The Season Is Over: Falcons Drop Playoff Game To Giants

There are no words of comfort to offer up after a game like this.

The Falcons were destroyed. You can't hang this on the defense, given that the Falcons scored only two points all game. The offense simply could not have played worse, and this will leave a bitter taste in my mouth for many, many months. If you're not mad, you're not a fan today.

There's not much else to say, but as usual, I'll have my full recap in the a.m.

I am done defending this team right now. There will be a recap tomorrow and an entire off-season to sort out who should stay, who needs to go and what needs to be done to turn the corner in Atlanta, but here and now, I don't have the heart to say anything nice about them. I really don't.

I would beg you not to attack each other, Giants fans or personally attack players and coaches, because I really have zero tolerance for it today. Trolling will get you an instant ban. Aside from that, you're welcome to vent however you see fit. There's a lot of anger to get out right now, and I understand that. I myself plan to smash a few things.

Let me say again, too, that it's been a pleasure to make my way through the season with all of you. You Falcoholics are the reason I do this, and even if I sometimes have to fire a gun into the air to get you to stop strangling each other, I still enjoy every moment.

The 2012 season can't come soon enough.

both sides of the ball looked pitiful

thankfully, i wasn’t expecting a win so i’m not breakin’ stuff.

I'll be the first one to say fire Mike Smith.

The man just can not get it done in big games. His teams unravel, he makes stupid decisions in big moments.

I fell like I’m going to throw up.

I don't think he'll be fired

But I think his staff will be gutted. You’re right…his teams fold int eh playoffs.

And he made some very poor decisions on the field today

In addition, he had the team, especially the offense, very poorly prepared for this one.

He did

They will keep him, but someone needs to sit down and let him know that changes have to be made. They need a smart, more aggressive offense now.

Agreed brothrbrown

Go for it, we are supposed to be a potent offense, and it was time to win a football game. The fact we did not make it twice, as well as Turner’s failure to gain a yard on third down do not deter from the decisions.

We just cannot play against the big boys.

That....

And I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple high priced players are either cut or traded to make room for salary or picks. Online needs two new players. We need a new running back. We need a new corner and som serious depth on our D.

Lots of work to do and not much to work with.

by MikeJolly on Jan 8, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

starting to question whether he should

When the person who reports to you makes moronic decisions over and over, you become the moron. After this game, MS looks like the moron. You can blame the lame 4th down calls on MM, but ultimately MS is letting him make those calls. I really hope that getting rid of MM is going to make as big a difference as most of us think. I also hope the offensive identity of this team goes with MM, because being a pounding, physical, control the clock team isn’t a good use of our talent.

The 4th down calls today epitomize how MM (and hopefully not MS) so stubbornly try to force this style of offense on our team with horrible results. Our OL hasn’t been able to get a push against most any DL in short yardage all year long, failed miserably in the attempt against NO, and that’s what we depend on in 2 critical plays. WTF!!!!!!!!!

Good game

The Falcons played hard, especially on defense. Mike Smith and Mularkey sabotaged your team with those 4th-down calls. Once the run defense couldn’t stop the Giants, they’re pass offense could open things up.

I’ll just say this. To the person who said that Matt Ryan gives Atlanta a “clear advantage at QB,” you might want a mulligan on that one.

1-4 against playoff teams.

4-4 on the road, with the wins against Indy, Car, Sea, and Det, three of which are awful, and Detroit’s almost as much of a pretender as we are.

0-2 in playoff games.

I could get into individual performances against playoff-caliber competition, but I think this is enough to prove my point, yes?

I do think you're always more down than anyone else...

While I've always been and always will be a glass-half-empty sort of guy,

our record suggested that there was no way we could keep this close. We didn’t. How could anyone expect us to suddenly morph into a contender overnight? We’re the most consistent team in the NFL, for pete’s sake! By now, everyone should be able to set their watch to the games we win and lose. If they are mediocre or worse, we win. If they aren’t, we lose, guaranteed, on the road.

I disagree, ATLsince1972

when it happens once or twice during the season – I say it;s the line.

but when we keep banging our heads on the same wall over and over again, it has to be coaching. if you KNOW that in 9 similar plays out of 10 you were stuffed which is a result of the oline being dominated – you still attempt a run?

One reason for hope

…and about the only one I can find – take a look at the 49ers. Sometimes the only change that is required is to the coaching staff. I see plenty of talent on both sides of the ball (although we need a couple of key improvements). But four years in, The Process has seriously stalled. The Falcons coacing staff will star in their own series of Survivor this off-season. The only question is if anybody is left standing.

at the same time, though

I know they’re mostly offensive players, but:

Arian Foster: UFA
Tom Brady: 6th round pick
Brent Grimes: UFA
Colston: 7th round (I think).

I agree that Atlanta’s hurt by the JJ trade, but that doesn’t mean that the only players that can step in and be game-changers are 1st or 2nd rounders

by nj_falconfan on Jan 8, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

I do agree...

but obviously something has to be done.

FA OL, from what I understand, tend to be duds because if they’re worth having as starters, they’re worth keeping. Atlanta doesn’t have the 1st round pick to spend on an OL.

I don’t see really any other options

by falconnuke on Jan 8, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

No pass rush + no pass protection + bad OC = epic fail

We all see what the problems are. The real question is will the management. I don’t want to hear excuses this offseason I want to see whether we have actual football people running the show. We wanted explosive plays…guess what you can’t do that without BLOCKING. Julio is awesome…now go get some maulers to keep our QB upright.

Abe is probably gone so we need pass rush even MORE now.

Please Jacksonville…please hire our OC.

The good news out of all of this is that we now have winning seasons and our expectations are higher than they ever have been. That’s a good thing. Just FIX THE FRIGGIN PROBLEMS.

by dr3dd1ne on Jan 8, 2012 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

…have spent some picks on the O-line. Sadly, they appear largely wasted. Baker is now officially a bust. And I don’t see anybody much standing up from their other early round picks.

It just seems

the Falcons D can’t adjust. When they have early success, opposing teams tweak their offense and next thing you know they’re unstoppable. Falcons have no answer. It all stays vanilla.

by dom on Jan 8, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

and Eli only threw for 277, when he almost threw for 400 last week,

They saw the run game worked and rolled with that, if not they might had end up with 400 passing and 50 rushing? would that have been better? I don’t think so.

Holding them to 24 was good, O’s fault not scoring

I refuse to accept

that holding a team ranked as lowly as the Giants to 24 points is good. OK, maybe. Average. Mediocre. Is that the kind of D we want? Really? I agree most of the blame lies with our offense, but let’s not give the D a pass mark. It’s not an F, but it’s at best a C. I want an A defense. Or at least a B+.

by dom on Jan 8, 2012 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

over the last 5 weeks of the regular the Giants had scored more than 24 in 4 out of 5, just saying

and one of them was against a GB team which all seems to think is unbeatable.. I won’t give a damm for statistics at this point of the season, the stats for giants was inflated by their patethic mid season

remember, despite our pathetic rushing attack, we have a top 5 aerial offense in the NFL. holding this team to 24 points was impressive.

