What's Next For The Atlanta Falcons?
We're all trying to find our way after last night, so let's keep things relatively simple.
My question for you is this: What's coming up for these Atlanta Falcons? Will coaches be let go? Will the team signal its intent or lack of intent to sign key in-house free agents? Will they be linked to particular players?
This discussion is particularly important because it's going to help me prioritize my off-season musings. Over the course of the four months leading up to the NFL Draft, it's basically a wasteland, so knowing what you want to hear will give me a sense of what I should be writing up during that time.
Discuss away. If you've still got to get your Falcons anger out of the way—join the club—then I'd encourage you to hop into one of the recaps.

First
they need to figure out what kind of team they can be with the playmakers they have. Secondly, get people who are experts in those departments in here and that means clean house. Mike Smith may be saved, but Dimitroff drafted a lot of players that are still relatively young so getting new coaches to implement the championship design is imperative. As far as free agents they have to hold off on that until they figure out step 1.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
He is the problem
Dimitroff goes! B4 he trades away our next draft for one player… Those picks sure would look great now that sweeping changes are needed!

Goodness.
There are going to be a lot of changes, which is both terrifying and exciting.
This team, even with the winning seasons, has grown stale.
First priority of business—in line with the comment above by maxxj3—is to obtain new coordinator(s). The coordinators should be able to adapt to the roster, as opposed to stubbornly calling plays that don’t suit a given player’s talent. Look at the Broncos, they have altered their gameplan to highlight Tebow’s strengths. Can you imagine Mularkey coaching Newton or Tebow?
As for players, I have no idea on individual names, but we need a big upgrade on the o-line, a replacement for Abraham (I don’t think he returns), and secondary help.
Also, we need to figure out what we’re going to do with Turner. I don’t think he’s toast, but he needs to be limited to 10-15 carries a game. Can Rodgers be a starting RB in the NFL? If not, who’s a legitimate candidate to sign/draft to assist Turner?
GATA!
I'm all for new coordinators.
But it can’t be just any schmuck off the street. I admit I don’t know much about coordinators, who out there would be better? Let’s make a realistic wish list!
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
There are quite a few but
Whether they mesh with Smitty is another thing.
OC: Haley, Martz, Fassel
DC: Mangini, Spags, Del Rio
You know what Dave?
I just want them to change something.

