What Are Healthy Expectations For The 2012 Falcons Season?
It's absurdly early to be talking about this, but it's a long off-season. We'll get to re-visit this topic more than once.
The topic, as you might have noted from the title, is what we can reasonably expect from the Atlanta Falcons in 2012. Going into last season, I caught heat for predicting an 11-5 finish from those who thought I went too low (14-2! 13-3!) and those who thought I went too high (8-8! 9-7!) It turned out I went a bit too high, but I think I was close.
Except for the fact that the Falcons didn't really look great getting to 10-6, of course.
For this season, let's calibrate our expectations. The Falcons have two new coordinators, will likely revamp the offensive line and won't be returning about 10-15% of its 2011 squad. There's bound to be growing pains, but I'm not ready to get hysterical about it yet.
So my prediction is 10-6. I think the Falcons will take a small step back thanks to changes in scheme and personnel, but ultimately I think they'll be a better football team overall. Whether that's good enough to get them into the playoffs or not, I don't claim to know.
Your turn.

And we beat the Aint’s by an 84-14 margin in both games!!
Doesn’t get more realistic than this folks…lol

"To win, I'd run over Joe's mom too." - Matt Millen, formerly of the Raiders

19-0
far more realistic
It's Great! To be! A Tennessee Vol!
Depends on our scehdule....
But Im going with 12-4. Optimistic yes, but anything that will change has got to be better than a Mularkey offense and that bs zone heavy D.

I agree.
We’ll see how FA shakes out, but we’ve got smart guys with a solid track record in that department. I also expect to see better individual performances – particularly on defense – with the change at D coordinator and simply more consistency (and an increase in PPG) from the offense. I predict a Top 10 D and Top 15 O, with 12 wins and at least one playoff win.
by HotLunch4You on Jan 20, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions
I am also
Seeing 12-4. One thing we are not remembering is that Nolan is a Master motivator that gets the best out of his Guys. That should alone Boost our D to Elite levels (Seeing as how Ray Edwards and Dunta Robinson may need a little extra Push). Another thing Dirk seems to be a pretty Aggressive guy as playcalling is concerned, I think we have a Very good year Seeing as how we may catch teams by surprise how aggressive we are.

There's no way to know until free agency and draft happen
But I’ll go with 11-5 as well assuming Matt Ryan gets free reign of this offense and a revamped O line. That schedule next year really does not scare me. Hopefully the Aints have a step back year and we can take control of the NFC South
So, on a more serious...
note from me. I agree with most of this, but next years schedule is no walk in the park!!

It is posted -the schedule
I’ll go for another 10-6, start slow and get better again, if we make the playoffs one wild card win. Too much disruption already to expect much more. 2013 though, different deal!
Needs/Wants
Trade the Burner and Dunta for a 1st round pick. Resign Grimey, and somehow get Carl Nicks, Terrell Thomas, and Aubrayo Franklin to wear the red and black next season. Save the 1st round pick for Turner’s replacement, maybe Richardson from Bama?

12 Wins
I feel the difference between BVG/Mularkey and Nolan/Dirk is a solid +2 in the wins department. It can also be argued that next years schedule shouldn’t be quite as brutal – this year’s was pretty tough.
Let's take a look-see at the schedule
Home Games:
Dallas
New York Giants
Arizona
Denver
Oakland
Tampa Bay
New Orleans
Carolina
Away Games:
Philadelphia
Washington
Detroit
Kansas City
San Diego
Tampa Bay
New Orleans
Carolina
It’s hard because we can’t know what will happen with Free Agency and what our schemes will look like, but if I had to guess today I’d go with 11-5. I actually am cautiously optimistic that the team looks better on the field than last year. At home, I could see losing to the Cowboys and beating New York, or vice versa, but feel we drop one of those two, and I can see Cam coming into the Dome and getting a win. On the road, I think we lose to the Saints, Detroit gets revenge, and we either lose to San Diego or Philly (and possibly both).
As for post-season, I think we tie with the Saints but lose on tiebreakers, get the 5th seed again, and win a playoff game. After that, who the hell knows.
11-5 with sweeps of Tampa and Carolina. NO series 1 home win each. Loss to Philly. Most important game of the season to my family is the San Diego game (Wife and step-kids are from San Diego). Since I want a Falcons win badly, they will ultimately lose it in heartbreaking fashion and I will be sleeping at a friends house that night.

