(For now. Wouldn't be one bit surprised to see things move toward a hybrid system in 2013. Then again, his San Francisco team's defense ended up being more of a 4-3 than a 3-4 by the end, so they say. Then again, other things.)

"Nolan: I'd rather have 10 guys get four sacks than have four get 10 each."

Fascinating comment. I agree. You can gameplan for great pass rushers. But how do you gameplan for a defense where everyone is an adequate to good pass rusher/blitzer (and more importantly given the opportunity)?

An that's the beauty of the 3-4

It’s always easier to pinpoint one or two players but when you have 5 or 6 that can create pressure. It’s beautiful.

Not buying it

I seriously don’t think we can escape without chaning to a hybrid. There’ll be some 3-4 looks thrown in over the offseason, I can all but guarantee it. That’s just the way it has to be. Please?

You're right. Here's another part of his answer.

Q. Will you switch to 3-4 defense?

A. It’s my philosophy that you build your scheme around the players and not the other way around. What has been built there is a very solid foundation on a 4-3 defense. In my 25 years in the NFL, 14 years as a coordinator, seven of them have been in a 4-3 and seven have been in a 3-4. I’m very familiar with both. When I’ve been in a 4-3 I’ve frequently used the 3-4 as part of it. It would appear to me that is what is best for that football team.

Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.

Question

At the risk of sounding totally stupid. Can someone explain to me the difference between 3-4 and 4-3 other than the way they line up?

by Danny Hall on Jan 18, 2012 12:50 PM EST reply actions

It really is pretty much just the way they line up. That and personal is different in a 4-3 you got 4 lineman and 3 LB’s and in a 3-4 its the opposite. Other differences from their just go to different responsibilities for those LB’ers and DE’s.

Thanks for your reply. Apparently, I have a lot to learn about defenses…

by Danny Hall on Jan 18, 2012 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

3-4:
Stops run with 3 huge down linemen clogging up the o-line and big linebackers getting after ball carrier. D-line typically responsible for 2 gaps.
Generates pressure against the pass with athletic outside linebackers rushing the passer and/or through creative blitz schemes.

4-3:
Stops run with smaller, penetrating d-line and smaller (relatively speaking), faster linebackers filling in gaps.
Generates pressure utilizing quick, athletic defensive line with DE’s as primary pass rushers.

4-3 personnel works best with premier inside and outside pass rushing linemen and an overall smaller, faster defense to rally to ball carrier.

3-4 caters to huge linemen and dominant outside backers.

All depends on your personnel.

Follow Up

From what you stated and how the NFC is such a throw happy bunch, the 4-3 would be a better fit.. Correct?

by Danny Hall on Jan 18, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

In theory

yes, the 4-3 should work better against the pass.

here's the issue I have

I’ve heard arguments that 3-4 is better against the run and better against the pass. i’ve also heard arguments that 4-3 is better against the run and pass.

Personally, I think both are fine defenses. As long as they’re used correctly

They both have their pros and cons

It’s all about how you fit your players into the pros and cover up the cons

I agree completely

Unfortunately, BVG wasn’t very good at that.

In Nolan, I trust

Every defense he’s taken over has improved dramatically the following year.

Don't know

I was skeptical at first (surprise, eh?), but he says his 14 years as OC have been split between the 4 3 and the 3 4. Now if his tenures at the Jets and Broncos (both one year stints) were in the 4 3, then my concern mounts. Does anyone know what defenses he ran there? Pretty sure the Broncos were a 4 3.

by Whopper Dawg on Jan 18, 2012 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Both were 3-4, actually

2009 DEN was the first year to switch. Pretty sure he left because Josh McDaniels was incompetent. They were the #7 Defense by DVOA in 2009. They were 31st in 2008 and 30th in 2010. Don’t think there’s any reason for concern there.

2000 NYJ he was DC under first year Head Coach Al Groh (who was Linebackers Coach under HC Bill Parcells and DC Bill Belichick, running a 3-4 the year before). They went 9-7, had the #4 Defense by DVOA in 2000 (#14 in 1999)… and everybody got fired. Herm Edwards came in at HC and they switched to a 4-3 in 2001.
