Quick discussion post for the masses tonight. Huzzah!
Simple question: can the Falcons actually play a complete game?
I have mixed feelings about this. We discussed it a little bit last night. If you're asking me, it's a trick question. NFL teams don't generally play complete games. If you want to win, then (1) win the turnover battle by any means necessary and (2) outscore your opponent. You can win the turnover battle and outscore your opponent by playing aggressive football. You can also win the turnover battle and outscore your opponent by playing conservative football. There's not one recipe for success. Football is chess in many respects. It's a violent sport, but it's a thinking man's game too. Put simply, you don't win the same way every week. If one thing is working for you, your opponents adjust. Then you adjust. And around and around we go.
I'm not trying to oversimplify here, but the bottom line for the Falcons is clear. It's not about playing a "complete" game - it's about rushing the ball effectively. Our passing game has improved by leaps and bounds this year. Our running game has regressed considerably. While our special teams play isn't as special as it once was, it's not going to make our break us. The running game, or lack thereof, will determine our playoff success.
Anyways, those are just my thoughts. I'm curious what y'all think. Is this "play a complete game" worthless mumbo jumbo? Is Dave ever going to rehab?
