Double Tight End Sets For the Falcons?

Ok so we all know how well the Pats do with their double tight end sets. And we have the best TE to ever play the game in Gonzo. I think that our offense could definitely benefit from doing more double tight end sets. Having Gonzo and a potential FA/draft pick in the middle with a RB notation would help Roddy and Jones get open outside. It would also help disguise our weaknesses on the O Line by giving Matty two quick options to go to if the rush gets to him. We all know Ryan doesnt have a huge cannon, so having these two options could create better options and mismatches all over the field. It could also be argued that it would help in what we want to do in the screen game. The only downside I can see people like Douglas not getting the role I think they deserve. Any thoughts/ideas/etc? Or am I just making up the perfect world in my mind?

Lets' keep the focus on the basics

The teams that are beating us in the regular season and leaving us in the dust in the playoffs are beating us on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.Only when we become more competitive there, will the various schematics and play selections be available and fruitful.

I’m hoping the management can refrain from being envious of the varying strenghts of other teams and return the focus to building the Falcons as they originally intended. In the Steelers and Ravens philisophical model.Line of scrimmage performance is the top priority toward that end.The rest will flow well from there.

Well said

But, we obviously cannot drastically improve that much in one offseason. Signing Nicks and a d lineman would obviously go a long, long ways towards improvement but until we get to that point I feel like this could help our O line. On run plays we would have an extra blocker, and on pass plays if the line breaks then Matty Ice will have two reliable options to dump it off to. Just givin the kid a fightin chance.

You're both right

The offensive line will benefit by having an offense that keeps the defense off balance. That can be done a variety of ways – including using screens, quick-outs and even using TEs and RBs to chip on their routes.

That said, the Falcons got dominated at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Our offensive line allowed too much pressure and our defensive line couldn’t generate it. Once we get these two things fixed, the offensive plans will come together.

IF I remember correctly Palmer was a pretty good pass catching TE in college

Don’t understand the aversion to throwing him the ball while he’s been here. Granted we have Tony, but MM was the WORST at using all his weapons available. It made my eyes bleed.

Technically the glass is always full. 1/2 air. 1/2 water.

Honestly...

I am not with joining that little “trend.” The reason that it works so well for the Pats is b/c they have two All-Pro WORTH TE’s. IF we eventually go to this, it might work. But for the moment we need to get great at what we are trying to do now. Remember we don’t have the same potent offense that Tom Brady leads.

We Have

More weapons on this offense than Brady has had in every other year other than the undefeated campaign. I agree with the post above, if we use all of them this could be an incredible offense. Im not saying a permanent double tight end set, but at least mixing it in would give us a new look and a new wrinkle which would make our team much more unpredictable and help keep our defense form playing 45 minutes every game.