Hey Caviar,
I see some of your family is from San Diego. I live out there, and born and raised. A bunch of us fans are going to the game. We would like you and your family to join us. Do you live out here as well? Or you from GA? Been to all Falcon-Charger games here, and the Falcons have never lost. I didn’t check to see if you had an e-mail address, so we can do a better correspondence, and I’ll fill you in on some other details.

by looking at the schedule provided by kman_722
this is going to be as tough as a schedule as this past season, if not a little bit harder so im gonna predict 10-6 but with more consistancy than without like this past year.
I say with more agressive playcalling and...
with our new coordinators we go 12-4. I see NYG, Dallas, Philly, NO (x2) and Detroit giving us fits but I see us winning 2 of those 6 games and at least one NO game being one of them. I think we handle the remaining schedule pretty well.
Of course, as people have motioned…there is still allot of personnel changes coming, for all 32 teams so we shall see how it all shakes out after the draft.

Agreed...I think we lose 6 but play MUCH more consistently and better against good teams
Technically the glass is always full. 1/2 air. 1/2 water.
Looking at our home games..
..i say its realistic that we only drop 1, maybe 2 and away i can see us going 4-4, so i can see us going 11-5, i just hope the Saints aren’t the first to be back to back NFC south champs!!!
The Saints' D, even with Spags, might be a liability next year.
And since we have less of an issue on D AND we have Nolan, we might be able to take it to them. Plus, we have a screen game now and the perfect back to run them with in Quizz.
I’m pretty optimistic.

by SouthFLAFalcon on Jan 20, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions
Beat me to it
We’ve got an OC who says he is going to call more screens, the real challenge is going to be getting the Olinemen to focus on their blocks instead of whether or not the RB catches the ball.

11-5
With at least one postseason victory. We brought these guys in to get a postseason victory. Cant do that without winning in the regular season. Therefore If we dont get that win, then the 2012 season should be considered a failure. A postseason win and consistency. The rest will take care of itself.
by jackofallspades on Jan 20, 2012 1:16 PM EST reply actions
10 - 6
We face a lot of teams with great quarterback play this year, and we have (2) new coordinators and there will be a lot of personnel turnover too. That’s realistic I think. We get one of the two wildcard slots again and have to earn our keep on the road in the playoffs.
Technically the glass is always full. 1/2 air. 1/2 water.
Agree that the draft and free agency will temper predictions
and agree with several that I could see us going 11-5. Based on the talent we have now, and assuming no huge impact from the coordinators. If reality bites, I could see us doing the 10-6 Dave predicts.
Ill hedge my bet at 10-6
Really I don’t care as long as we make the playoffs. Which for this team sounds less promising than it should.
by pierre02 on Jan 20, 2012 1:34 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Anywhere between 9-7 and 11-5
We are facing an equally difficult schedule next year as we did in this last year. I see Philadelphia getting better next year and we might take a loss there, and I see Dallas handing us a loss also. The Giants might be the first to feel our new gameplan because of the bad feelings from this past playoff season. Carolina will be the team to watch out for not only in our division but the league next year. They have Cam Newton with a year under his belt and a solid team. I see them getting at us with a win and finally our old pal New Orleans. I say we split the games and they are our usual big time rival with close games but we show off a little in one game and finally take them in a not so close game. Plus we hit the playoffs again and we are bound to break the one game curse and I am hopeful that this next year will be it.

Count me in the 10-6 crowd
I think we’ll win some we should lose and probably lose a couple we should win. Over all, I expect to see some improvement across the board resulting in a late season charge into the playoffs, and woe be unto whoever faces us in that first playoff game!
Return of Mike Johnson is crucial
But remember,Johnson is only 24 years old and Hawley is just 23.I think it was the right thing to do to go younger and more athletic on the Oline but, this was a tough year to begin that with the lockout and lack of organized off season.
So McClure probably retires. We get organic improvement from the younger guys and a normal off season. We can recover the step back that the Oline took this year but,it’s not enough to compete with playoff defenses.Oline help is essential
We can draft and sign FA CBs until the cows come home.It will make no difference in the playoffs agains the Packers,Giants,Saints or Cowboys offenses without dramatic improvement in the pass rush from the Dline.
I’m going to say absent a serious infusion of talent on both lines of scrimmage,10 – 6 does not get us into the playoffs and we fall behind the Bears,Seahawks,Cowboys and Lions in the NFC.
I had us at 10-6, so I nailed it last year (can’t prove it because I didn’t post here then). I can see anything from 9-7 to 11-5, so I’ll go right down the middle and say 10-6. This could change, obviously with free agency and draft, up or down.
by ChardeeMacDennis on Jan 20, 2012 3:02 PM EST reply actions
I say
Anything from 10-6 to 12-4. I think that 10-6 is more realistic. The Saints will come back down this season, and the Panthers a lot better if they can avoid injuries. Gonna be a lot of fun in 2012, I think.
Evil Falcon
Right now I feel like 11-5
But there’s so much that has to go on before the start of the season…this team could look very different in August.