Time for a new left tackle
that guy get abused by good DE’s

Got bad knees and a high motor? Well cmon on over to PHILLY, we'll do our best to put you in the right position and do a better job!
If by LT you mean Baker, then yes
If you mean Svitek, I’d have to disagree. We aren’t going to find a starting LT in the 2nd round and getting one in FA will break the bank when we have far more dire concerns. Svitek has been pretty decent and can hold the LT spot down for at least another year.
Our OL must be upgraded
I know Baker did awful at RG but he was thrown in there rather quickly. Maybe in the offseason he can work on being a big ugly somehow, maybe his girlfriend can slap him around some and make him meaner. But we have 2 guys (Hawley and McClure) that are barely pushing 6 feet and under 300 lbs…no wonder we got no push from our line….
I heard he may just walk away from the game
Rumor has it he doesn’t enjoy football. He may walk away instead of looking for a new contract. Heard that on the AM shows today.
I can totally believe that
He doesn’t look happy and the only way to explain his horrible regression is him not wanting to play anymore.
HD is gone, baby gone
Unless he reeeeally wants to stay in ATL or ATLmakes him an incredible offer. He’s a young guy with speed and experience. Alot of people here in Minnesota took notice to him in that Vikings game and they are starved for receivers. Not to mention Musgrave is the OC there.
new coordinators and possibly a hc.
I’ve been a huge ms supporter since he’s been here but this team just wasn’t prepared for the giants. That falls on the entire coaching staff. Think we need to look into another rb and te. Ol of course needs work. On defense drop dr. Make signing lofton and grimes a priority. We need to find some talent deep in the draft. Serious changes need to be made on all aspects of this team.
by ocfalcon on Jan 9, 2012 12:37 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Do you think the team can survive changes at both coordinators?
I dunno, they probably could but that’s a lot of change. Falcons should have been scoring 30 pts a game with the talent they have. If they did that, suddenly BVG defense is not the huge issue that it seems to be now. I thought the defense played much more consistently this season.
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
id rather take that chance
Than deal with another season like this. Bvg did a great job first half but that soft zone has to go. The long td nicks had would not of happened if we were in man coverage. I do know the d was tired in the second half due to the offense being pathetic. I think it’s more than just a coordinator change. Some personnel need to go too.
by ocfalcon on Jan 9, 2012 1:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
The nicks TD
Wouldn’t have happened if the safety didn’t completely whiff on the tackle.
Changing coordinators with out changing HC is odd
MM should be gone but BVG is staying(sadly). They need to relook at MR as their future franchise QB. I think his success is premature. He still needs seasoning and adding some arm strength. We can’t be where we wanna be if MR doesn’t improve.
i also feel that Smitty has some how loss this team. Promises in being more explosive has caused him to be too aggressive at times. Going for it on 4th twice shows me he knows his team can’t compete with the big boys. I know firing Smitty is an extreme reponse but wouldn’t you rather stop the inevitable?
Thos team needs a no bullshit coach. As good of a coach as Smitty is he is still too nice. MM should have been go awhile ago. Clements would be a great pick up as would Norv for OC. Smitty also needs to get “his” defense together.
by pierre02 on Jan 9, 2012 12:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions
How does one improve arm strength? He should be in the midst of his physical peak.
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
Put in work in the gym
Shoulders, rotator cuffs, wrist, fore arms, delts, triceps. But I think his arm is plenty strong already.
Roids work I hear
not that I advocate this.
I saw a play yesterday
were he threw the ball from his 30 to the 5 yard line. He has the arm strength.
by Whyte Bler 000 on Jan 9, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions
Throwing a hellmary is different
than throwing a precision pass that Brees and Rodgers make routinely. Not making unfair comparisons, but just heaving balls as far as you can doesn’t prove you can make deep passes.
Exactly
A lot of people can chuck a ball 50 yards but to chuck it 50 yards on a line, accurately is different. That is the one thing keeping MR from being elite. Elite QB’s have that deep accuracy so you fear they can score at any time. Once MR does that consistently he can be considered “elite”.
That's garbage
His arm is plenty strong enough. Joe Montana had a much weaker arm than Matty – but he was the epitome of Elite. Jeff George had one of the strongest arms in league history – he was anything but elite.
New OC, revamp the O-line and D-Line
We need an OC that has a killer instinct and creativity…I think we should let McClure walk and move Hawley to center because they both offer the same thing. Then we should use the 2nd round pick on a starting RG. We probably won’t find a starting LT in the 2nd round so we might as well keep Svitek there for one more year as he was actually decent on the line. I also think we need to use the 3rd rounder on a DE/DT/OL who dropped due to character issues or attitude-Why you ask?: Because we only draft or sign “nice guys” with pet bunnies and we get rid of the fiery guys. This team needs players with an edge who want to snap the opposing player’s neck. I’ve always wanted the high character guys who don’t get in trouble and embarass the team but waht more can happen to emabarass us any further?…Also, I know people don’t want to admit it (hell even I’ve been one of his staunchest defenders) but Peria Jerry is offically a bust. The guy can’t get on the field and has been outplayed by Peters and Walker. I’m not ready to give up on Ray Edwards yet because his knee was an issue for most of the year (even though I did not like the signing) but we have got to do something about the pass rush. I realize we don’t have to get sacks all the time, but when all Drew Brees does is move 3 inches to his left or right to avoid a defender, it gets real old real fast.
clean house
first of all, i was at the game, and i wanted to kill myself.
Defense: BVG can stay only because our defense is not that good talent wise except for LBs. We need better DLs and I dont think Dunta (and perhaps Grimes) are the answers at CB.
Offense: Mularky has to go. Ryan needs a push from a vet QB as a backup. Turner runs in quicksand, he has to go. OL obviously needs a revamp.