Colossal's Rant

Im going to get this out of the way…. This sucks. It hurts and im sure its even worse inside the locker room.
Changes are going to come, but where? I think everyone agrees the O.C. needs to be looked at? But i ask you this… Is michael turner going to be enough? Our Oline obviously is in shambles and without a speedy threat to kick out… we are looking at -2,-1,0 yd gains. I think that alot of people are disappointed with roddy white… he dropped some passes this year.. he is easily worthy of a 1st round + and if the falcons need to make a drastic move.. i see that being it, but it wont happen… it doesn’t need to.
We are going to be angry… this isnt disappointment … Championship caliber teams show up in big games… bottom line. Matt Ryan was shaky today and it got worse as the game progressed. The defense had a good game plan but it fell apart because the offense put NO PRESSURE ON THE GIANTS. So Atlanta TD/ Mr. Blank i give you my blessing to do whatever it needs to do to make things better. Cut a veteran, trade a big name, do something to fix this secondary, o-line, and run game. No one will believe this team can win a playoff game until they actually do. Its inexcusable and to make no changes will do nothing but set fire to the hostility … Outplayed, out coached , outclassed. The fans expect better…

its so eerie its sad
First down: a rushing play.
Second down: another rushing play.
Third down: a pass attempt.
Fourth down: punt (or field goal, if within range).

by Erihury on Jan 8, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

A little unbelievable we didn't score this game

But the fourth down calls are where the rubber meets the road. I didn’t have a problem with those calls….what I did have a problem with (and it’s pretty much been all season) is the offensive creativity. I honestly think the coaching staff needs to go…..that includes Mike Smith. We’re too soft and too predictable to challenge the more agressive teams in the NFL and we as fans have been conditioned to want easier opponents because we know our team is soft.

I wonder about Matt Ryan…..he sees pressure and nuts up and can’t make plays on the run. There were lanes for him to run but he never took them. I don’t know if was ever encouraged to make plays when there’s space, but that in itself is a major limitation in today’s nfl

That's exactly Mularkey's problem though

He’s great at creating odd personnel groupings and using motions. Unfortunately, after all that, he calls the same tired plays out of them. I don’t care if you spread the OL out wide and put the WRs and RBs on the line, if you run it right up the gut on 3rd and 1, and 4th and 1, it’s going to get stuffed.

Feeling is mutual

Found you folks to be respectful and welcoming. Being used to hearing all kinds of hateful and psychotic things on other sites i could just not believe it that this site would not even go near it. Those of you came to our site were very honorable and respectful. i was even thinking of posting a thank you fan post this morning so that you folks can read it before the game but i was running late for work (i work Sundays but watched almost the whole game on tv there).

Am a member of all the 32 NFL team blogs here but i rarely post on other sites when we play them that week. The Fanaholic is the site that i have posted the most besides our own BBV. This week i will have to decide if i post at the Packers’ site or not. If it is rowdy i will let our other members handle them. It will be the typical that they are returning champs and 15-1 and that we are going to the colder weather like we have not beaten them in sub freezing before (07 championship game we beat Favre there). i have no doubt that this next game the Giants will show up and will be fine.

Hopefully your front office figures out to fix the things that need fixing. Your team has to dethrone and bury Saints and their fans’ dumb who dats (grrrrr).

Once again thank you for your hospitality and kudos Dave for running a great site full of great fans. of a good foootball team.

I feel bad for Ryan and Smith

I agree that it was very hurtful and infuriating to watch this game. But Ryan had hardly anytime to throw and again Roddy White dropped passes. He needs to get that fixed in the offseason. I also believe that Smith is gonna take heat but he should be back next season. The fact that people are calling for Dimitroff to be fired are insane. He has turned around a team that was horrible in 07 with their face of the franchise in prison to a respectful playoff team from the start. Julio did well in this game considering he got almost no help from Roddy. Ryan was shaky but he didn’t have hardly any time to sit back. We need a new LT and def a new O and D coordinator. Please try and hire Spagnuoulo (probably won’t happen) but at least hire a Mel Tucker or Jack Del Rio. I think both those guys would be a blessing for ATL. MM should be fired if some idiot doesn’t give him a head coaching job

by klstreet on Jan 8, 2012 4:27 PM EST reply actions

I completely agree

I was thinking of posting my own rant, but it’s hard write through the red haze. I think almost everyone in Falcondom is ready for Mularkey to go.

Our O line is a mess. Losing Dahl was a huge blow because now we have to keep backs in to help pass protect as well as setting tight ends to help block or chip on the left side of the line. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re stuck with Baker and Svitek for next season since we don’t have a first round pick and free agent LTs look like slim pickings. I can see a possible trade, but only if we mortgage next seasons draft as well (not that we have much left for that draft anyway).

On D, what’s to say? We can’t stop the pass. Dunta could easily been seen as a bust given the contract he was given and what he’s produced so far. Of course, picking up a man-to-man cover specialist to play in your zone scheme might not have been the best idea to begin with. He simply isn’t fast enough to close in zone coverage and can be burned by receivers that get a step on him. I’m not ready to call Edwards a bust given the injury he was coming off of and the adjustments he had to make pretty much week 1 with no off-season to prepare.

Special teams could use a little work as well since I believe that Weems wasn’t able to return a single kick or punt back for a TD and I would be surprised if out avg starting position was past the 25.

believe or not, LT is not where the OL is hurting.......

the pressure that hurt us all year came up the middle…….we kept the wrong guy this year in Clabo………we would have been better off with Baker and Svitek at tackle……….McClure is consistently immune to all criticism, yet, this year, most of the heat came up the middle…….his contract is up, let him retire, more Hawley over and bring in a big athletic OG (they aren’t that hard to find, much easier than a tackle)……….I really think that we can get by with one big nasty new OG next year – our biggest loss in the off-season was Dahl – by far.

I pay a lot to watch the games early in the morning. And after this performance I was wishing I never ever started watching Falcons football. I don’t think it could get any more heartbreaking than this, except for the Bills fans back in the day. I think this is the game that destroyed me. I promised myself to never ever watch an ATL sports game until they win a Super Bowl/NBA Championship/World Series and no more comments about them. I wish them well, but until they win I can’t bear this pain. I cheer for the Saints and Giants and all the other good teams out there that have their way with us. They have all proven their point: We suck badly. And I really think that firing Mike Smith and trading Roddy and letting Matt Ryan walk will help this organization. There is no way they rebound from this. Story is over. Bye folks.

