Patriots-Ravens AFC Championship Open Thread

The Baltimore Ravens love grinding it out. If they had their way, every single play would be a rush by Ray Rice. After all, why bother doing anything else when Rice is so good and their defense even better?

If the New England Patriots had it their way, they'd do nothing but throw. Why run when you have Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Wes Welker, Deion Branch and a cast of receivers a mile long? Who needs a ground game or defense?

These two vastly different styles meet up for the AFC Championship Game. Follow along with all the action here.

The 4 remaining teams couldn't be worse

1. Everyone hates NE unless you’re a NE fan. They’ve had there fun.
2. The Ravens have Joe Flacco. Need I say more?
3. The 49ers dismantled us 2 times a year for way too long for us to root for them.
4. The only time I’ve ever rooted for a team that beat us was when the Cards went to the SB. I refuse to trot for the Giants.

But for today, go pats.

guy at work yesterday told me he was a Saints fan

Then he moved to Atlanta, when some Saints players became Falcons players like Bobby Herbert, and Morten Andersen.
He said then it became okay to like the Falcons, but his old friends didn’t like that, and somehow he didn’t like the Saints anymore.

Does anyone else share this same sentiment?
I mean it’s weird. Like worshiping the devil!!!

I did not want the cardinals to win in 2008

They were like the bears in 2006 and seahawks in 2005
Overachievers that I knew wasn’t really that good…a fluke.

The niners however I feel different about.
I knew they were good, but wasn’t quite there.

I cannot defend the Falcons post season record with a straight face...but if I had to...

I would say that there is some bad luck involved (along with the poor performances).

Dare I say the pressure on Mike Smith & Matt Ryan (deserved) would not be what it is had they say, won one game in the play-offs in 2008 & 2010. But both years our first opponent juat happened to be that team that got “hot” right before the play-offs.

In 2008 the Cards (largely an underwhelming team) got hot as they started the play-offs and came within one improbable catch by the Steelers from winning the Super Bowl.
In 2010 the Packers got “unbelievably hot” 2-3 games before the play-offs and started their own unbeaten streak (that ended this past year with the loss to the Chiefs) including a Super Bowl win.
And now in 2011 we face off against the Giants as they get “hot” and tear their way through the play-offs also beating the aforementioned unbeatable Packers as well. (I think the beat the 49ers and have a Super Bowl rematch with the Pats)

Imagine if the cards fell the right way and in 2008 we faced the Giants or the Panthers first and had obtained that alluding play-off win, or the Seahawks or the Eagles first in 2010, or this year we faced the Lions or Saints?

Some years it may not have mattered. Some years it may have.

As I said, I cant defend the record cause in the end to be the best you have to beat the best. But 0-3 looks really bad where a 3-3 record wouldnt.

What say you?

by MikeJolly on Jan 22, 2012 2:46 PM EST reply actions

people at my job are ripping Matt Ryan and Mike Smith saying they need to be replaced.

Although I disagree with both, I vehemently disagree with Matt Ryan.
Who else are they going to go with.
You don’t have a 2008 season like that and not be good? Even this year he overcame a bad Oline, bad playcalling, and an inconsistent defense/offense.
Without Matt Ryan, the Falcons are a 5-11 team.

playoff opponents of all Atlanta teams

get “hot” at just the right time, then ride the momentum to the promised land.

Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.

Patriots better win. I don't want Joe Flacco going to a SB before Matt Ryan does lol

I know it sounds silly, but thats just how I feel.

Super Bowl Rematch

I thinks the Patriots stomp the Ravens, and the Giants squeak out a win against the 49ers for a Super Bowl rematch. I know, wrong thread, but I’m sticking with this one for now.

looks like they are frustrating Flacco on his receivers

even though Simms said earlier some guys were open.
They have to get the running game going or shorten some of the routes or some crossing routes.
