Heyyyy why Not?
Everybody else is talking about Mock Drafts and making them, so I thought I would keep the trend going. I hope I can do this.
First off, I think that with Michael Turner being "old" and needed elsewhere, that he gets traded to the Jets for a 4th round pick.
I also think that TD will take care of some of our O-line and D-line problems in FA. Such as bringing in the following:
1) Ben Grubbs from the Ravens
2) Jared Gaither from the Chargers
Going out on a limb with this one but,
3) Cliff Avril from the Lions
With that out of the way, let us start the draft:
2nd Round Pick - Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford
There is only one way to put this, the guy is a freaking beast when it comes to playing. I was almost willing to pick Ladarius Green in this place. Yet, after further tape watching, I figured that Fleener is the better fit for Atlanta with this pick. The guy is great. Green is no pushover either and definitely should be the next taken TE. Fleener just gets the edge here based off of my eyeball test. He looks like he has the better hands. His size also is another thing that is better to me. Blocking is not that big of a problem for him as it is for other the TE's that will be available.
3rd Round Pick - Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia
Most people will dog on this pick.(No pun intended) Boykin will fall to the 3rd round I think. Injury concerns are going to turn teams away from him. The guy is honestly great and I have experienced watching him numerous times as a UGA fan. This guy can impact a game. His size is another issue that might turn teams away though. The guy has speed and wraps up on tackles. It is very rare you see a guy get away from him. His ability in the return game is also another benefit of this pick.
4th Round Pick - Cyrus Gray, RB, Texas A&M
Many Draft Experts are saying that he will drop this far. I shall agree with them on this. Gray's draft stock this year was hurt by having to split carries this past season. The guy still had over 1,000 yards rushing though, which is impressive. The guy has great great speed. He also has moves. He reminds me a lot of Jahvid Best, but to a whole different level. He also has great hands and excels in the screen game. (DK's game plan?) The guy would be a great addition to the backfield.
5th Round Pick - Akiem Hicks, DT, Regina Rams in Canada
leonw92 opened my eyes to this guy. This guy is quick and I mean quick. He is 6 foot 5 inches and weighs 330 pounds. That sounds huge but when you watch him, it doesn't look that big. He looks like he could be DE/DT hybrid. He has skills nonetheless. Many experts look down based on where he played, but this guy is no doubt one of a kind.
6th Round Pick - Blake Gideon, S, Texas
Quite the athlete. Sometimes sketchy at pass coverage, but he can hold his own MOST of the time. He hits hard and is able to wrap up. He is very aggressive which can be nice but it also bites him in the butt sometimes by jumping on fakes. He is a quality pick this late in the draft.
7th Round Pick - William Vlachos, C, Alabama
The guy is being picked on for being short. That is the simplest way to put it. It is feared that with taller QB's, it would not have good snap results. Good thing for him, we have Matty Ice. Vlachos has held his own on two national championship teams in the SEC. He kept his QB clean. The guy is very fluid with his movements, but is dogged on his arm length. The guy is very powerful though and reminds me alot of McClure. He even is kind of built the same.
I think that the Falcons will be able to pick a backup QB from the draft's leftover FA's. If not, resign Chris Redman and look into next year's draft for a backup.
There ya go, Falcoholics those are my picks. Get to hatin' on 'em!

Fleener won't be on the board
when ATL picks. I still prefer Green due to better speed but Fleener would be an upgrade for the O.
I don’t want Boykin because of his height, 5’9". ATL needs taller DB’s due to the increasing height of WR’s. I don’t care as much about vertical jumping.
I’m good with Gray but he’s projected to go in the 3rd.
I am also starting to like Hicks. He could be a Pierre-Paul kind of player.
I don’t like Gideons draft analysis. Sounds too much like Chris Houston at FS. I’d still prefer Jackson from MISS.
I am good with Vlachos except that ATL needs to invest in higher picks for the OL.
I think teams are liking Boykin a lot more than people realize
He had a really good senior bowl, and obviously has the return factor. Probably 2nd round.
I like Vlachos. It’s like Lee Ziemba (Auburn’s starting tackle) going in the 7th round last year, and then ended up starting and was pretty solid. I just don’t get why people sleep on certain SEC linemen.

Ben Grubbs
Someone mentioned on an earlier thread that Grubbs got man-handled in the playoffs. He has opened up gaping holes for Ray Rice in the run game and consistantly pushes his man down the field but he does in fact get bullied too much in the pass game. For that reason Grubbs makes me nervous. I truly believe Mike Johnson will solidify the RG spot if ATL decides to stay pat.
Another solid guard...
is Evan Mathis from Philly. He was pretty good at keeping pressure off Vick. He is 30, but would be good for 2 or 3 years at least.

Turner's not old. He needed a better OLine
With that said and the fact that we don’t have all of our picks AND we need to fill important starting positions
Free Agents
1) sign McNeill (please don’t say he only played 20 of 32 games. Six of those he held out for a new contract)
2) re-sign Lofton and Decoud (I know I know Decoud… but he did have the most interceptions out of all of our DBs)
3) sign Avril (I don’t think Detroit can afford to keep him)
Draft
2nd round- Ben Jones (future center that can also play guard this year if Johnson is not ready.
3rd round- CB Boykin
5th round- Hicks (according to this post he sounds great)
Notice the "quotes" around old...
He is getting slower though. You cannot dispute that fact. I think the time to get rid of him for some value is now. If you want another back like MT, don’t forget Peyton Hillis is going to become a FA.

Also, we don't have a 4th round pick this year...

Ok, so I may be wrong...where did the compensation pick in the 4th come from?
I seemed to have missed something…

Ahhhh, speculative then, hahaha...I really thought I missed something!
So, since trading MT won’t happen, I say again…we don’t have a 4th…lol

Why so certain?
Of all the off season scenerios, trading Turner is the most likeliest to happen. It would free up alot of cap space, allow us to draft an RB who can run as well as catch, and allow us to get a draft pick for a guy who will have next to no value on the trade market next year since he’ll be 31.
If he will
have next to no value at 31 (after producing what is sure to be another top 5 RB performance in 2012), what makes everyone think he has 4th round value now? I love how everyone is so sold on letting MT go…it truly baffles me. We can still draft the needed RB and not trade MT away and anyone we draft would still need at least one season to get his “professional” legs under him. I just think that MT has the best value right where he is at now…but that’s just me and I am biased when it comes to MT anyway.

I hear you on MT
I’d be a happy man if he retired a Falcon. I’m just saying he’d have alot more value now than next year. Most of us are simply guesstimating MT has a 4th round value in 2012 (it could be higher or lower for all I know). If you can get MT’s production for a cheaper price, it makes sense from a business perspective to trade him while he has value. Its unlikely a team would trade a mid round draft pick for a 31 yr old RB in 2013. As far as rookie RB’s needing a year to get their professional legs under them, recent history has shown that rookie RB’s can have alot of success (Steve Slaton-nearly 1300 yds and 9 TD’s in 2008, LeGarrette Blount, MJD).