Ramsdell also coached Kurt Warner in his prime when the Rams won the Super Bowl.

One of the Patriots Beat guys tweeted

and I agree. TD is from the BB coaching tree. Losses like this will equal changes. I see one possibly both coordinators gone, as well as major roster changes. We have 20-25 roster spots that need upgrading if we’re going to win a championship

by RichieGrogan on Jan 8, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

everytime that happens

a team has a better season
The Saints did it in 2006 and the Falcons in 2008.

by brotherbrown on Jan 8, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

don't think it's 20-25

but that’s just me.

Depth might be a concern at certain positions, yes, but 20-25 would mean almost every backup, and obviously there are starting positions that need upgrading

by falconnuke on Jan 8, 2012 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

I sure hope you’re right. If anything good comes from this game, it’s be seeing Mularkey and BVG discarded in favor of competent replacements.

by HotLunch4You on Jan 8, 2012 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

Mike Smith needs to go

He has reached his coaching ceiling.

by VT89 on Jan 8, 2012 4:38 PM EST reply actions

I would agree IF

We weren’t the FALCONS. But we need to make Offensive and Defensive Coaching changes. If they keep BVG I could live but certainly not MM.

by falcons11 on Jan 8, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

at worse keep one but not the other

If the keep mularkey, we better get Rex Ryan or Romeo Crennel as D-Coordinator, or Spags.

IF we keep BVG, we need and offensive wizard, like Peyton Manning.

by brotherbrown on Jan 8, 2012 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

what about the thought of actually brining in a seasoned QB vet

Let’s face it, from the second the kid got here he was thrown into the fire pan, and although redman is a capable backup there has not been any serious threat to ryans starting job as long as he’s healthy. I believe that if we bring in a seasoned vet, not saying Mcnabb but someone along his resume knowledge we may see a dramatic improvement in Ryan’s play, cause lets face it, he is probably the only player on the team the last 4 years who job security was absolute. Let’s change that up and see what a bit of competition does for him??

by Tenblaze79 on Jan 8, 2012 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

Only thing....

….is he doesn’t call the offensive plays. If he doesn’t fire Mularkey (and possibly BVG as well), THEN I’ll agree with you. Continuity is important, and let’s not forget that before Smitty we never had back-to-back winning seasons. Since him, we’ve had 4 in a row. He’s a great coach, but his coordinators suck ass.

by HotLunch4You on Jan 8, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Coach controls everything. Coach is responsible for everything.

The gameplan isn’t made independent of Mike Smith; he carries just as much blame as Mularkey or BVG. Some of the stuff you see from this team, even on offense, makes you wonder why these guys aren’t Georgia Dome janitors. I don’t mind going for it on 4th down, but the way they did it without Turner on the field, from an empty set under center, letting everyone know you’re going QB sneak when you’ve already tried to sneak it on 4th down earlier in the game and got pushed back? There’s no sense.

Mike Smith is a good coach. But that’s it, I think he’s a good transitional guy and did a lot for the franchise. I don’t dislike him and I’m not pissed at him, but sometimes you just need change.

by VT89 on Jan 8, 2012 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

Was it really Mike Smith that turned this team into a winning franchise?

What I’m saying is that in the same year MS was brought in, so was Ryan, Turner etc. I think he is given more credit than is deserved for the turning around of the franchise. Could we still have gone 10-6 that fateful year with another coach? I’m thinking yes after this game (and the other playoff “games”).

by Ntreri on Jan 8, 2012 4:39 PM EST reply actions

discussing some needs early

i think the interior of the line is weakest, remember our center is older, and a lil on the smaller side, and then the RG has been terrible. hawley gets pushed back. but as i watched a few games, i have seen clabo not looking like a pro bowl RT, i think he needs to move to RG where he can get good push. then, hawley could improve as our future center, but next issue is the RT and LT. Baker is not going to be released, i think they might try him as a RT, and its not like we have the depth to cut him,. then the LT issue comes up, although i think svitek could do okay with another year..

wow thats just the o-line, but what stands out most is protection, the great qbs have time to get to wr3 and such, i think our slot guy didnt even get a catch, ryan was hit way way too much but part of it is a crowded pocket and some is pocket awareness. it comes with time.

well i typed enough but i think its evident the oline is the issue. its known those guys minus blalock are not super talented and elite. (baker is on his last year and hasnt done enough, although i liked him as the eligible reciever protection, that looked good)

it will be interesting next season, i will be 21 in a week, and i live in nevada so it should be fun to bet on us and get some payoff being the underdogs

by justin_thefalconsfan on Jan 8, 2012 4:40 PM EST reply actions

i agree

with this how many times did Turner get blown up in the backfield this season. our O line needs some work and new players

by Erihury on Jan 8, 2012 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

I agree on the O line

Doesn’t matter how good the weapons you have are if you don’t have time to use them. One major problem I noticed is how MM would never adjust for the interior line weakness with screens allowing D lines to rush the interior.

by ErrantFalcon on Jan 8, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

There is no way that MM comes back

I agree

the poor showing by the O hurt our D. But I still think the D gave up some big plays at times when fatigue wasn’t a factor. Blown coverages and lousy schemes were a factor. As was poor tackling at times.

by dom on Jan 8, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

D played

a lightouts out 1st quarter
a pretty damn good second quarter considering they scored Atlanta’s only points of the day
and about half a good third quarter. After that dissappointment, letdown and fatigue took over.
Any score by the offense at some point between the 3rd and beginning of the fourth would have turned that into a completely different game.

ryan wasnt that bad

i think he was doing all he could, missed a few throws but otherwise didnt throw a horrible pass when he did have time. when we had baker in with the gun, he had time and fired a perfeft pass, i think the oline was breaking down too much and their dline didnt fear our o line at all so they could sell out on the sneaks, and know they can win.

also, julio with a full year under him will be special. you can see the glimpses and with some more timing and route running he will be the #1 reciever soon

How to beat Matt Ryan

Good dline pressure + cover 2.

Bears did it, Pack did it, Giants did it. He doesn’t have the arm to find the tight holes in the zone 20 yards downfield along the sideline, and he doesn’t have the Oline to wait for the long dig routes to develop.

by VT89 on Jan 8, 2012 4:49 PM EST reply actions

That's how you beat ANY QB

Pressure with just your DL is invaluable, something our team has had little of the entirety of the season.

Dropping 7 into coverage opens up all kinds of options as far as coverage schemes go. It’s tough on a QB

Blame Arthur Blank!!!!

Arthur Blank should had the stone to fire MM and BVG after last year playoff let down. MM didn’t want to be here, he just stayed cause he had no where else to go.

by SAVFALCON on Jan 8, 2012 4:59 PM EST reply actions

Blank probably flew him to those personally

After this season (and particularly this game) I’m pretty sure that anything that gets him out of town will be best for everyone.

