Lions-Saints Playoff Open Thread
This is the game that probably matters to you guys this Saturday.
If the Lions upset the Saints, it shakes up the NFC playoffs the rest of the way. If they're going to pull off an upset that would delight Falcons fans everywhere, they'll have to get by arguably the hottest team in the NFL in the second year of the year. It won't be easy, and the Lions already dropped one game to the Saints in 2011.
If the Saints do win, they've got a good shot to advance to the NFC Championship Game. Those interested in revenge on the grandest scale possible should root for this, though I should note that the Falcons have to win two games before that can happen.
Enough blathering. It's football time.

Drew Brees doesn't play for either team
So who cares?
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
will someone explain the "hitting a defensless WR" rule to me!
I’ve been fighting with that rule all year long. I understand da helmet to helmet but alot of those calls isnt helmet to helmet.
by jgreedy on Jan 7, 2012 7:59 PM EST via mobile reply actions
the uniform color is key
if the defender has the wrong color and the receiver has the “right” color, then it’s hitting a defenseless receiver.
If the Ref/NFL likes a certain player/team they throw a flag to help them out.
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
I agree with u guys. That rule is so crazy.

Hell yeah Detroit!!!
This is exactly why i’m so tired of the national media having such a circle jerk about New Orleans. Their defense is NOT THAT GOOD. Brees is awesome, but as soon as they face a potent offense in the playoffs, they are totally beatable.
New Orleans probably wins this game, but they don’t have a prayer against a team like Green Bay
That was a MM type openig drive

The game we played them was outrageous
like every third play was a hold

and half of the incomplete passes by Ryan had obvious pass interference

I just want to see Suh knock Brees around a little bit tonight
A broken ankle would be ideal, but i’ll take some bruises.
Of course if you look at Brees the wrong way you get a penalty for it, but Suh has never let a little thing like that stop him.

I actually don't dislike Brees
What I dislike is that he covers up so much sh*ttiness. That team is NOT that good, but he’s so awesome that it covers up for everything else. He’s allowed them to be both lazy and successful, and that’s what is annoying. I hate Green Bay, but i feel like they’ve earned it a little more by actually building a team.

"The Dos Equis guys want me to be the least interesting man in the world" - Drama
nah, that's paragraph 1 of subsection 1
subsection 43, paragraph 4, line 2 reads: If a defensive player is within 3 yards of a possible TD catch, assume the TD was caught and throw a flag. If no TD, call either DPI or personal foul
Oh my mistake
The rules for the Saints are so complex I lose track of them. Refs have to have something in the rule book for every possible situation!

In defence of the refs (gasp I know)
in the situation that every score is reviewed, it is safer to rule a TD and have it overturned than to not rule it. Lions got screwed out of a score last week like that.

So, question.
offensive lineman pushing a DL onto the ground then lying on him. that’s, by definition, holding, correct?
Actually
that’s called a pancake. It’s legit, as far as I know.
It’s holding if the DL is getting around him, but it’s a pancake if he’s pushed straight backwards.

Pancake block definition:
The pancake block is a term that is used by offensive line coach and offensive linemen in football to describe a block that leaves a defensive player flat on his back as the running back goes through the hole. It represents a dominating victory by the offensive lineman over the defensive lineman or linebacker in order to open a sizable hole for the running back to exploit.

at this point it’s not about the refs. Yeah the refs have helped no end, but detroit have left too many turnovers out there. dropped picks, missed tackles…the defence hasn’tlooked good enough to win it.

