24-20 Giants

Until we win a playoff game, I’m not expecting or predicting us to win a playoff game, especially on the road.

MVP: JPP

The key to avoiding the score (since I don’t want it to happen): keep Ryan upright as much as possible, don’t abandon the running game, yet be creative with it; and limit big passing plays by the Giants, as Eli will eventually mess up if given an opportunity.

What do I think will go wrong?

Our o-line won’t be able to keep the G-Men from getting pressure on Ryan or keep Turner rolling. We’ll get some points, but it will be too little, too late.

I hope I’m wrong.

I’m trying to be pessimistic about this game so I won’t be as disappointed as I was last season if we lose. I’m also really worried about our defensive scheming against a good Giants offense.

Honestly I feel good about this, I saw the giants play a lot of bad games, if we can slow down Eli and protect Ryan it will be a cake walk. They can’t run on us, and yes they have Cruz, but we got Julio and I expect a big play from him and probly a pick by Willy mo or Franks. After that grind them down with Turner!

30-24 Falcons

Running game, quick passes to Tony G and Rowdy Roddy White neutralize the majority of NYG’s pass rush. Eli still gets his yards, but Matt Ryan outplays him. Victor Cruz does not have more than 100 yards receiving. The Falcons are well aware of what he can do, so they’ll key in on him like they did Megatron, except Cruz isn’t nearly as good. John Abraham will have a key play that solidifies the lead for the Falcons. Falcons fly over to Green Bay for the 2nd round.

37-28 falcons

Offensive MVP Julio Jones (132 yards receiving, 30 yards rushing, 2TD’s)
Defensive MVP Corey Peters (1 sack, 1 forced fumble returned for a TD by Ray Edwards)

Key to the Game: Penalties, despite being at home Giants rack up 5 false start penalties, 2 unecessary roughness, and 2 pass interference for a grand total of 120 yards, where as the falcons have 3 false start penalties, 1 unecessary roughness, and 1 pass interference for 55yards.

Gameflow: Falcons race out to an early lead behind an early receiving TD by Julio, Peter’s forced fumble and a rushing 1 rushing TD by Turner. 21-7 lead into the half. Eli and company come back behind a Ahmad Bradshaw TD run and a Mario Manningham TD. 23-21 tied at end of third. Start of the 4th begins with Julio Jones deep ball TD. Eli follows with long drive ending with a TD pass to Hynoski. with 5 mins left in the game, falcons execute a game winning drive culminating with short Turner TD run. Minute and half left in the game Eli drive to the falcons 30 and in an effort to throw a crossing route to Nicks gets intercepted by Thomas Decoud.

by FrozenFinger on Jan 6, 2012 2:02 PM EST reply actions

I also think Harry has a big game

I think we are going to exploit the middle of the field passing with Tony and HD and bash Turner side to side. I think the Giants are going to be REALLLLY aggressive trying to get to Ryan and we burn them badly for it.

by dr3dd1ne on Jan 6, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

I also think that Justin Tuck will be crying to the Refs all game!

Since he started his little Cheese & Whine party – the Refs are going to be looking hard at the Falcons Offensive line and looking to call almost any penalty they can on Atlanta. My Message for The Falcons Offensive line – be more aggressive and make the Giants cause penalties. Take good dives if you have to, run the ball early and often against the Giants then go for their throats with Julio, Tony, Harry, Roddy and Jacquizz, Set up some screens and some Options because the Giants falls for that all the time – you’re just using their pass rush against them. Defensive needs to be aggressive and get to Eli, stop the run, and shut down Victor Cruz and their returning Tight End.

over unders on fights with linemen on Sunday?

LOL Just thought I’d throw that out there. I see us frustrating the pass rush with the running game. (Fingers Crossed).

by dr3dd1ne on Jan 6, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

My predictions.

Turner has a good, but not great game (think 20 carries for 80 yards).

Roddy White has a very mild game, but does make a key reception or two.

Julio goes for 100 and 2 TDs, but Tony Gonz is the true MVP with big 3rd down receptions all game long.

Ryan has a strong game, but the pass rush does get to him a few times, forcing at least 1 key turnover.

On the other side, KG abandons the run quickly after a couple predictable offset-I inside tackle runs that get met in the backfield and the run game is largely nonexistent. Eli humps the team on his back and despite good coverage, still finds a lot of success over the top. Cruz is held to 70-80 yards, but with a long TD while Nicks puts up a huge day. However, the weekly ST miscue gives back the momentum created by the DLine.

In the end, it comes down to the last possession or two, with one or two big plays likely to decide the final outcome. Obviously I hope to see the ball in Eli’s hands at the end with the game on the line.

Been fun this week, guys, good luck, let’s have a good game.