Top 5 reasons to feel better after Falcons playoff loss

5. Reality checks are good..the Falcons, not so much
4. We can spend more time on productive pursits
3. We’ll be forced to expand our wardrobes
2. We get better draft position than New Orleans
and…(drum roll, please)
1. We won’t be so sad when our coaches get fired

To be fair

we gave up more and Ingram was hurt most of this year. Also, they have much more depth at RB and we don’t have it at WR

True, but

having injured RBs is one of the sole reasons they moved up to get him. But they didn’t give away nearly as much to get him as we did to get Julio.

depends on your definition

talent-wise, there’s not much difference between a 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th round pick. But there’s a huge difference (on average, particularly for non-skill positions) between 1st and 7th

My superbowl prediction is easier this year

The last two teams that beat us in the playoffs under the Mike Smith era went on to play the Steelers in the Superbowl that year (Cardinals and Packers). So there you have it……Giants versus Steelers.

Here we go again.

Another beatdowm in a big game that actually matters.

Matt Ryan: You’re now 0-3 in the playoffs. If you plan on being a good QB in this league, you know what you need to do. And quit being such a pussy. Fucking lead for god’s sake.

Roddy White: You are such an annoying little bitch sometimes. Quit whining, quit dropping passes. Quit talking shit on twitter. Step up in big games or get off the field.

Dunta Robinson: You haven’t turned in a good season since we signed you. What a disappointment. Sadly, you are probably still our best DB.

Ray Edwards: You aren’t worth the fucking piece of paper we used to sign you. You have been a complete waste of money.

Mike Mularkey: No need to add on to what others have said. You’re terrible. Get the hell out of Atlanta.

Mike Smith: Make sure Mularkey gets out of Atlanta, or get yourself the hell out of Atlanta.

Thomas Dimitroff: Quit worrying about looking cool in your suits and sunglasses and spikey hair. Go find a FA that’s actually worth spending millions on.

Falcons team: you got owned today and you deserved it. What the hell has to happen for you guys to win a big game? Pathetic.

A loss like this sucks, and makes me feel sick. But here’s the great thing about it. We will see a noticeable change in the coaching staff and possibly the roster next year.

Coaches Gone – MM, BVG, O line, D Line

I will take a good look tomorrow at free agents, and maybe do a writeup on what I would do as GM for fun. But I can say one thing, we need to get picks. Maybe dangle some of our older playmakers.

by FrozenFinger on Jan 8, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

ok...........

the D did more with less this season (especially factoring in injuries) the O did less with more weapons……..there will be at least one coordinator change – there has to be, or Blank and TD lose all credibility. I think MM is the more likely candidate, because Ryan has stagnated in his growth, and more weapons did not equate to more points this season.

Most important of all. While the Packers and Saints are having 15 (count em, 15) different receivers scoring TDs this season, the Falcons have (maybe) 8. We’re just not keeping pace, but (except for a feature RB and a top 3 QB) we have the skill position players in place to be FAR better.

The most likely scapegoat is MM.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

by FrozenFinger on Jan 8, 2012 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

Well your arse-ness I've already posted why

Every play, every play goes through Mike Smith. Offensively and Defensively. Sixty Eight yards on screen passes the entire season. Cam Newton threw 66 screens. Are you telling us that MM refuses to listen to his HC?

MIke Smith has said, (go back to the start of the ‘10 season when I railed against this) that “You take what the defense gives you” MMs attitude is Mike Smith’s attitude dude. Firing MM is saying to the team “We could have won but it’s Mike’s fault” which he refused to do after the G.B. d last season.

WHO TAKES WEAPONS OUT OF THE ARSENAL??? The Falcons do and announce it to the world! TD won’t fire MM because that would undercut MS. The only way and I mean the only way he goes is if MS goes. He runs the offense that MS wants him to run. Blind man can see it.

The Falcons have to many weapons for this type of passive/predictable play calling. We should be dictating to defense what we are going to take ?? That is what the Saints and Packers do and there is no way either of those offense would have been shutout in a game of this magnitude.

Your right and thats the sad part.

That is the mind set of defensive coaches. “We will take away this and give them that”. However, an offense minded coach uses packages, formation and play design to dictate to the defense and take what they want. I’m not saying MM doesn’t deserve any of the blame, Smiths philosophy would restrict any OC’s ability to be aggressive/creative.

by BlackBirdBlitz on Jan 8, 2012 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

Get rid of MM

The offense played not to lose today and we all saw how that turned out. Nothing against the Giants defense, but from the beginning of the game we played conservative and even after the game got out of hand we still would not take shots down field. There is no reason this offense should score 42 points in the first half against the 30th ranked defense a week ago and not be able to score against the 27th ranked defense. We played conservatively all day and got our asses handed to us. The crowd noise might have been a factor, but we our offense did work in Seattle.

everybody viewed us as a run-first team, but we clearly weren’t. for different reasons – loss of Ovie, poor line blocking, injury to Turner. and the run game actually turned from strength to weakness.
but we kept feeding to our weakness. to me, that’s on coaching.

The Giants are keying on the run game” but no not one of these “Professionals” could think of something that was really common sense. I don’t know man we just need to get Josh Mcdaniels or someone better. Now about our Defense…. Why the fuck is someone ALWAYS INJURED. That blows my mind how every game one of our best defensive players is “Questionable” that’s Crazy I’m starting to think as good as our D can be they are just Soft. No not every player but man I’ll be damned if we ever go into a game without a “Questionable” starter. Another thing… WHY WASN’T BRENT GRIMES PLAYING?? He played last week in a game where we didn’t need him but they keep him out of the game where we play an Elite QB? I just don’t get it. Granted our D played well considering they where ALWAYS on the field. Brian Van Gorder although the D has stepped up as of late you gotta go. When will you realize that zone coverage is what elite QB’s love to play against? I mean really dude you where playing man most of the game and it was Working. Why switch up at the end? It almost instantly allowed Eli to Score 14 points. Man I love this team with a Passion but next year if Mike Mularkey and Brian Van Gorder are not off our team next year I Sadly will refuse to have any Hopes higher than the First Round of the Playoffs.

I hear you bro...now let's see if the powers that be do

This is Smitty’s chance to make a stand and take control of the team destiny. He has to show true grit and realize that he has a responsibility to the city and the team and let MM go. If MM’s great then he’ll be fine in another gig. Regardless it needs to happen. He needs to step up and do what needs to be done.

Tebow just threw a touchdown pass.

That is one more touchdown pass than Matt Ryan had today. I’m going to go wallow in depression now.

How is it our oline regresses so much in one year with the loss of one guy? Last year we had no problem getting 3rd and shorts or 4th and shorts. We haven’t been able to get those all year, every time Turner just runs into a wall.