Here's are 4 lists of discussion i'd like to see happpen.. in no particular order
1. A list of OC and Position coaches available or soon to be available
2. List of free agents on the current roster whose contracts are up this year
3. List of possible trade bait for draft picks in the upcoming draft
4. Available free agents
And not so much a list but what package shcemes would seem to best fit our talent on both sides of the ball.
When's the last time, if ever, a team won the Super Bowl with a brand new OC?
I’m all for a massive revamp on offense, but I’m curious how quickly we could expect title-caliber wins.
It's a good point
One I’ll have to research down the line here. I think with the right OC, you could transition pretty seamlessly, but it still might take a year or two.
Sign up for a free account today to join the discussion about all things Atlanta Falcons!
If the answer is never, let's keep Mularkey but in a "Saw" trap all season
I still harbor a delusion of our first Super Bowl title coming in New Orleans in 2013.
I think its possible
I know Wade Phillips is a DC but he turned a horrible Texans D into one of the best in the NFL.
so if we keep mm you think we'll go to the sb?
Id rather lose a year or two with a new coordinator than waste another two on mm.
by ocfalcon on Jan 9, 2012 1:15 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
i think Turner is slowing down
with all the injuries and 300 carries a season. I think Quizz gets more carries next season maybe Snelling to if he comes back. The interior of the O line needs to be changed or atleast we need a different philosophy maybe go back to the old zone blocking or something
Turner doesn't have that burst
you need from the handoff that elite big guys have. I think Snelling is better than Turner right now in running and obviously receiving. I would love them to test his trade value.
Think you have a point there
Drafting a RB in the 2nd or 3rd and trading MT isn’t far fetch. Mt has averaged almost 300+ carries since he has been here. That won’t last. Might as well get some trade value for him before he is ran into the ground. He was top 3 in the league in rushing although he did have the most carries. I think snelling is a more agile runner and a better receiver out the backfield. He also has the power we need and if we draft a player like a Isaiah Pead or a David Wilson they could compliment him and Quizz very nicely.
I've said this before,
But MT does not run like a big, pounding back. The size that he has gained in ATL has hurt him, not helped him. He needs to get back down to his SD playing weight. If he does, he will regain some of that burst.
Just made a fan post
with some radical ideas. But it involves trading away certain players, drafting their replacements, drafting a center, and signing two big FA linemen.
We have the cap space to do it, and if we are smart about resigning the core defensive players and possibly cutting ties with some, it can work.
Sad day
We worried that the team would not make the playoffs early and was just not the same this year. How do we go to a playoff game and score no offensive points? Did Matt meditate too much last week, did MM lash him to a mast? Did we loose the game by being so conservative we got nothing the first two drives, using the MM game plan? Where was the up tempo no huddle stuff? Maybe it is personnel, but yesterday it was spirit and swagger we lacked? Maybe the self fulfilling prophesy?
We have to be careful now to avoid a mutiny at a bunch of levels. I think one Grimes pick would have changed the momentum, as we had none all game, even with the defense keeping us in it way past when the offense gave up. Smith needs to get an attitude or get out. Play calling was the worst all year. We act like we can run plays on playoff teams and they won’t guess what the fans have already called.
I guess mr. Blank will let Dimitroff and Smith self assess, take it apart and reassemble, if that process doesn’t look different than in the past, we will spiral downward. Too bad.
Sorry for rambling, using an iPad and not very organized in my thinking.
I posted this on the game thread and illl post it here. Blank did not become a billionaire by being a nice guy
These are not the SD Chargers that found a scapegoat and tossed him overboard. Who we get rid of is not a scapegoat, they are the problem. MM is an embarrassment everyone is finally in agreement on that one.
But I don’t understand giving BVG yet another chance. Because of one half of a game and it was a good one I’ll give him that, has everyone forgotten all the 3rd and longs we gave up? 4th and longs? Our patented no pressure blitzes? Dropping our best pass rusher into coverage more than anybody else? Zones? Soft zones? Multiple big plays per game given up? No playcalling to players strengths? 3 man rushes? The Seattle game where we went into prevent in the 3rd quarter? We have not improved in any facet on the defensive side of the ball since last season. Same inability to get off the field, same inability to get pressure, same, same, same.
I know he’s probably not going anywhere but is this how low our standards are on defense? One half of good football gets him a reprieve? Bend but don’t break doesn’t work anymore. Not in this NFL. It worked during the 3 yards and a cloud of dust not in an era where 5 receiver sets are a norm, not one where more and more teams use RB’s to complement the passing game, not vice versa.

