End All Debates #1: El Macco Flacco vs. Matty Snowballs (2008)

*This is the first installment of my own created article series entitled "End All Debates" where, obviously we ebd debates. I will be giving you facts about all envolved in the debate and you decide who wins in the comments. I will post this on the sites of all envolved as well so I can see both sides of the story. Hopefully, you all won't be too biased ( ;} ). Tell me if you want more!*

For the 3rd overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select, Matt Ryan Quarterback Boston College.

For the 18th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select, Joe Flacco Quarterback Delaware.

Thus, the discussions/debates, begin. I truly they predict they will not end very soon. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco, both amazing talents, skills, and knowledge, though at the end of the day one is better then the other. This is case #1 of hopefully many debates, I am not the judge, rather the defendant, lawyer, bailiff, and pretty much everything else. I digress, nonetheless (Call me Eminem, I got mad rhymes yo') let the discussions begin! Also keep in mind this is for 2008 ONLY!

Star-divide

Joe Flacco

Att Comp Pct Yds YPA Lg TD Int Rating Att Yds
428 257 60% 2,971 6.9 70 14 12 80.3

The Wacko Flacco had an above average rookie year compared to others. He was nominated for Pepsi Rookie Of the Year and came in 2nd. He also had a decent rushing season (!) espically compared to Matt Ryan. He had a respectable QB rating and a solid Complete %. He reached a near 3,000 yards (Seems low after the Year of the QB) which was great for the season. He also went into the playoffs and made a run for the AFC Conference losing to the Steelers.

Matt Ryan *(May have more knowledge since I'm an ATLien)*

Comp Att Pct Yds TD INT

265 434 61.1 3440 16 11

Matt Ryan had an above average rookie year very comparable to Flacco. He won the Pepsi Rookie of the Year Award. He wasn't very good in the rush and Flacco killed him. He had a better % and more yards. He had a better rating (sorry N/A) and more yards. The numbers do not lie (I SWEAR I NO BIAS!) and Matt Ryan had overall better numbers.

Final Verdict

Tie, Ryan had better numbers but Flacco was alot more versatile and had some athletic performances that can't be shown in stats.

Joe Flacco

Here is a list of WR's and TE's

Wide Receivers

Tight Ends

I don't know how to say this but, they were not great. In fact, I didn't know half of 'em until I started researching. All I know is they aren't really bad, but not really great. They had a very solid Todd Heap and some other playmakers but that is really all. Not very good...
Matt Ryan
Here's the list

Wide Receivers

Tight Ends

Both Matt Ryan and Flacco did not have weapons they have now. I didn't include Michael Turner for Matt Ryan because I felt it wasn't fair because Ray Rice didn't sprout at that point. The Falcons had some recognizable faces only in Roddy White. He hit his prime in 2008 but everyone else waas either young or only solid. We had butterfingerers(?) and guys who couldn't run routes. We didn't have Tony G yet and the Ravens didn't have Boldin. Most importantly to both of us, we did not have our beloved rookie wideouts (We should all know the names).
Final Verdict
Ryan all the way, even with the constant mess-ups they still made a good amount of plays. I don't know how you all are going to count this (negatively or positively).

Flacco

Won the rookie year because, if Im not mistaken, he won a playoff game. Granted he had more help from his defense (lookin at you Brooking) but he did win, and did not have terrible performances in the playoffs. However, in the long run and as far as a potential and all that I wouldn’t give up Ryan for Flacco period. It seems Flacco has hit his ceiling while Ice Man continues to improve. Plus Flacco has that disgusting caterpillar looking thing he calls a mustache.

Flacco had an absolutely terrible performance in the playoffs

his rookie year, he was 33 of 75 for 437 yards with 1td to 3int’s for a whooping 50.8 QB rating. Yet his team managed to win 3 games, I he is a perfect example of QB’s getting far too much credit for wins.

by Hutch11 on Feb 16, 2012 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

And when I say 3 wins

I meant 2. Either way in all of Flaccos playoffs wins the only game he actually played well in was against the Cheifs who were just awful in that game.

o come on

After the past 4 years of giving up 3rd and miles and 4th and inches you are still blaming Brooking? OK, so he screwed up one play (where were the other 10 players on that play? Where was the pass rush to allow such a long play to develop…o, can only be Brooking’s fault) but what about the rest of the game? To lay the entire game on 1 play is ridiculous because it is a 60 minute game. Not a 15 second game. And getting to the point of 4 years…maybe, just maybe it was our scheme?

Dont cloud the issue with facts!

by muuzilla on Feb 17, 2012 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah but it was the turning point(dan patrick vc)

How do you give up 3rd and 26 though? Brooking wasn’t the complete reason why we loss but he had his fair share of plays.

by pierre02 on Feb 17, 2012 11:41 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I can agree with that

It is just some say that is the only reason we lost. And for any receiver to make a 26 yard play (especially one covered by a LB) means the QB had plenty of time to get to his 3rd or 4th read.

Dont cloud the issue with facts!

by muuzilla on Feb 18, 2012 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

Nope that was pretty much his first read

and it was wide open. He had okay time but nothing special the play just happened very quickly because of a horrendous play by Brooking. That play is all on Brooking but the loss certainly isn’t.

....

Matt Ryan wasnt terrible in that playoff game… yeah he had 1 pick, but i think he had 2 TDs and if it wasnt for one botched handoff, we might have won… Such is life…

OK people...

Just because I forgot to mention that Matt Ryan is the best thing that has ever happened to the United States of America you jump all over me…..

But seriously, thanks for pointing out the Flacco stats. I stand with what I said though, Flacco had the better rookie year while Ryan is better in the long term by far.

by jackofallspades on Feb 17, 2012 1:32 AM EST reply actions

Ryan is better.

Like what has been said above, Ryan continues to improve. Yes , he has failed in playoff games. I try my best to ignore this due to horrid Oline play. I am the first to homer it up and blame it all on scheme and the OC. I want Matt to win. It has a lot to do with for the first time in my 32 years we are actually freaking winning! In Matt I trust, for atleast two more years. If we don’t get to the bowl by then my tune will change. From my phone , sorry if this is jumbled. Never looks the same when I go back on PC.

I see what you did there

Hello NFL teams, are you in need of a SB ring. Is your 9-7 or 10-6 team that barely slipped in to playoffs needing some help, well, beat the Falcons and you are guaranteed a SB berth!

I know this article restricts each player to his 2008 performance but, I figured I’d share this:

I bet you didn’t know that Matt Ryan is second all time of all quarterbacks in terms of lowest turnover percentage. Only Aaron Rodgers is better. Flacco ranks 27th.

Ryans easily better if you ask me

Flacco is not as accurate, SUCK UNDER PRESSURE and gets sacked way too much. The only time ive seen him hang in the pocket and make the throw was the second half of the pats game. People brag about his performance in that game but it was against the worst d in the league and he didnt take advantage in the first half. He doesn’t make adjustments at three Los

o and ryans o line + plug in fullback this year didnt compare to flaccos