Could be that interior pressure.

Since Dahl was a guard, and interior pressure is so debilitating in the NFL, maybe he made a big difference.

Could be the fact that not one of our O-line guys are consistent or the fact that one person missing from last year’s O-Line breaks the link in the chain……Sounds like The O-Line needs some tweaking.

McClure needs to take some blame

………….there is no reason to re-sign him, Hawley can replicate what McClure has done, and we need far too much help elsewhere………..dump McClure and bring in a BEAST guard to fix what broke when we wrongly dumped Dahl, if we get the right OG, it will be the only change the OL needs……..it would also be good to take away one of Ryan’s 2 big safety nets – one is TG (who we re-signed) and the other is McClure (who is eminently replaceable)…….use that cast to get a beast Saints-type OG and relieve some of that pressure up the middle that killed us all year.

I Dont Even Know

Where to begin, first wanna wish abraham all the best and thank him for his time in Atlanta true classy player. Second where is HD why is he not in the formation all gonz yea hes clutch but hes not much of a threat any where else and it showed. Mike Mularkey we all know whats good there he needs to go also bvg those basic zones dont work we dont even try to confuse other teams. Also saw nfcs blogger for espn say white could be traded for a pick or OL but id keep white maybe this was just a bad yr or a star of his decline, second we need a faster rb who is threat out of the back field. The oline is a huge problem something needs to be done there these guys are basic and not athletic bye to everyone except blalock and clabo. Im sure TD will make the right changes and on D leave everyone changin schemes can help a d out alot see texans, 49ers and i dont mean switch to 3-4 or maybe we could

My Opinion.....as if it MATTers.

First on my wish list are 2 new Coordinators: bye Mularkey and Van Gorder.

Second: Let’s stop playing in this soft Zone coverage scheme…….doesn’t work, never will in this Pass Happy Era of NFL. And How about some blitzes up the middle, stunting, and dropping a DE into coverage once in a while…….seriously.

Third: Let’s throw to other receivers like Douglas, Weems, Rodgers, Palmer, etc…..

And Lastly: Please for the Love of little Baby Jesus, let’s get some fresh runners into the mix……Turner is a beast, but has no East-West movement, and his running is very predictable and at times disheartening.

Comments are welcome!

……but, repeat after me (it will help)……….“Turner is NOT a beast”………less celebrated guys who are his size (Jacobs, and P Thomas) have shown far more beastness in this post-season than Turner – time to say – “buh-bye”

His time management was horrendous at the end of the 1st half and I was not happy when we punted at the Giants 40 on 4th and 1, right after we get the safety and have the momentum, for a 25 yard difference in field position( of course the Giants drove down the field for a TD anyways)

Tim Tebow and the Broncos have put up 20 points on the Steelers and the Falcons (with all our weapons) get shut out. There is absolutely no excuse for the lack of preparation, poor game planing, bad decision making (4th downs) and bad play calling. Joe Buck reaffirmed that he is in fact a complete jackass when stated at the beginning of the game that Atlanta has a great Oline. And I know that’s what he said because I had only had one beer at that point.

That guy would appeal to a pro player in a heartbeat. He’s as angry as anyone on the sidelines and he runs a pretty vicious 3-4.

I think we could make it work

Sid/Biermann are small for DEs if I recall correctly, they could be our stand-up rushers. Corey Peters can play NT. He’s pretty big. Jerry/Walker/Babs can play end. Could even leave Babs in his old 3-Tech with the rush end on his side.

Spoon/Lofton/Nicks could be our ILBs, and our DBs don’t need to be any different I think.

Maybe it would work

But I don’t think anything that drastic will change while Smith is HC.

Why is it so drastic?

Because Smith was a DC

This is his defense as much as its BVG’s. He wouldn’t let BVG put a game plan together that he didn’t approve of, so I don’t see him being for someone who runs a 3-4.

why not blame the Team President? The GM? The owner? I mean, by your logic they’re just as responsible and they’re all above MS in the Team hierarchy… Sometimes it’s just the coordinator’s fault.

That's an asinine comment

Mike Peterson played for Jax when Smith was the DC there. He’s said they ran basically the same defense as the Falcons do now. That’s why Smith shares the blame for some of the defensive issues.

You said yesterday "He has extensive pro experience"

to which I replied he was a QB coach for one season in the pros.

He was a QB who didn’t really do anything special in his career.

And I pointed out that Singletary, a HOFer, wasn’t a good coach, so extensive pro playing experience can’t necessarily be used as a meter for how good a coach will be.

SF took a pretty big risk with him, and it paid huge dividends.

Nick Saban’s probably the best coach in college football and he failed hard in the pros, so college HC experience doesn’t mean anything, either.

I didn't say extensive playing experience and backup

QBs make good coaches. I don’t care about Harbaugh’s HC experience other than it shows he’s a good organizer. I’m against bringing a college guy into a team that despite the last two playoff games, is on the verge of something big.

Nervous Nellies

Hi Guys,

When our owner commissioned the search of what makes franchises successful, then hired Dimitroff I was stoked. A long suffering Falcons’ fan, I was prepared to play the long game with him, and finally, finally lay the foundation for long-term success.

But after four years, I am finding that this group has a case of the nerves. They get scared, and I hate to say it but it needs to be said, as it has been recently by many people.

Many examples all season, and today was no exception.

Ryan falls down trying to reach first down. Turner cannot make a yard. We cannot make a yard, twice. Roddy drops balls. Gonzalez cannot get open. Everyone goes down when touched, seeming that only Julio has the chops to break a tackle.

We cannot get our elite receivers open? Why?

Now we have few picks, which is why we re-signed Gonzalez I bet you because he can’t get open during big games and falls down once touched.

I hope Dimitroff’s eye for talent gets us some offensive line help and defensive line help because we simply are pushed out of the way with the good teams.

Mularkey has to go. He served us well to this point, and did you notice when we ran the reverse with Jones, he gained a first down? He should be the go to man during blitzes, but we don’t.

Roddy White is not big game material, and frankly Matty Ice gets a little too cold when he has to create something.

This team, falls apart each and every time. I am tired of it and I apologize for being so negative, because I used to believe that TD would get us there. He still might, but he must adjust and get us some gamers.

We have no gamers, and our lines suck.

Mr. Mustard

by Mr. Mustard on Jan 8, 2012 6:36 PM EST reply actions

Our receivers had trouble getting open today

because the Giants didn’t have to rush anyone other than the Dline, so they were able to drop 7 people into coverage. You also have to consider that they had to max protect for Ryan a good deal of the time, so he had even fewer receiving options down the field.