Falcons win 31-27

Matty Ice gets the defensive package on the field he wants, switches to no huddle and kills the giants. MR2 prefers the 4 DE’s on the field at the same time, then he checks into run after run and lets MT33 destroy their 4 DE’s!! Then he lets them limp off the field and starts airing it out against a nonexistent pass rush and kills the giants again!! If our coaching staff does not employ this gameplan we will not win and they all need fired!!!

MR2 – 256 yards 2 TD’s 1 int

MT33 – 134 yrds 2 TD’s on 18 carries

RW84 – 8 rec 84 yrds 1 TD

JJ11 – 6 rec 108 yards 1 TD

Oh and the QB with the ball last wins this game. NY scores to make it 27-24 giants but leave 1:24 on the clock and Ryan hits JJ for a 23 yard TD with 3 secs left to win it!!

Now Gentlemen, get your butts up, and get back on that horse! You have no choice. The expectations are running much higher this year.

by ATLsince1972 on Jan 6, 2012 3:00 PM EST reply actions

Question from an observation, if I may.

I have been saying all week that I believe the Falcons will run on the Giants and that that is the key to success for your boys. Because this will keep Eli off the field, and put the Falcons in safe down and distances.

I see you led the league in running left, to the tune of over 500 yards. This is especially troubling to me because if you can run left effectively to the tune of like 5 yards per carry, which is very possible against a less than great Giants run D, running left CAN neutralize our best defensive player in JPP.

If Turner and Snelling are putting your offense in 2nd and 3, 3rd and 2, then you can use playaction to slow JPP’s rush as well as run some shorter routes because of the favorable down and distance to beat the rest of the Dlines rush. Plus, with 2nd and 3 type of situations those are great spots to try and hit a big play down the field with your outstanding WR’s.

Your teams ability to run left concerns me. Any Falcon fans have any thoughts about this?

A lot of Turner's big runs

have come off the left side, so that’s skewing the numbers just a bit I presume. I’d be pleasantly surprised if they had consistent success running any direction in the game, but truthfully, the run game has had more of a home run effect than a consistent one.

by KMarch on Jan 6, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Like that's a bad thing. :-)

But I understand what you are saying that those homeruns skew the numbers.

I look at all your success coming on the left side and worry about my best defensive player not being able to wreck a game like he has been doing.

Turners consistency was a problem in 2011

Long runs skew Turners stats and make the numbers look better. Turner struggled on first downs most of the regular season, which put more pressure on Matt Ryan on 2nd and 3rd downs. I hope they pull Turner off on first downs if he can’t get it done. May be use Snelling or Quizz on early downs and use Turner on the second downs.

I'll say this though

Turner has been running with more authority lately. That may be a factor of the line gelling more the last 1/2 of the season. He just seems to have his legs back under him. If he does yes that is a bad thing for NY. Part of the reason he struggled on 1st downs is the type of runs Mularkey continues to try to use him for. It’s weird…he’s a big back, but if you notice most of his runs go for good chunks outside rather than inside. Mularkey likes to “keep the defense honest” by running up the gut rather than just dialing up running plays that actually work for our personnel. Turner is a beast running to the tackles or to the outside of them.

by dr3dd1ne on Jan 6, 2012 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

It does seem

that Turner has more success running left than he does running into the middle of the pile on 1st and 10. Even when he runs into the pile, there sometimes seems to be some room on the left, but he’s not shifty enough to exploit it.

by randomaxe on Jan 6, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

I have noticed that.

And always marveled at the fact that that huge bowling ball of a RB can run outside so effectively.

How are your guards at pulling? Is that a reason for MT’s success running it outside?

I see he has been productive in 3 WR sets. Is that with 21 personnel?

WR blocking

is very effective. Go take a look at Julio’s crackback block in Turner’s 81 yd run last week. Guards can be a little slow at time, but they generally do all right.

Yeah the line is more athletic than smashmouth imo

They like blocking on the move instead of smash / power. Part of that success lately is we’ve settled in more at 3 wide, 1TE, 1 back sets and are having good luck with that. It has even opened up the run more because as Turner runs outside there are more DBs on the field trying to tackle him than LBs, etc. esp to the side the WRs are on which is not coincidentally left more than not.

by dr3dd1ne on Jan 6, 2012 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah my question was confusing.

We would not see 21 personnel with 3 WR’s on the field. Sometimes my thoughts out pace my typing and my clarity of thought suffers. Not to mention my readers comprehension suffers!

by tommy d. on Jan 6, 2012 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

no we used to though a LOT

I mean when Mughelli was healthy that was our M.O. 2 backs, 1TE, and 2 wides. We’ve had this identity crisis / growing pains of trying to transform from a heavy run team to a more passing oriented one. So it wasn’t until recently that we’ve actually found peace with the 3 wides and committed to it. Our starting FB going down actually helped in that regard. We miss him a LOT though, but it helped us see we can actually run and pass successfully out of that set and I think it’s our new identity.

by dr3dd1ne on Jan 6, 2012 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

Agree completely

The 3WR, 1TE, 1RB set is our new starting lineup most games. In that set, Turner has had great success running and our passing game has completely opened up. The offense has done a good job of mixing runs and passes out of this formation, making it far less predictable.

