Your 2011 Atlanta Falcons MVP: Matt Ryan

Photo

The voters have spoken!

Though he had to fight off Sean Weatherspoon the whole way, Matt Ryan is the team's MVP, at least according to voting Falcoholics. After having one of his finest seasons to date despite a struggling offensive line, Ryan's getting at least some due for it.

Where this season became a little remarkable—and what gives me even more hope for the season ahead—is how good Ryan was from Week 9 on. In that nine game stretch, he threw 20 touchdowns against just three interceptions, leading the team to a 6-3 record over that span. Those aren't astoundingly big numbers, but they are astoundingly efficient. That's worth celebrating.

Congratulations to Ryan.

Do you agree with the choice? Weigh in and check back in on Thursday for the next round of voting.

I know his stats were nice.

Not my choice, as I’m waiting for Matty Ice to step up in big games.

He puts up good numbers against below 500 teams, but against team with wining records he’s yet to wow me.

Hopefully the new look offense can change some of these ratings.

same here

Ryan was solid #2 in my list after Spoon. He was good, especially in the 4th quarters of games but he wasn’t nearly at his best when facing touch teams. He has to go over that hurdle to go into #1 spot in my list, although some would argue with me.

Yep, the lackluster performance in big games was...

my issue as well!!

Was it “all” his fault absolutely not but still…

Sorry

The numbers bunched together.

Well deserved too

I think having a screen game in 2012 will bring forth even better numbers (and hopefully more wins). Just imagine if Matt had those extra few hundred yards and touchdowns that Cam and Brees got just from the screen game.

i agree

Matt earns more of his yards than any other QB, except for the occasional big play by JJ.

by 50 CALIBER on Jan 31, 2012 1:32 PM EST reply actions

So true, he definitely earned his yards

Cam got like 600 yds just from screens. Nearly all of Matt’s yds came from throwing down the field and to guys in the flat. He’d easily cross the 4500 yd 30 TD milestone with a screen game.

Brees, also

Saints were one of the top teams in YAC, mostly thanks to Sproles.

It's about more than numbers

And while Matt didn’t perform as well against the top teams this year – over his short 4 year career – he can be counted on to consistently play well. More importantly, though, is his leadership on and off the field. It is very apparent that his teammates greatly respect him and they believe that they can win any game with him at QB.

It takes most QBs several years to be fully established as a leader of the locker room. It also takes that time to give the other players the sense that they are always in a game, no matter the opponent or the score. Matt has been doing this since day 1.

Success is internally determined and externally executed.

Thats what really annoys me about the whole Flacco vs Ryan debate

Flacco has put up alot of absolute stinker games and his teammates have been vocal about not trusting him. Matt has never had that problem here. Even his bad games are not as bad as Flacco’s multiple 130 yd performances. Baltimore has won many games in spite of Flacco not because of Flacco.

by leonw92 on Jan 31, 2012 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Matty’s bad games are still not horrific by most peoples’ standards, but Flacco has put up some absolutely horrid numbers in the past.

Very interesting stat

In his four years in the league, Matt has only one game where he threw 3 or more interceptions.

When you look at some of the elite QBs in the league – like Brady, Manning and Brees – none of those guys has a track record like that. So, yes – even though we as fans cringe when he has an “off” game – Matt Ryan is almost never the MAIN reason for the loss. In my eyes, that is a remarkable achievement for such a young player.

Success is internally determined and externally executed.

Agree

But, I think RW is getting frustrated with something’s. His comment this year about let’s just give up on the deep ball. Then his comment on MR on the NFL interview last week.
But RW can’t really say much with all the drops this yr.

screen game

with the screen game and no MT and quiz doing his thing MR will have tom bredy like numbers nxt year. as much i love MT he is bringing this team down. with passing as primary and quiz complementing MR game like ray rice does to JF and a qb like JF wins as much games as well as the type of numbers he gets without ray rice to dump off to he would be a nobody flipping burgers as mcdonald somewhere…
that said MR will be an elite qb nxt along with the best of them and our def will be taken care by MN so not so worried about that…

why were people voting for spoon...

even though he had a break out year, from what I heard, MVP means most valuable player. As in if your team mvp didn’t play, you would get your butt handed to you. No matt ryan = we are 6-10 at best. No spoon = we are still around the 10-6 range. Don’t get me wrong, <3 spoon, but hes definitely not the MVP.

Here's a stat for you

Falcons played 6 games against teams with a winning percentage better then 500 and we’re 1-5. Looks like we had our butt handed to us anyway. I’m not bashing Matt Ryan in the least bit. I know he did have a stat friendly year in a pass happy league. Lot’s of question marks on offense such as our offensive line. If he had better protection I’m sure he would have done a better job in big games. When you have an average line, you get average protection.

When you have an average Qb

you get lots of balls thrown into the ground and bleachers. With Roddy and JJ an above average QB should throw for 5000 every year. I want someone else.

That is an incredibly simplistic view

I’m not saying you should like Matty – it’s your prerogative to – but just because a QB has good weapons doesn’t mean he has a scheme that is well designed to get them the ball. I think the only reason Ryan hasn’t blown out numbers is because he hasn’t been asked to, and he wasn’t in a system that was conducive to big passing numbers.

Success is internally determined and externally executed.

gotta be MR

It’s kinda sad but in this NFL there are few teams that can name an “individual” defensive player has MVP over an offensive player especially one with as much talent and the stats of MR. Spoon fantastic year and defensive mvp probably, but i love me some 5-0.

Ryan

I too am concerned about the games against the better teams. Why was he so poor? Bad schemes, choking? Why?
I’m a fan of MR but he really needs to step it up this year! I see the new coaching as a huge help as per screens and better schemes!
Let’s not forget he was throwing to a rookie WR and RW had so many drops this year. HD wasn’t used properly. Oline that only afforded so few seconds to find that 2nd and 3rd option. So I think Ryan will really do much better this yr. I hope anyway.
But if he gets a strong Oline, WR are catching balls and the OC has great plays set up and we still don’t get past that BIG hurdle then we need to look elsewhere. I really really hate saying that.

by Sbaron55 on Feb 1, 2012 9:18 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Can't yet say "that's it"

Even if 2012 doesn’t go as well as hoped with all the changes as you noted, it will be the first year under a completely new scheme – so, I’d be hesitant to write-off Ryan as you noted.

I do think he’ll have yet another good year. I think this year was evidence of it. When he had a solid pocket, he was fantastic. He rocked passer ratings of 110 or higher at least 5 times in his last 8 games – games in which he had much better protection. Even the second loss against the Saints was a good game for him – it was pass drops and horrendous defense that lead to that loss.

Success is internally determined and externally executed.