The Oline is where the biggest problem on the team lies IMO. Ryan has his issues, Gonzo is old, and Roddy has had a bad case of the drops this year, no glossing over any of that. But the big thing to me is the Oline.

best comment here so far Mr. Mustard....

you’re dead on……….except for DL – I disagree there – we need another pass rusher, Edwards and Jerry are busts, but the rest of the DL is plenty solid enough………..

The most disturbing thing to me of all today is that MS played more nervous today than the king of all Nervous-Nellies – Tom Coughlin.

Does anybody think that Arty could pursuade Cowher to come in town. He would bring in the much needed attitude that this falcons team is clearly missing. IMO its about time we start questioning Smitty's requirments.

“We take what the defense gives us” is a defense coaches mentality and the Falcons have to much talent to have that kind of passive / predictable play calling and/or scheme. Any OC we bring in will be handcuffed under that type of philosophy.

Time for NFL Draft 2012. Let’s forget the drafts of the immediate past and hope we can bring back the good draft ghost of 2008.

My guess is we use two draft pics on offensive linemen. Hopefully there’s a solid athletic TE available in later rounds.

This two shall pass, but for the players from our best Falcons draft in history 2008 I wish we’d see those players continuing to improve instead of flatlining.

Ok i’m off. Falcons did much better this year overall than I expected, so been a good year. We still need to add elites athletes instead of relying on overachievers from smaller schools.

Turner

He is a great north -south runner but has no speed to bouce play out or do cutback. That hurts the running game.

by Rippers on Jan 8, 2012 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

Well if Turner would stop tip toeing up to the line and run with some authority then may be would could gain 1 yard on 3rd or 4th down. IMO Snelling hits the hole much faster and runs with much more aggression.

Gotta love the way they play D there. They play like they want to win. not lose. Did not give Ben time to launch the last second bomb to end zone. They blitzed and took Ben down! Thats what I am talking about.

I want MM fired. I’m a STH, my family are all STH. I’ve watched every season. I’m just not going to get my hopes up when all my education and experience say “Look, did you see anybody out there pissed off?” No, never. It’s we’ve got to get it fixed and we will. We have lost five consecutive games to G.B. and N.O. I want people to be at least as pissed as I am.

I saw plenty of O players pissed off

Did you see turner’s face after the 2nd fourth down wiff when he wasn’t even on the field. This is why Blank fired Reeves. Was Reeves a bad coach? No? He lost control of the players. These offensive players aren’t going to play hard for MM anymore period. I could see that much on their faces. Blank isn’t oblivious to that kind of clubhouse dynamic.

Content With Average

I’m sorry, but as a fan for 14 yrs I’ve never seen such a talented team go to waste like this. This team is VERY content with BELOW than average play at best. We shouldn’t even be having this discussion based on who we pay millions of dollars to. This team seems to be built on average expectations no matter what our coaches, owner, players, or fans say or believe. Outside of 1st half play for tha whole season, I have never seen such a non-motivated team in all my yrs as a fan. There was no anger, frustration, intensity, nothing. This team has frustrated me to tha point where I’m considering not even paying for Sunday Ticket next season….sorry, but we’ve shown nothing but mediocrity within this organization.

Winds of change...

do not need to become a tornado. It just needs to blow in the right areas from the right direction.

Fire MM? HELL YES! Fire BVG? HELL YES! Put MS on the hot seat? Most definitely.
Dump Ryan or White as has been suggested? HELL NO!

For all the changes that have happened to the league the game of football is still won and lost in the trenches. And sadly the Falcons go to war with no weapons on one front and a beat up old rifle on the other. The offensive line has lived up to its name the last several years as they have just been plain offensive to watch. The D line I would feel bad for if they weren’t stealing a good chunk of the salary cap for doing almost nothing. But honestly you could run down the roster and see under achievers at every position based off of where we drafted them or how much we paid for them in the off season.

So were does that lead us? The coaches aren’t doing well. The players we have are wrong for the schemes the coaches want to run. The players play like they only have to show up to collect a pay check. Kind of sounds like the man in charge of hiring, firing, drafting and signing free agents has been asleep at the helm.

I have said before that this team lacks an identity. They play call the offense like we are power running team and draft like we are a run and gun. They call defense like we have “the greatest show on turf” for an offense yet expect them to bail out the inept offense game after game.

So what is the solution? To me it is simple. You either need to change the players you have to match the schemes you run or you change the schemes you run to match your players. Changing the schemes to match your players is definitely the easier one to do just ask the Bears. They shipped multiple players off because they didn’t fit Martz’s plans and now he is gone and the good players they got rid off and doing well elsewhere. So dump MM and BVG. Tell both MS and TD they must do much much better if they want to stay beyond 2012.

Sorry that this is so long winded but thanks for reading anyways.

Exactly

It is almost like no one talks to each other in the front office. Why do you pay big money to DR if you aren’t going to use him in a scheme that would give him the numbers you are paying him for? Why trade all those picks for JJ if it means you aren’t going to use the other 3 WRs on the roster? Either the coaching staff aren’t telling TD what they plan to do or they are and he doesn’t understand what they mean.

Well put

Sign quality man-to-man defenders for an all-zone scheme; sign Julio Jones but then claim to be a running time (when the line’s not good enough to push for a yard). Personnel philosophy doesn’t seem to match coaching philosophy, and you’re dead right that it’s a whole lot easier to change OC and DC than to blow up your entire playing staff and start again.

When Falcons open up and fit players abilities like they do in Denver we could feel that.

by Rippers on Jan 8, 2012 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

It's all about the lines

With few exceptions, there are no potent passing attacks in the league that don’t also have very good offensive lines. Whether it’s Detroit, GB or NO – they all did a fairly good job of protecting the QBs and giving them time to throw.

On the flip side, you need your front four to provide pressure and for blitz packages to work every now and then.

The Falcons do have many of the personnel that can success – they’re just not in the right places. We need a retooled OLine to provide time for a big passing attack and we need some young and fired-up DLinemen to absolutely harass QBs.

by The DW on Jan 8, 2012 8:28 PM EST reply actions

Good offenses can get by with mediocre line play.

They just need proper scheming something we wouldn’t know about. Scheming to hide your weakness?? Are you a loud to do that?? Mularkey sure doesn’t think so.

by Hutch11 on Jan 8, 2012 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely - and teams like GB do that well

But, in general, a solid OLine makes the entire offense better.

by Hutch11 on Jan 8, 2012 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

O-line

NO o-line gets away with holding as much as Falcons o-line gets away with not being penalized for still blocking and hitting after the whistle… So let the penalties offset and replay the down if thats gonna be the complaint. Being I am a Giants fan, I am surprised that the Falcons didn’t score offensively. More surprised the Falcons didn’t take deep shots down field, testing our safeties… I’ve been to many Falcons games being that I live in Atlanta, and the one thing that I could understand is how much the Falcons are night and day when it comes to playing at home vs playing away… Any thoughts on that?

by nyfinest314 on Jan 8, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

on offense I think it's Mularkey

the offense as a whole is horrendous (like today) when the OC is calling the plays. I think on the road and in big games, the OC stops letting Ryan do no-huddle, which shuts down the offense. If you look today, the only drive where Ryan had any success was when they used the no-huddle. Then the instant they shifted out of it, and Mularkey started calling the plays, the offense stalled.