We pull A LOT

And the idea that Turner can’t hit the edges isn’t true either. He’s actually a better rusher on the edges than he is up the middle. If you can’t hit him in the backfield and he hits a corner, he’ll pick up at least 5 yards. There aren’t many DBs that can tackle MT alone.

Running is important, but no longer defines Falcons offense

It’s a common perception that the Falcons are run-first, but that has changed in the last half of this season. It’s funny – when we lost our pro-bowl caliber fullback, our offense started leaning heavier to the pass and having success. In fact, Turner has great success running out of a single-back, 3WR set (averaging nearly 5 per carry).

In the last 9 games (6-3 record), Matty has thrown for 300 yards 4 times, has 20TDs and 4INTs. He only threw under 250 yards twice in that span – both blowout wins against the Jags and the Bucs in which he didn’t play the whole game. He also registered 7 games of a 90 passer rating or higher, with 6 of those being 110 or higher.

In that same stretch, Michael Turner only rushed for 100 yards twice. And even with a ridiculous 172 yards on 17 carries against the Bucs to skew the stats, he has only averaged about 4.4 yards per carry and amassed 719 yards.

So – I know all the talk is about how Turner will do against the Giants and how important everyone “thinks” he is. But the truth is that Ryan is quickly putting this team on his shoulders and has had a pretty amazing stretch of excellent QB play.

by The DW on Jan 6, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Thats good for you guys to know Ryan has somewhat carried the team in the last 9 games.

However, the level of competition is not impressive. The best teams you faced in that span, NO twice, and HOU all beat you. teams like MIN, IND, and TB are among the worst in football.

If the Falcons, or any team that would play the Giants RIGHT NOW while they have their Dline at it’s healthiest point this season cannot run it effectively on first down, you are going to have to contend with as dominant a pass rush as there has been in the NFL since the 2007 Giants Dline that also was healthy when it went into the post season.

In the last two games, the Giants have 11 sacks. 5 vs. the Jets and 6 vs. the Cowboys.

Those losses

The Houston loss was painful because we had shots to win it. That’s also one of the top 3 defenses in the league right now, so it is what it is.

As for Minnesota, they actually lead the league in sacks – but we held Jared Allen to no sacks. In fact, Allen never even touched Matt.

For for NO – well, that was painful, but certainly wasn’t Ryan’s fault. The Saints just destroyed our offense. Ryan quietly put up a very good passing performance that was overshadowed by the Drew Brees own all records victory show.

As for the Giants last two games – that definitely concerns me. But sacking Sanchez 5 times isn’t anything to write home about and Romo is playing behind one of the most inexperienced and poor offensive lines in the league. Even though the Falcons OLine started the season horribly, they’ve been solid the last 9 games.

But all of this is moot and comes down to Sunday. I’ll be honest – the stats are fun, but ultimately meaningless. There’s something about playoff games and rivalry games that throw out all other stats and indications.

by The DW on Jan 6, 2012 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Points well taken.

All of them. And I’m actually glad to hear you discount stats. Seems like a fair share of your fellow Falcon fans really enjoy them. :-)

I hate stats

Granted, I’ve used them in the past week or so, but stats don’t take into account what I call “the human factor” which is basically any kind of outside influence that could affect the person in the game. If games were played on paper, no one would care about it and pro football would be a basement board game hobby.

Absolutely

That play was setup by the lack of passing options. Everyone and their mother KNEW Ryan was throwing to Roddy.

This year has been very different. Ryan has developed a new trust with Julio down the stretch and is incorporating Harry Douglas (our speed slot guy) into third down conversions more and more.

by The DW on Jan 6, 2012 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

for your consideration

N.O. had to beat us in overtime the first game. Houston has one of the best defenses in the league and we had TWO touchdowns called back in that game due to stupid penalties and turnovers. If Mularkey let’s Ryan go to no huddle in that game we win it.

I wouldn’t crow over the wins over the Jets and Cowgirls sack totals against them included. They were terribad down the stretch.

I'll say this though

We’ve done well pass protecting against teams with A good passrusher and a supporting cast. What scares me about the NY line is that you have MULTIPLE good rushers. We’ve got to run the ball to win period. Not that we won’t try to burn your DBs or exploit the middle with HD and Tony, but we have to soften that up. If we can’t run Matt will be on bed rest lol

35-24 Falcons

I was going to go by average points per game, but they are less than a point different.

