It doesn’t matter if Landry is a better safety if can’t stay on the field, especially as a starter.

Bob Sanders? That is your reference point here? He played in and started TWO games for SD. He has played 50 games in EIGHT years. You want to invest $2MM in that kind of productivity? He hasn’t payed a full season since he’s been in the NFL. One season with 15 games and another with 14. Are you actually good with Sanders $1MM dollars a game? The NFL is a business and that was a stupid decision on SD’s FO. Based on your logic why don’t we sign Sanders instead? It would be cheaper and Landry and Sanders will probably play the same number of games this upcoming season.

Quit fussing...

Just say you don’t think the Falcons need Landry and that you don’t like him. I personally don’t want ATL to get him either. You seem like an unhappy person? Do you eat soup? You seem like someone that would eat soup alot. I mean what kind of person that acts like you do, doesn’t eat soup?

If making valid points is fussing

then you need to go to another board and DO NOT tell me what to say. I am uphappy with vapid posts like the one you just put up. Soup? Really? Grow up.

by mwalex on Feb 5, 2012 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yes. Really. You are probably right.

I am just saying you seem like a big ass soup eater that gets mad when yours is cold. I mean come on just put it in the microwave and cheer up. Heck even, eat a baked potato with it. It is delicious.

If you reread my post

Landry outplayed Decoud in almost half the games. I brought up Sanders because he got resigned for a one year deal and a low price. I did notice he only played 2 games but its not like Sanders planned on getting injured. We could go sign Nicks and he could get injured 1st day of mini camp. So any signing is a risk. And I cant see Decoud only getting resigned for 1MM to be honest. Why would he come back here for 1MM? I mean if he does come back for 1MM Id take him. I mean just look at the picture of Landry, you wouldnt want to see that running out the tunnel? lol

by Marques D Chaney on Feb 5, 2012 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

Landry vs DeCoud

Obviously Landry is more talented but signing a guy who has been advised (by multiple doctors) to have Achilles surgery is not wise. Achilles surgery has a longer rehab period than and ACL surgery and like Hutch11 pointed out, guys are never the same as they were before the injury. Do you remember how gimpy Takeo Spikes was on the field almost 2 yrs after tearing his Achilles?

by leonw92 on Feb 5, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

DeCoud is not the best S in the NFL

that is a given. If Landry could stay healthy then he would be a valid option and an upgrade but not if he is on IR most of the year and not at $4-5MM a year. An achilles injusry can be a career ending issue.

On your comment about injury, I agree, but if you look at a player like Sanders it’s a safe guess he won’t be playing many full seasons the rest of his career. You can also look a players injury history and make some guesses about durability. Landry has had two short seasons in a row and a possible achillies reconstruction coming up. Not good.

He is a great safety when well but he’s just not healthy right now.

by mwalex on Feb 5, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

yea i guess i need to open my eyes

Landry is my favorite safety in the Nfl and i guess since there was an opportunity to sign him I kind of overlooked his injury.

I wanna see DR at FS

I think he would be a good fit at FS and plus we could use him in slot kinda like the G men use Rolle.

by pierre02 on Feb 4, 2012 12:55 PM EST reply actions

I’d rather pass on the guy. I say this as a guy that desperately wanted to see him drafted by the Falcons but knew he wouldn’t fall to our 8th pick.

The Falcons are past the point

of any meaningful improvement being made by more churning of DBs.They have churned personnel in the Dbackfield for 14 years since the last time they were competitive on the Dline.

Lets review the list of good pass defenses,in the past half century, that weren’t at least average against the run and in the top third in the league in pressure on QBs.

I think he would be a valid choice BUT only with a few circumstantial contract clauses

It would be similar to what T.O. got in Cincinnati. Those would be that we would offer him a base salary contract close maybe 2 Yr/ $2M with about $4M-$5M dollars worth of incentives if he set personal on field requirements and achievements of that nature. Of course you have the possibility of him disclosing injuries in hopes of achieving those goals, but a GM understands it’s risk/reward type of signing from the get-go.

With being said it is extremely unlikely that will ever happen.

There are teams that are crazy enough (Oakland, Jets, Dallas, Washington) to shell out the money to this guy without all these provisions and his agents will put his fullest effort to go after those types of teams so that his client can get the most guaranteed money available