The Saints are an offensive machine
Their defense sucks though. I think they can beat anyone in the NFC except Green Bay, who will torch their defense. If you can score on them consistently, you beat them… Detroit just couldn’t capitalize tonight.
So, if you want the Falcons to go to the Superbowl, i don’t see it happening this year. But if you just hate the Saints and don’t want to see them make the Superbowl, i see no chance of them getting past Green Bay, especially since they’ll have to play in Lambeau, and Brees becomes way more susceptible to sucking outdoors.
by cheshire falcon on Jan 7, 2012 11:25 PM EST reply actions
Green Bay got defensive problems too
It’s a tossup between the two.
by brotherbrown on Jan 7, 2012 11:27 PM EST up reply actions
I'd have to respectfully disagree
2 reasons:
1.) The key to beating New Orleans is to consistently attack their pass defense and finish drives (which is what Detroit did for the first half), which is pretty much what Aaron Rodgers does better than anyone in the league
2.) Playing at Lambeau makes all the difference. Rodgers is much more comfortable in the elements than Brees, who seems to have more trouble outdoors.
If the game were at New Orleans, i’d probably agree with you… but you put the Saints outside and weird things start to happen.
by cheshire falcon on Jan 7, 2012 11:45 PM EST up reply actions
3rd reason
3.) GB is loved as much or more, so the Saints won’t get every call.
People forget how mediocre they are on the road
They were 5-3, which obviously isn’t terrible, but all of their losses this season came on the road and when you take them out of the Superdome they become very beatable and Drew Brees stops being Superman.
Of those 5 road wins, 2 of them were handed to them by the Titans and Falcons, and the other 3 were against terrible teams (Minnesota, Jacksonville and Carolina). And whenever they have to play outside, they score decidedly fewer points.
So while the national media has been falling all over themselves to fall at the altar of Brees, it’s somehow gone unnoticed that as soon as you take New Orleans out of New Orleans, they aren’t nearly as scary.
by cheshire falcon on Jan 8, 2012 12:45 AM EST up reply actions
The Saints can run the ball
Over 9000 times better than the Packers
That’s cold weather football.
9ers
The Niners will stop the Aints next weekend by their linebackers actually getting at Drew Brees. I suspect that Brees could get injured? If not and the Aints win Brees will be banged up and having to face the packers outside at Lambeau in the cold. I don’t think his sore bayou body will like that much.

While I'd love to see Brees get laid out when they're running up the score in a done game
you can’t have an issue with running up a score in a playoff game. Things change in a playoff game. Running up a score can cripple someones season in the reg. But in playoffs, a 1 point loss and a 50 point loss are the exact same. I’m not going to congratulate the Saints for running up a score, but I don’t have any problem with it whatsoever in playoffs. It’s their right, because of how cutthroat the playoffs are. Still hate it with all my being in the regular season, but class and the playoffs don’t go hand in hand. Well done on the win Saints, hope San Fran smother you like an unplanned baby.

GB may be the only team that can score with them. Unless we go on an epic run, we dont stand a chance.
Now Gentlemen, get your butts up, and get back on that horse! You have no choice. The expectations are running much higher this year.
A day later da Saints offense looks scary...
We need more corner backs that can cover. Let’s just focus on the Giants… 3 words JULIO JULIO JULIO falcons win!!!
With all the help Saints get from the Refs at the moment I don't think anyone can beat them...
Several moments in last nights game where I yelled at the tv for holding, and the would be fumble return for TD which was ruled incomplete.
Some might argue that staffords knee was down before the ball hits the pillar but it was not clear with out doubt on replay that it was
Its the playoffs and the refs let them play
The Lions were just as guilty of holding as the Saints

How is that idiotic
Or are you just saying the Saints were the only ones holding
The Saints fans just arent crying about it
by mississippisaintsfan on Jan 8, 2012 11:17 AM EST up reply actions
I'm saying a few things...
1.) The Saints get away with things that no other team gets away with
2.) Only Saints fans don’t acknowledge this because they are too busy trying to figure out how to get Brees to sleep with them
3.) You’re an idiot
Does that clarify? Also, it’s spelled “consistent”. See #3 above.

I'm among the first to cal the Lions dirty
they played about as clean a game as you can.
And they got called for everything. new orleans consistently (wonderful word when spelled correctly) committed penalties that were not called.
and it’s not just Falcons fans noticing this. It’s Giants fans, Steelers fans, Colts fans, Bills fans, even Pats fans.
You're trying to reason with a grown man who can't spell
It’s admirable, but it’s like nailing jello to a wall.

So our 13-3 record is basely soled on luck and assistance from the refs all season? That is about the most idiotic thing I’ve heard in my life. Or is that the new invented name you guys came up with. “Katrina Rule”. Yeah, very classy to bring up the name of a storm that happened six years ago and killed thousands of people.
Amazing how certain teams like the Patriots or Manning and the Colts “Run up the Score”. It’s labeled acceptable But when the Saints do it? They’re cheaters classless blah blah.
Absolutely freaking amazes me.
I spent 8 years trying to reach him...and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply...Evil.

it absolutely freaking amazes me
how anyone could watch a Saints game like last night and not see obvious bias in officiating.
All season long
You guys have blamed officiating due to Saints victories, which is total bullcrap. And whining when we put up 40 burgers on other teams.
When the 6th seed Packers put 48 on your team in the playoffs last season, I bet not one of you guys accused them running up the score. Because it was acceptable to you guys
But the Saints? Oh My God! Such a sin! So classless! Katrina Rule blah blah. Please.
how anyone could watch a Saints game like last night and not see obvious bias in officiating.
You sound like a Viking fan. Now that’s pathetic.