I don’t think the OL really “blocks and hits after the whistle” any more than any OL, despite the reputation. Even in Atlanta’s most penalized games this year, there were very, very few penalties for late hits or anything like that. And believe me, there were plenty of games where Atlanta seemed to be penalized every play.

by falconnuke on Jan 8, 2012 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

No Huddle

I am not sure you can blame MM on not going “no Huddle” after awhile… At Halftime, the analyst mentioned that in her brief interview with Mike Smith, “he” mentioned the Offense was having communication issues due to the crowd noise which effected the no huddle…

by nyfinest314 on Jan 8, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

then use hand signals or something

This has been a problem all year, even in places where the crowd noises wouldn’t be considered deafening

by falconnuke on Jan 8, 2012 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

That again is on the OC

Like what you can’t run a no huddle with crowd noise….I call BS. If they can’t then that’s on the OC for not having hand signals for that as mentioned by Nuke.

If you watched the Saints - Lions game

You should have noticed how often the Saints lined up in a double wing formation and chipped the the Lions DEs. As the game progressed the DEs started taking an inside rush which allowed the OTs to go man up while the wings simply released into their patterns.

nfl rules need to change

No way the falcons should have had to go to New York, and no way should the Steelers have had to go to Denver. I agreed that the winner of the division should still be in the playoffs, but lets just seed the playoffs by record. The Falcons EARNED a HOME playoff game. MM's play calling makes sense...

if he was on another team. His style is suited for a power back running game paired with a shut down defense ie. the Ravens/Steelers of the past decade which is no spurprise since he came from the Steelers as a coach. The problem with him (and this was his issue when he was HC) is he doesn’t change the calls to match the players/team he currently has.

Also, I think Julio Jones is a HELL of a talent. Not looking forward to seeing that next year.

IMO thats not a good think.

The Falcons coaching ineptitude should be on the front burner for everyone to see.

Mike Smith.

I have always liked coach Smith but he gets no love after the awful product he put on display today. Falcons were unprepared, out coached and out played and in my mind the HC deserves full responsibility for that. There is no excuse for a team that possesses all the weapons the Falcons have to get shutout. The Broncos don’t have half the talent we have yet they showed up with a good game plan, properly prepared and ready to play playoff football. But once again coach Smith’s team put up a humiliating performance in front of a national audience.

Its’ time we stop looking a MM and BVG and start placing the blame where it belongs.

by BlackBirdBlitz on Jan 8, 2012 10:01 PM EST reply actions

FIRED!!!

MM you need to go. All i saw in this game was a safe play. The QB sneaks, they knew it was coming. A pitch to Rodgers or maybe a quick slant to JJ or RW. I dont think its the players fault ( to a certain degree). Our Defense was on point for the 1st half but our O line didnt come to play. MR needs to shack of the lose and the BULLSHIT. MR has all the tools needs to have and lead a great team. We dont have the OC and DC that we should. MM kick rocks. You need to go coach high school football cause know those plays your were calling would work. If we are to be taken serious then we need to get someone that means business. MM isnt it. I think MR makes a better OC when he goes with the No Huddle. He is still young so i am expecting some growing pains. As for Abe leave HELL NO. ATL will keep him. Him and RE need more time to mesh. Like i said before its not the players so much its the way the plays are being called. Start there and see what happens. Might suck at 1st but i think thats where the changes need to be made. MS has been great i love the guy. TD is great! I love watching the Falcons but the plays have to change.

by brotherbrown on Jan 8, 2012 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree with you!!!

For the last 3 playoffs we have been apart of – we keep going one and done. At first, like everybody else we thought it was that we didnt have the right players or the right talent. Now we have all that and we still loose?! It’s time to look at the OC and DC. I dont think MM was in the game today because he’s reaming of that head coaching job in Jacksonville. I listened to that whole game and heard an announcer say that the DC doesn’t disguise anything and that the Falcons are always leaving themselves open to big plays. And he also said that the Falcons takes shots down the field and use the Giants pass rush against them. Now if an announcer can predict how the Defense of the Atlanta Falcons will play and how the Offense is going to play – what makes MM and BVG think other people wouldn’t?!

by Antonio Grimes on Jan 8, 2012 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

2 Thumbs up

I agree. Watching Falcons turn around after the henious season they had under Bobby Petrino. GOD!! The Dan Reeves Era. AWESOME. I remember as a kid watching ATL beat the Vikings who where at the time the number 1 seed. (15-1). After Mike Smith got there, things began to change for the better. 4 Back-to-back winning season. I call that a good start. Next is the playoff’s. Starting with the Coachs and working our way down. We do have the talent and we do have the players. We need to start at the basics and see what happenes. Change out the DC and OC. Lets try a different angle cause as we have seen, that old school shit aint working. I dont blame the players. the Defense came to play. I have no idea where the offense went to. I dont know if Matt just got jumpy or cold feet, but that shit has got to stop. I know Matt trusts he WR. The one thing i will hit on is control of the ball. STOP DROPPING PASSES. You job is to catch those passes. That how ever is a player fault. Granted RW did make some nice catches but he need to make that happened all the time. JJ same thing for him. HD needs to see more playing time. I saw how the Saints run there offense. Why cant we get something like that in. Someone that is creative and fresh. You have weapons USE THEM. Put them to good use. Find someone that can put the pieces of the puzzle together.

The most unimaginative offensive game plan and ill conceived play calling. . .

. . . since the Dan Henning era. So much for mortgaging the future on some misguided quest to be the "Greatest Show on Turf". . . Please! . . . Only Philly’s "Dream Team" and the Buccaneers have been greater disappointments.

The O-line’s being called dirt bags is too kind to dirt bags. Douche bags is more like it. They have been exposed all year and are a marginal group at best. On the other side of the ball, the only constant has been the defense’s inability to get off the field.

This team’s performance , or lack thereof, is a direct result of many of Dimitroff’s dubious personnel decisions exacerbated by a horse ‘n buggy offensive coordinator the game has left behind, a mediocre college defensive coordinator promoted to his level of incompetence, and a quarterbacks coach whose claim to fame was Carson Palmer’s perennial under achiever status.

Mularkey, VanGorder, and Bratkowski must go. If Dimitroff doesn’t have the balls to fire their asses, he may be the next to go.

This is what needs to happen

Blank, Dimitroff, and Mike Smith needs to go in a room and decide who are the best candidates for OC, DC, and Special Teams. We need people that will use the talent we have to it’s fullest!

