Serious Push

Hmmm... something is happening in the Atlanta franchise, that just doesn't seem quite right...

Star-divide

As EVERY Falcon fan knows, Mike Nolan is our new Defensive coordinator. As most know also, he was in Miami last year.

If any of you have been keeping up with news out of the organization over the past couple of weeks, maybe even a month about, I would have to say some of decisions that they say will be carried out our somewhat questionable. I am not in the Front Office, so I do not know all of their plans and how they will go together.

One of the most notable ones in the last few days has been Mike Nolan's decision to limit Curtis Lofton if he returns to ATL. Stating that he does not think that Lofton is good in coverage. I will not completely go against that statement. Another thing, you must remember though is the coverage schemes of BVG (remember trying to cover Harvin with Lofton? What an Idiot!). I mean if everybody thinks that Dunta can become relevant again with Nolan, why can't Lofton get better in coverage? I mean if we resign him at least we don't have to worry about having a presence in the middle.

Another piece of news that came across my mind, Mike Nolan has been talking to a player he recently coached. That player being Channing Crowder. Channing Crowder has stated subliminally, if you ask me, that he is better than Lofton. I do not know about anybody else's opinion, but mine is this: 5-0 is way better than Crowder. One) he has more productive numbers as a pure LB. Two) Crowder has been sitting out a whole season of football. That seriously worries me. Three) Our team actually has chemistry with big 5-0. Crowder is a loudmouth that could come in and mess up the mojo in the core of our D. I honestly don't know what makes Mike Nolan so interested in the guy.

This brings up another point, I think most fans of the Falcons would have to agree in saying that they would love to see Lofton come back. Spoon and Lofton are an underrated force to be reckoned with.

I think that Mike Nolan knows this is how most fans feel about Lofton. He doesn't want to be hated by his new team's fans, so he came up with a reason to have people get turned off to resigning Lofton. Plus, if you were Lofton, would you want to stay with a team and DC that has stated he is about to cut your playing time? Especially since he is about to be in the prime of his career? I think no player would want to be in that position. I honestly really think that Nolan wants us to make serious push for Crowder. I think he wants to anchor his D around somebody that he is familiar with. I have no problem with that, as long as he just comes out and announces he is displeased with the play of Lofton. I admire honesty, even if it is harsh.

I just want to know how other Falcon fans feel about this issue. I don't like the play of Crowder and I don't like the character he either displays or tries to portray. I would much rather have Lofton. Just my two cents.

torn between trusting Nolan vs keeping a very talented LB

There is no evidence

that Coach Nolan is the source of any of this.If he is the source,he should be fired. If there is a source at all inside the Falcons, that person should be fired. The Falcons don’t put these kinds of things out to the public in February.IF the Falcons have really suddenly shape shifted into an organization so immature as to air its February analysis of itself for public fodder, then it’s time for he gerneral manager to go also.

This is all fabricated rumor by unsophisticated and bored beat reporters and groupies. They are the only ones to have anything to gain from this. The Falcons certainly do not.

Yeah...

that is why I said I ain’t the front office. So I really don’t know what is going on. I am going off of what has been put out to the public.

I am purely speculating about the news giving to us.

Yes,I understand

And my intent is only to point out why the info that is floating out there is suspect and who may have incentives to float it and who most certainly doesn’t.

Change doesn't seem right?

Improving the team doesn’t seem right? I guess we don’t want to improve and actually win a playoff game, huh guys.

Lofton has been a very good LB for ATL but he is not in the top tier by any extent. He is solid against the run and marginal in pass coverage. Spoon has become the best starting LB in pass coverage and Nicholas has also shown flashes on being decent in pass defense. Lofton has always been weak against the pass. A lot of that might be attributed to BVG and putting Lofton on guys like Harvin is stupid. That being said if Lofton fits into Nolans scheme then he’ll be around, if not, he won’t, pure and simple.

The comparison of Dunta to Lofton is unrealistic at best. DR has had good years in pass coverage in a different scheme while Lofton has only really played in one. Only a different scheme will show his pass coverage skills.

This is a lot to do about nothing. Does anyone actually think that Nolan can manipulate TD into getting rid of/letting go of Lofton in order to sign Crowder? If TD is that dumb we have more problems than the Lofton/Crowder scenario.

For once...

I can agree with what you say. I completely agree about this team needing a change. I just think with the current crop of MLB available this offseason, Lofton is the best. I think he needs at least another year in Atlanta, I’d rather take a chance with him on this team than with another. I don’t think that Crowder is the answer on D. Our biggest concern should be the D-line. I think even you can agree with me on that. Crowder wasn’t that great before retiring, solid but not at Lofton’s level.

I'm not even going to say the DLine is the biggest issue

because our defensive scheme has been so pathetic for the past three years. The D has been as predictable as the O. With Nolan the DLine will improve, even with our current players.

I am a fan of Loftons but he is weak against the pass. Where was ATL’s D weak? Against the pass. He might be better with a stronger rush but time will tell.

I don’t care to see Crowder in an ATL jersey.

Yeah he might actually...

talking about Lofton in the last post. It got messed up somehow. He might fit good into Nolan’s new plan to blitz. We all know about his reputation to blitz. I definitely think we could have a top of the line blitzing LB corp. We still need somebody on that line to shore up the middle though.

God I Hope Not!!

The last thing we need is a loud mouth in our locker room.. I think Roddy has that covered. But he isn’t that bad. Thats what i love about the Falcons… Everybody leaves it on the field, stays out the media and doesn’t b*tch like most of these players now days. Thats the Falcon way baby! DB’z 4 Life

IMO, Crowder isn't full time either

If they signed him, I think it would be as depth. He would serve in a slightly smaller capacity of what has been mentioned for Lofton. I’m sure Crowder would come much cheaper, and the Falcons would have more leverage on signing him cheap since he has a relationship with Nolan and has been out a season. Plus money saved on not signing Lofton is money that can be spend on DL and other spots.

Here is a good article saying similar things.

Crowder wasn't on the Dolphins this last season

There is no way Nolan looks at the defense and decides that 5-0 is worse than Crowder, who sat out a season. The fact is Crowder could not cut it as a backup for the defensive coordinator last season. Lofton may not be the best in coverage as a MLB, but he is not going to be dropped in favor of a loud mouth LB who couldn’t make a squad last year. Lofton has been borderline ProBowl in his last few years in Atlanta.

I don’t blame Crowder for trying to get a job, but there is no way he is getting the nod over Lofton. If he gets signed as cheap depth, fine. Crowder is not going to be signed as the Police’s replacement.