"ABSOLUTELY FREAKING AMAZES ME!!!"
You remind me of that rich parent who thinks their kids are perfect and how anyone who points out the terrible sh*t they do must be just mean and biased and have it out for their kids.
Anyone who understands football and watches the Saints on a regular basis sees one lopsided officiating display after another. I don’t expect you to admit that – you can say i’m just being biased, but that applies to you as well, so we’re just at a stalemate there. I don’t know whether it actually impacted their final record or not, but it makes it a hell of a lot harder to beat them.
This first got noticed in the NFC Championship game a couple of years ago when the Saints got away with one late hit after another on Favre, and not so much as a flag was thrown. I would expect even someone who has spent as much time in that 3rd world excuse of a city you guys call “New Orleans” to admit that late hits are a legit penalty. It’s not like people from other fanbases haven’t noticed it, and it’s not like Falcons fans are throwing that claim at every team in the league. They throw it at the Saints because it’s obvious and it’s true.
But I don’t want to interrupt the wet dreams you have about Drew Brees every night, so if you need to just say we’re all pathetic and mean and whatever, go for it.

I didn’t know you were such an expert. Congratulations. The NFCCG as you mentioned if you remember, there were a couple of flags thrown that game. Brett Favre’s O’line did a terrible job protecting him. It’s the defenses job, of all 32 teams to get to the QB.
Oh yeah, and the media wanted a Manning and Favre Superbowl. That didn’t happen did it? We crushed the media’s hard on for the Golden Boys of the NFL. Good for the Saints. I’m glad they’re not the pushovers they once were.
And if you compare Sean Payton and Bill Belichick. Yes, they have a knack for running up the score. And they have a rep for being pricks. But they win games and score a ton of points. My kind of coach.
Give me a prick of a head coach who lights up the score board rather than a Mediocre Nice guy who blows epic meltdown 4th quarter leads. Aka Jim Mora

Oh and another correction chesirefalcon. In the NFCCG heading into OT. Saints had 9 penalties, Vikings had only 2

Dr. Sam Loomis Aka (Donald Pleasence)
Ha, you realize that doesn't prove anything, right?
No one said “The refs were calling more penalties on the Vikes than the Saints”… otherwise that might have been an intelligent response. The Saints committed a hell of a lot more penalties than 9 in that game.
by cheshire falcon on Jan 8, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions
It doesn't exactly require an expert
When guys are taking cheap shots at a QB, it doesn’t matter how good or bad their offensive line is playing. It’s not like the refs say “Oh, sorry, that was a late hit, but your O-Line should have protected better, so we’re not calling it”. But of course, you didn’t really respond to anything I said (other than inexplicably going back to this “running up the score” thing, which i didn’t even respond to).
Here’s a serious question though – why are you here? I’m sure there are plenty of websites where people are ripping the Falcons, but i don’t care enough to go whine on their sites. So why are you on ours? I mean if THAT isn’t pathetic, i’m not sure how you can use the word with a straight face.
by cheshire falcon on Jan 8, 2012 1:20 PM EST up reply actions
When guys are taking cheap shots at a QB
No such thing ever happened. This is a full contact sport. Even Brett Favre himself admitted the Saints didn’t throw any cheapshots. What would Jack Lambert say? “Might as well put skirts on them”

Weird, a guy from Mississippi who can’t spell. Is that like the 3rd time i’ve had to correct your spelling?
You guys really don’t see the irony in two people trolling on someone else’s board and then criticizing someone else for how they handle themselves, do you? I’m criticizing you because you don’t belong here, not because I hate the Saints. If we were on a Saints message board, you might have a point… but we’re on a Falcons message board.
So again, I ask, what are you doing here?

How in the hell do you not knock the shit out of Brees when he’s got a lead that big and is lining up in the shotgun and throwing on you for no reason other than getting a record he could just wait to set next week?
Seriously, take an extra step or three if you have to, you can’t just roll over and let another team do that to you.