Honestly?
I expect more than a little regression from this squad. I anticipate a loss of quite a few free agents, especially on defense (in anticipation of a move to a 3-4 in the future). The defense will be a little worse, and the offense, by and large, will be mostly the same. I’d say our schedule has the same overall difficulty as last year.
So I say 8-8, maybe 9-7.
19-0 including the POSTSEASON!!!!

Worse players, better coaches.
Home:
NYG
Dallas
Denver
Oakland
Arizona
Fracking Saints
TB
Carolina
Away:
Washington
Philadelphia
SD
KC
Detroit
TB
Stupid Butt Pirates
Carolina
Thoughtful Analysis:
- NFC SOuth – As dirtybirds233 above, I always assume 3-3 in the division.
-NFC East – We barely beat the Eagles @ home, I doubt we beat them in Philly. Split with the Giants/Cowboys, win against the Skins. 2-2
AFC West – I think we win all these games, if the Chargers decide to play in their own house, they might be tough. A conservative 3-1
Detroit on the road is a loss (unless the D makes huge strides up front) Arizona is a Win. 1-1
A conservative 9-7, but those AFC West games are the toss up. All together, I say we’ll be a slightly worse personnel team, but will have the coaching, adjustments, and time management to win the close games.
Perilously close to a 2007 style depression.
3-3 in the divison?
No will take a step back and Car and TB don’t scare me. I think 5-1 or 4-2 is more probable.
by pierre02 on Jan 20, 2012 6:50 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Here's where I'm coming from:
Last season, the Bucs and Panthers both went 2-4 (.333) which is well below their average winning percentages of .483 and .533, respectively. Only twice have NFC South teams had losing intra-divisional records in back to back years, so theoretically, there’s a 95% chance that both of those teams improve their records to (at least) 3-3.
In the 40 team-seasons history of the division, (4 teams x 10 years = 40 seasons) there have only been six 5-1 intra-divisional records, or about 1 every other year. Four of those seasons coincided with another team going 1-5 or 0-6. I certainly don’t see any team in the division going 1-5.
The Saints won’t slip to 1-5, but even if they do, a 5-1 season would mandate that the Falcons performance this season be better than 85% of the seasons in NFC South history. Put another way: 6 NFC South teams have gone to the NFC Championship Game, and 6 NFC South teams have gone 5-1; I don’t think we’ll be that good.
Obviously these numbers take a rather binary view of things, but the fact is that a 5-1 record in this division is a statistical anomaly, and with TB and CAR improving, I don’t see it happening.
Perilously close to a 2007 style depression.
I'm going with 9-7
It’s possible that we could lose five of our away games. Our schedule isn’t a walk in the park. However, a lot depends on what happens in FA/draft, and how our new coaches implement their scheme (Mostly concerned with the offensive side). I’m wishful that 9-7 is a VERY conservative prediction.

Realistically I predict 9-7…….hopeful wildcard team again.
Two teams in the last five years have replaced both OC/DC and won the Super Bowl
We can be the third. 10 wins and we got hot late, finally.
When considering this year's 10-6 regular season

think that the Panthers are going to be amazing next year. All I saw out of that team was a bad team, with a qb that got figured out after the 5th game of the season.
It's Great! To be! A Tennessee Vol!
I dunno
I worry about the Panthers a bit, myself, but I don’t see us losing to them both times. I figure we split at worst. But basically, they got a lot better in the second half, Rivera’s good with defense, so he’ll get that sorted out, and Newton merely needs to cut his interceptions by about a third to make them a winning team.
by ChardeeMacDennis on Jan 20, 2012 6:25 PM EST up reply actions
I feel like they're not just one piece
but many, many pieces away from being a “scary” team. The defense, yes, did get better. And the offense wasn’t bad… But Newton’s inaccurate, makes bad decisions, and is a slightly faster Tebow in the running game.
I just don’t see in them a team that’s going to go from 4-12 to making the playoffs in one year.
It's Great! To be! A Tennessee Vol!
Saints won't be that good next year
There going to lose alot of FA’s plus they can’t count on our predictability anymore. I hope…

anywhere between 9-7 and 13-3
depending on luck. by luck I mean when we face or do not face a team going up or down. sometimes you may have a good season and lose to a team you thought was weak, but somehow got inspired to win. and vice versa – if we catch a team like Aints with Brees ill (no broken bones, just flu) – we get an easy win even at NO.
but I couldn’t care less about this record or our position. we got to make the playoffs and bring home at least one scalp or else I say it’s another one of those “process” years.