I like Tuner to be the MVP

Tony G comes up Big

Giants limit Turner, but Tony G comes up with 2 clutch TD’s. Pick six for our 3rd to seal the game.

Eli has a come back down to earth game and realizes that was only the Cowboys they beat last week.

ovacs takes his shirt off and taunts the entire section 240 at metlife stadium and is then banned from this stadium too (see: 2010 Falcons-Giants banning at the Meadowlands).

Falcons 31 Giants 27

MR2 300+ 2 TD’s
JJ11 8 catches 150 yards 1TD
MT33 23 carries 105 yards 1 TD

4th quarter Eli puts the Gmen up 27-24 with about 4 minutes remaining. Matty Ice calmy smoothly drives the falcons down to the 15 yard line where he hits julio on that underneath route we all love so much in which julio carries 2 DB’s on his back into the endzone. Eli gets the ball back with about 1:30 left and down the our 40 yard line, goes deep to Nicks and Willy Mo picks the ball off and seals the victory.

MVP is TG88, 9 catches for a buck forty and 2td’s

I Think resting john abraham will pay huge hes gonna have a monster game forcing turnovers, allowing us to run the ball and eventually hit the deep shots letter to seal the game giants a big play near the end but wont be enough, Turner running well first 3 quaraters then they unlesh matt with the play action pass giants dbs cant stay with roddy, julio,hd,tg and get big plays BOX STATS Matt Ryan 312yrds 2TD Turner 140yrds 2Tds White 10 rec 112 2TD, Julio 7 75, HD 4 39, TG 8 75, Defense big games from abraham 2sacks FF and a pick from Dfranks or William Moore

Jamie Dukes

Said it perfectly untill we can get a jake long at left tackle and protect matt ryan we wont be able to carve teams up with passing game so gotta run the ball untill then to set it up

by Nedk23 on Jan 6, 2012 5:22 PM EST reply actions

Its gonna be

14-10 at half for us cause well controll the clock second half gmen get a fg we get a td use up the clock, going into the 4th it will be 21-13, well get a fg making it 24-13 giants come down and score then we hit a big play on pa pass to roddy making it 31-20 final clock runs out

I think it will be a close game.

If the Oline can keep Matt upright, then the Falcons win. If not, then I’m having a really bad month.

We have better players

but it is not enough to win a play off game. We need better coaches.
Falcons are not able to win that game but Giants can shoot themselves and loose:)
Otherwise G 24:20

Coaches

Your right, I really wish Mr Blank had contacted Coach Morris, formerly of the Bucs about taking over as Defensive coordinator

by doglovr on Jan 6, 2012 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

No to Defensive Backs Coach Morris.

Morris was a Defensive Back Coach with out DC experience. No way Falcons hire a guy who was not even a DC before he became HC.

It's all about Process...

Wow, wide range of opinion

Don’t know about the score, but as long as Atlanta wins with no major injuries to either team (I don’t hate the giants, just don’t root for them), i’ll be happy.

Especially if Grimetime gets an interception

by falconnuke on Jan 6, 2012 7:45 PM EST reply actions

Would love it if Grimetime were the MVP.

Actually, we haven’t seen much of “Special” Weems this year. Any chance he finally has an impact game this year?

Weems

as a player, doesn’t seem to be the type to make a massive difference in the final outcome. Some CR can, but even the best really…. don’t.

The entire team, as whole, needs to, imo, “rise up”

by falconnuke on Jan 6, 2012 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

He definitely did in the 1st Packers, ravens and creamsicle Bucs games last year

without him there’s 0 way we win those games. I just want him to take one back, is that so hard Weems!??!!

I have no reasoning beyond gut feeling. Their pass rush, and our oline, decides it.

27-20 Atl

Leave Mike M and Van Gorder in Atl, Falcons win

by doglovr on Jan 6, 2012 10:09 PM EST reply actions

Falcons win 38-24

Matt Ryan wins MVP with 3 touchdown passes and 280+ yards.

The Falcons’ execute their “scripted” plays perfectly, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead on the first drive of the game. Michael Turner is used on an “as needed” basis. Most of his runs come out of three receiver and shotgun formations.

Roddy White catches 11 balls. Julio catches 8. Julio gets 1 TD and Gonzalez gets 2.

William Moore has an interception and a forced fumble.

This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.

Atlanta fans don't deserve a playoff win.

Has anyone else heard or read this article by this nitwit… http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/7429623/the-city-atlanta-worst-sports-town-america

Really Really, I say it’s damn hard to be an Atlanta sports fan because it takes pure dedication.

Check the fanshots. This article has a lot of people pissed off, for good reason. He’s a complete idiots, and almost everything he says in that article is flat out wrong.

The larger issue at hand is that people still use ESPN for their sports news and analysis. If the fact that this guy works and writes for them is not inspiration enough to search elsewhere for your sports information, then I don’t know what is.

This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.
