The Atlanta Falcons keep winning, and Tony Gonzalez is a major reason why.
They say the best teams can win on their worst days. I'd like to add a corollary: The best teams can win on their worst days, if they have Tony Gonzalez.
As crazy as it seems, Gonzo is on track to have his best season ever. In a Hall of Fame career that will see him heading to Canton as soon as he's eligible, he is somehow on track to pass his marks in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. In case you forgot, he is 36 years old.
It's fair to say that the Falcons would not be 5-0 without him. Julio Jones is flashier, Roddy White craftier and Matt Ryan more valuable all the way around, but Gonzo's been so reliable and such a consistent target in the passing game that he's single-handedly managed to keep drives alive. It's pretty incredible.
This week, I want to celebrate those contributions. As long as the Falcons have Julio Jones and Roddy White to command double teams, Gonzalez will continue to dominate the middle of the field. That is an integral piece of the team's success, and that's not going to change unless teams start doubling him.
Be thankful that we have the opportunity to watch a legend in action. His legacy will endure, but this might be the last season we get to see Gonzo work his magic.