A cautious 11-5
Hoping for 11 & 5 but 10 & 6 seems more realistic. With new personel and new schemes being implimented there may be some growing pains as Dave noted. We also have to consider our opponents the afc west and nfc east as well as our own and I dont wanna say it but Cam is growing up fast…just something to keep in mind. I forget who our other 2 out of division opponents are. I think one maybe Detroit but not sure. I think our easier games may come out of the Afc west with the exception of San Diego I dont feel the threat of a loss from Oakland KC or Denver but who knows any givin sunday

2012 is the turn of the tide for this franchise. They have to have some kind of consistency on both sides of the ball because that’s what the FO is looking for. Hope:We all get shocked seeing DK and MN improve our teams. Cam, Freeman don’t improve and Breesus does not do as great as this season. Ryan goes elite status and matching up to a Stafford-ish with the deep ball. Also, Julio becomes a Pro Bowler without drops and takes Roddy’s Crown as the go to receiver. Spoon breaks out with 20+ sacks. El Sid, HD, Quizzly Bear, and the Snell all get their time to shine. Falcons finally have a team where if the O has an off day the D can back them up and vice versa. We learn how to beat 10 win teams and win a playoff game, and become the SB longshots winning the NFC South- 12-4
Worry:Falcons take a step back. We all realize and think Ryan might not be the answer. The coordinators did not help and even harmed our team. MS gets on a seat hotter than Jim Rome. We get compared to teams like the Chargers, Cowboys, and heaven forbid the Broncos. We can’t beat 8-8 teams. Players get injured and key UFA leave us. Oh football gods, please don’t let this happen. We love thou! 8-8/ 7-9

11-5 if ....
Edwards becomes the sack monster he was supposed to be and if Nolan can get Dunta to become the ferocious DB he was meant to be. If Roddy can catch a ball better than he can catch a cold … if Turner doesn’t have to carry the entire load when we try to run the ball. If Quizz and Snelling can get some high YAC numbers on all those screen passes Dirk is going to call … if Ryan can connect with JJ and HD on the deep ball when opponents are sold on running and screen plays … if we get rid of some of that trash we call the o-line and then make some good trades to get someone who can actually protect Ryan and who is big and strong enough to get us 1 yard on those 3rd and 4th down attempts … if we can finally get a player from FA with great talent instead of someone who we thought was great but ended up only have a “great” paycheck (see Edwards and Dunta) … if TD works his magic to make up for the bust that was called the Falcon’s draft 2011 … if MS and the new coordinators and coaches work their a$$es off this offseason to finally figure out how to use the team and players the right way then I say we will be 11 and 5 in 2012. And if the Falcons can play with some kind of swagger and “stomp on your throat” football instead of playing not to lose than I think we can finally get our first playoff win since 98 and we may even make it a superbowl run next year.

or Bust.

I want a playoff win
I’m hoping for 9-7, wildcard win, better position in and a huge draft for 2013, with solid fundamental growth and consistency.
Hope 11-5, Worry 8-8
The schedule looks like a wash from this year. We catch the AFC West instead of the South, but the South was putrid other than the Texans. NFC East this year could be trouble. Hopefully we catch Dallas late in the season during their usual collapse. Philly and NY will be trouble, as will Detroit. I’m not sure when we want to have the Chargers, and who does?
I think the coordinators make a difference. Offense gets a little better under Koetter, defense loses people (Grimes, Abe, Lofton), and we try to cobble together some kind of hybrid 3-4 / 4-3 thing. Defense regresses, and the offense has to bail out the defense for a change. Nolan coaches his ass off and gets the talent up to a sub-average level by the end of the season.
Birds miss the playoffs by one game.
Rather have the Chargers early
As my second most hated team, I’ve been looking forward to this one since the first Matt Ryan Chargers game a few years back. They go on a rampage in December. Early early early.

It's still rediculously early to even be thinking about 2012's record
but, without major losses I can see our defense jumping from 12th to 6th. Nolan seems to have an immediate impact wherever he goes. If the playcalling is better and MR is let off the leash more, the offense could jump from 10th to top 5.
We’re just throwing facts and opinions at the wall here but I wouldn’t be suprised with a 10-6 to 13-3 record.
Next year's prediction
I think it’s too early. Let’s see what happens after the Falcons go through free agency. Actually, I wouldn’t mind them taking a step back (e.g., 8-8) if they ultimately improve the following years.
I just want this team to compete.
I’m glad we settled on our OC and DC early. Gives them more time to work on new system. Lot of changes going to happen. Me,myself and I just wants another winning season. Hoping for 9-7! Just hope we’re competitive and play good team ball. Anything more would be gravey for me. Carry on!