I agree with every thing you say about BVG his defense in my opinion is a college defensive scheme
remember before he became the defensive coordinator he was the head coach at Georgia Southern i still to this day ask why did Mike Smith hire a 1-aa college coach to run his defense?I am sorry to say i think BVG as a defensive coordinator is garbage my opinion.Bring in someone who has a nfl defensive background as a coach or who has played defense before Greg Manusky the former chargers defensive coordinator is available but he is a 3-4 x’s and o’s guy
I would not want to see Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator in Atlanta
Is there a list of the top OC available right now?
I don’t think Martz would work, but there must be someone.
I like martz. but i am the only one it seems.
I think your two reasons fit our current player/talent. Gonzo old but sturdy hands couldn’t run the routes demanded, and MT isn’t a premier back imo.
I think we have the same set he had in St Louis. Two good WR and pass catching RB.
Our O-line couldn’t/wouldn’t be able to let MR stand upright to throw. a la Cutler.
There might be a list of OC that will be available after the season ends
either that are available now or OC’S who will have their contracts expire when the season ends Bob Bratkowski who is our QB coach would be a candidate he used to be the bengals OC they had some pretty good offenses under him
What's next for the Falcons?
I see the Falcons having a down year in 2012.
Here’s why
There are a lot of free agents the Falcons will have to resign. We saw already how one or two guys loss affected our team’s chemistry.
Now there will be more than ever before.
The lack of Draft picks to address some concerns/needs, and identity either with new coaching staff or the same staff that none of the players trust like Bobby Petrino will be a big problem.
Next I’ve noticed in a moon calendar pattern that every other five full moon month, features the Falcons having a bad season.
2010 and 2011 was like 2005 and 2006 (years we though we could get over the hump but had a bad finish as things got more exposed) 2008 was like our 02 or 04 season, where we made a push.
This goes all the way by to the 1980’s. Once that calendar month with five full moons comes through (every other one actually) bad results happens) 1985 ish 1990 ish
1996 2001 2007 now 2012, and the pieces fall into place.
Now it’s worth noting that a year or two after those seasons the Falcons tend to play much better and rise up, like 1991 1998 2002-4 2008, and maybe 2013 or 2014.
I think 2012 will feature a season that’s 5-11 to 8-8 either in third or fourth place behind the Saints in first, Panthers in second, and Bucs in third or fourth.
We’ll likely get swept by the first two, and split with tampa. Take the redskins game, Split the AFC West, getting the raiders and the Chargers, but losing to KC and Den. Maybe winning the arizona game due to home field advantage, but losing to the lions, and the rest of the NFC East like we always do.
everyone loses me
don’t worry about it
It only makes sense to ME
This team isn't just going to magically turn bad in the regular season.
MS and MR don’t lose home games to bad teams, and we usually play good teams real close unless it’s the Packers or the Eagles in ‘09. As long as we don’t have any catastrophic injuries I would bet on 6-2 at home losing to the Saints and maybe the Giants, and 4-4 on the road losing to Lions/Saints/Panthers/Eagles.
Who knows though. If TD drops the ball this offseason (and there is no real reason to believe he will) we could end up 8-8 or worse for sure.
At least we will actually have a normal offseason. I think the lockout hurt this team a lot more than people realize, or would have imagined. The step back we took this season can be corrected if we hire the right OC and TD re-signs the right people.

What next hmmm....
If this were any other team, I’d say what would happen next is the firing of the Offensive Coordinator by the end of the week. But, since this is an A. Blank owned football team I don’t think anything major happens. After that performance yesterday the interest other teams have shown in M. Mularky will and probably has already began to dwindle down.. With little to no interest from other teams the only way M. Mularky leaves town is if he’s fired, knowing the relationship he and M. Smith have I doubt that happens unless Smitty’s job depended on that type of decision. A. Blank’s comment yesterday nearly confirmed that it doesn’t . What I can see happening is another bold off season move, and that prediction is based solely on the fact that we have no first round pick and many voids a coming. As for the 2012 draft, I don’t see Atlanta working to get back into the first round, but I can see them making moves to land some extra draft choices in the mid to late rounds where Dimitroff is known for making things happen. Ultimately if I’m right the results next season will probably be the same, hopefully I’m wrong as usual.