So proud for Tebow

Happy for his success and the youth needs a true icon to look up to. Lebron and Lady Gaga ain’t cutting it.

Look at the heart and determination of that Denver team. I remember last week after the loss to KC when Champ Bailey stood at his locker and spoke on his frustrations. Not one guy on this squad has the gull to do that.

NO HAPPY WITH THE COACHING STAFF

I don’t believe in Smitty anymore. I feel like he has lot the team because of coaching mistakes. Mularkey has crippled the offense with his boring playbook and terrible play calling. His offense isn’t designed around our talent and its too predictable. Brian Van Gorder has done a decent job considering the lack of elite talent on defense but his scheme is cookie-cutter and gives up too many big plays.

I want Smith gone and a new regime. If Smith stays, I want new coordinators…specifically a more creative offense coordinator and a more aggressive complicated scheme on defense.

The playoff game was a microcosm of the entire season. We under perform against elite teams. The offense never shows up for big games. Mularkey’s scheme is a joke. The fact that he may get a head coaching job is ridiculous, but I digress. The defense, although average at best, always gets blamed for the offenses short comings. The complete lack of fire in the big games leads me to believe that Smith has lost his voice with the team. We need a new voice, new fire.

by cajuncreation on Jan 8, 2012 11:34 PM EST reply actions

Smith might not be the coach we need

I don’t think that Smitty will win a SB here unless he gets a offensive guru(with COMPLETE control of the offense)to run it. Smith was a stabilizer. We were a crashing car and him and TD where our emergency brake. They fixed us up and got us on the road. Even built a nice car but we aren’t as good or have the quality of other cars on the road. Plus we are to stubborn to make the changes we need.

We need someone cut throat to take over this team. No more Mr. Nice Guy in here running this team. Smith all be it has earned some credit and is a good coach isn’t dynamic enough to take this team over the top. We need a chess player who is willing to challenge our coaches and coordinators to actually put in the work to stop us. The vanilla offense and defense won’t cut it in this league and talent can only take you so far.

by pierre02 on Jan 8, 2012 11:42 PM EST reply actions

Yea I agree with that

I really give Smitty all the credit in the world for taking the job and accomplishing what he did when he did. I would hate to see him go and think hes deserving of a chance but hes gotta make changes in the coaching staff to make up for his weaknesses as a coach. It seems like he carries alot of the load…he needs a talented OC and BVG has improved but I still feel like hes holding his hand through game planning and game calls. He needs to be able to focus on management and details…like time management before halftime or when and when not to play injured players (grimes). I dont feel that either one of our coordinators challenge Smitty enough for him to confide in them and just let the machine run. Look at what Wade phillips was able to do for Houstons def and the team in general…they finally got over the hump won their division and won their 1st playoff game yesterday. We need that type of impact to get over the hump and to keep Smitty around…he needs to focus on other details not questioning play calls play by play. Who can we hire? I dont know thats TDs job but…theyre are a few guys out there. I know Todd Hailey did alot with Boldin and Fitzgerald in AZ…hell they beat us in the playoffs on their way to the super bowl. Unless we make a splash in our coaching structure I think we will continue to be disappointed in the post season

by Bigru3 on Jan 9, 2012 12:07 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

You know, for all the crap we give about Sean Payton

I would KILL to have him as our coach. That mentality is what this team needs. Pains me to say it, but the Saints have the right idea on how to win. They play to not just win but demoralize their opponents. We play not to lose and that hasn’t worked out so well

This is what should happen

Blank, Dimitroff, and Mike Smith needs to go in a room and decide who are the best candidates for OC, DC, and Special Teams. We need people that will use the talent we have to it’s fullest! Then I would show every playoff game the Falcons was in for the start of OTs. Training Camp, Preseason, Regular Season, Post Season. This would remind EVERYONE on the team that this should NEVER happen and wont to a talented team like us!! Maybe Eric Mangini and a Great OC. For Special Teams I would get Rahim Morris and get another punt returner besides Eric Weems.

Is it ok to not be mad because you expected this?

Honestly this is the same way the team has played the entire season and the running game has always been fluky. Then when forced to pass against a solid pass rush, its been nothing doing.

Mike Smith

proved once again he can not prepare his team for a big game. He also proved he does not know how to coach in a big game. The 4th down decisions were garbage and the clock management at the end of the 1st half was nothing more then childish.

IMO Smitty has taken the spot light off of MM and BVG and pointed it at himself.

clock

I was wondering why they didn’t use their timeouts… I thought the Falcs would actually have success in the no huddle… I am a Giants fan, I live in Atlanta, and I really must say I was very surprised how bad of a game that was yesterday from a Falcons perspective, especially with the offensive weapons… I DVR’d the game so I am going to watch it again. I’ve never seen a game where Tony Gonzalez was this quiet, so I have to see how the Giants played him.

Y'ALL FINALLY GOT IT!!

Was coming in to snipe a little but, after reading your comments I realized “Ya’ll finally got it!!” You have been bitchin’ and moaning and groaning the refs were bad callen’ you all year long, the other team was playing dirty or aliens came down and kidnapped your QB and replaced him with a bad playing doppelganger(look it up). When in reality, it has been your own coaches that have been screwing up! Clean house and start over, it will get better. I was Actually hoping you would BEAT New York AND Green Bay just so you would have to come BACK to New Orleans for the conference playoff. That would have been a blood bath(all yours thou!) I thought after fourth and foolish against the Saints your coaches would have thought twice about doing it again but, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Not once but TWICE they tried it against the Giants and the results, FAILS. Until you get yor coaching problems fixed, the Falcons will not break into the elite level of the NFL to stay. See you next year. Good luck !!

Dude we've KNOWN the play calling was bad all year

If you were a Falcons fan and had actually;….oh…I don’t know READ the posts all year you would know that dude. Specifically the OC. As it is you are just the typical Saints fan (or any football fan from Louisiana imo) that is classless enough to talk crap on other peoples boards. You guys are THE hands down most classless fans in all of professional sports that I’ve seen so far bar none. No matter how many championships you may win in the future…that and a pile of money from here to the moon couldn’t buy you class. Have a great day! :)

Play calling has been the last 3 yrs of winning seasons…lol Every coordinator makes obvious dumb calls… Some teams like the Packers u don’t see it because the players execute.

My thinking is this…Robinson needs to go, Roddy needs to go(to many drops and the thug attitude) mayde even trade Turner also..if the hole isnt big enough to drive a truck thru he runs up and stops..O line needs major improvement(thinking Harvey Dahl was holding it together)..and yes now I hope MM takes a coaching jod somewhere..Smith is a damn good coach but his staff is average..just my thoughts..maybe next year..been hoping that since 1966…