OC and DC
I was hoping NorvTurner out in SD would get canned and we could have brought him in. Now? It’s one thing to say you want change, but we need an upgrade and someone who knows how to get the most out of the talent that is on the roster. For the D, the old Rams HC would be a great fit I think, but let’s see how the off season plays out.
Ditto about Norv
I’ve been hoping he’d be fired for two seasons now…
Maybe we could offer him the OC job anyway…
Bring the Falcons into the modern century
The one thing that has stood out to me is the insistence that the Falcons are a run-first team. And the truth is, it was architected to be from day one – and for good reasons. It gave a rookie QB time to grow into his role and it helped the defense by chewing up the clock. However, this style of offense is no longer the standard bearer in the NFL.
Dimitroff realized he needed to push this team in the direction of being a high-efficiency passing offense. The drafting of Julio made perfect sense. He fits the mold of a big, fast and physical receiver. Julio creates match up problems like Jimmy Graham or Megatron. Linebackers aren’t fast enough, and corners are too small.
However, Julio was NOT the only missing piece, as this season has shown. First, they failed to convert the offensive line into one built for pass protection. Secondly, we have a running back who is one dimensional and not a legitimate pass catcher. Third, we have a playbook that has failed to adapt and still demands that running backs run and and run only.
So what will it take? First – we have to retool the offensive line. We have a couple of solid starters, but we need a bull at LT. They also need a full offseason together. Second – we need to be ready to part ways with Turner. He’s been an amazing player for us, but he no longer fits the mold of a modern NFL offense. Finally – and most importantly – we need an OC that has the creativity to use all of his players and exploit their strengths. We need an OC who is willing to let one of the smartest QBs in the league run a dynamic offense while on the field. And, we need the head coach to let both of them do it – and to stop insisting it’s 1985 era football.

Post Mortem
From the moment Peter King named the Falcons as his NFC Super Bowl pick, this just did NOT feel like the Falcons year…..King is a pretty knowledgeable guy, but I’m a big Falcons fan and even I could see our shortcomings……..All the things that went right in 2010 (Nate Clements fumble in the SF game, missed NO chip shot FG, etc.) did not happen in 2011; sometimes things just don’t go your way (i.e, the Mike Cox reversed 1st down in the NO game, Julio’s drop at the end of the Houston game, etc.)…..
That said, a few observations…..
Surely the draft geeks will be cackling in glee that Dimitroff’s Julio Jones gamble was a failure…..but in my opinion, yesterday’s game (and the Wild card playoff games in general) validated his approach. The Giants had play makers like Hakeem Nix make the big play exactly when needed; and when you look around the other games, it was big plays (Thomas in Denver, Foster in Houston, Brees & Sproles in NO) that made the difference. While Julio Jones wasn’t able to break loose yesterday, I think most people would agree with me that not only is he the Falcons only playmaker, he is also the only player with the potential to get better. At this point the Falcons have a lot of good to very good players – Ryan, Turner, White, Gonzo, Babineaux, Lofton, Weatherspoon, Grimes, More…..but very few that consistently make the big plays in the big moments, or have the potential to do so in the future. The solid play of this group has led to consistent regular season success (particularly against average & below-average opponents), but has fallen short in the playoffs.
The solution is simple: we need better players. The NFC and All-Pro squads are revealing: only Gonzo got a PB nod, and no All Pro picks. Again, we have a lot of very good players, but few (if any) great ones. While TD and his staff have done a respectable job in player procurement, they have (again) found good players in the late rounds, but no playmakers (i.e, Jimmy Graham, Clay Matthews etc.) that can make the difference between winning and losing against top teams. All Falcon fans are appreciative of the stability that the Dimitroff/Smith regime has brought to Atlanta, but the honeymoon is winding down….time to step and and find the next Victor Cruz or Sam Shields.
Finally…..while the season still qualifies as a disappointment, I can also remember (as can all long-time Falcons fans) when the off-season consisted of how we were going to mess up our high draft pick after another 4-12 or 5-11 season, or whether we were going to bring in a Marion Campbell or Dan Henning as our new coaching savior…..as much as yesterday’s result stings, it still feels better to be discussing what changes we need to make to a solid foundation in order to take the next step, rather than how to escape the depths of irrelevancy that marked most of the team’s first 40 NFL seasons……
Go, Falcons !
Very good point
And well put. We do have a roster of good players, but few great ones. I personally believe Matt can be a great one, but needs to be put in an offense that lets him read and dissect defenses.
The nice thing about great players is that it only takes a few to turn the team into a consistent playoff contender. Right now, I think we need a great LT and a great O coordinator. I also think a standout safety or DE can make this a top 5 defense.
I understand where you're coming from...but not sure I entirely agree.
I’m looking at it from this angle; if you’re good enough to make it into the NFL, you’re pretty damn good, talent-wise. If you really look at it, there are very few individual Juggernauts in professional team sports who are just miles ahead of everyone else. If you think about it, for each named superstar, there was a supporting cast of very good players and coaches who clicked…and ran the table.
Think about it….
Would Brady really be “Brady” without Welker, Moss, a great O-line, and most importantly Bellicheck?
Would Jordan really have been “Jordan” without Pippen, Rodman, Grant, and most importantly Phil Jackson? (Hint: can you remember off-hand who played with Reggie Miller during those days?)
Even today, with all of the hype about Brees…think about all of contributions made by Sproles, Graham, Coulston, and yes, Sean Payton.
Not to take anything away from the individuals, but you gotta admit they all have good (superior?) supporting casts AND a coaching staff that knows how to exploit their talents.
Getting a bunch of “better players” is useless if you don’t have the coaching staff to match it. Kinda like that guy a few days ago who won the Larmborghini and wrecked it 6hrs later because he didn’t know how to drive it.
I think that, on the whole, we have pretty good players. What we don’t have is the gel that puts it all together into a finished product. That gel has to come from the top…the staff and the operations plan (and/or playbook) that they produce. I think we’ve all made enough valid criticisms to know that THAT isn’t happening with the current staff…hopefully someone will change it. Hopefully…
’till next year… have fun!
by williamandrews31 on Jan 9, 2012 7:26 PM EST up reply actions
This is very true as well
However, Jordan was able to take his team to the playoffs without those guys. He just couldn’t win the big one until they were in place and until Phil Jackson brought it all together. But, having a great player and great coach landed them 6 championships – so, if you’re lucky enough to find that perfect blend, your franchise will be in for many wonderful years of success.
Given that at least some of PB and All-Pro voting
is fans and the Northeast biased sports media (how many stories about the 49ers did you hear all year? Now how many stories about the Jets?), Atlanta could have a team that puts up 50 points a game and only gives up 10, but will still not be filled with all-pro and pro-bowl players.
in theory we had the makeup of a superbowl team
King didn’t have the foresight to consider the factor of mularkey and van gorders dynamics with the players and underperforming from the lockout.

Quality criticism will lead to better results if we act on them. BVG was the start. Mularkey next. Then we’ll see who we get for OC + DC + Free Agency (starts in 60 days btw) + draft.
he'd go back to UT
before he went to Atlanta.
Go Vols!
Offensive line is the priority
Other than Baker, I don’t think we’ve drafted an OT above the 5th pick since 1993, and Lincoln Kennedy was a bust for the Falcons (though he ended up with a couple good seasons for the Raiders). Maybe we go FA for an OT. Need a good Center prospect, too. And a pass-catching TE for Gonzales to mentor for a year…
Mularkey is an obvious cut, and old news. Just a damn shame we can’t get even a late pick for him. Hell, I don’t think we’d get a cup of coffee for him. Come to think of it, I’d buy someone a pound of columbian coffee to take him.
one thing terrifies me
about all those plans to clean up and change the whole team – its that excuse we give to the team to not perfom on the highest level when the new season arrives. it will be another process, and if the team finishes out of the playoffs altogether they’ll be saying we’re fine, the playoffs and the championship are just a couple of seasons away!
by no means am I suggesting we shouldn’t change anything. change is needed, but the FA should realize we’re not looking forward to another process, it has to be built on existing foundation.

PREDICTION: Dunta Robinson will be released if Falcons sign Grimes to long term deal.
Robinson is due $6m when the 2012 league year begins. Falcons will release D.R. rather than pay as he has underperformed for two years. The Falcons screwed up when they didn’t go after Josh Wilson or Carlos Rogers last year both of whom could have been had for a reasonable amount.
