Defensive Coordinator Speculation Thread
The Falcons and Saints are chasing Steve Spagnuolo. Apparently, there's talk on 790 that the Falcons have their guy already. Candidate names are flying like crazy.
Use this as your all-purpose speculation thread for the afternoon and evening hours. Hopefully we'll have an announcement tomorrow.
Get excited, everyone.

Better be Spags
What did 790 say and who is that guy? This curiosity is killing me….
I was listening
and Dave Archer said he the DC was chosen and we could here about it tommorow. I hope this is not all hearsay and rumors so I am staying kind of guarded about it.
I think it's probably Dave Choate.
He seems to know what he’s talking half of the time.

idk..
Dave Choate seems to drink the kool-aide a bit much. It’s probably FrozenFinger. He’s got that “if you ain’t first, you’re last” attitude.

More or less
I like to think I’d be a slightly better GM, but I did prefer Dorsey over Ryan…

I Did Too
but thats because when ever i think of a qb going top 3 its david carr, joey harrington, akilie smith…
Agreed
top QB is always a crapshoot (unless it’s one of those super-duper incredibly rare players), and in theory a top 3 drafted DT is a player you can just pencil in for a decade as a pro-bowler.
It's Great! To be! A Tennessee Vol!
Yeah Im Glad
we took matty its too bad glen didnt turn into what he was projected to be, maybe he still can who knows
Definitely
I wanted us to draft Dorsey and trade up to get Flacco. Wtf was I smokin?
by FLA_Falcon on Jan 16, 2012 4:45 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
of course you would have been in the room during Matty's interview
and that was what swayed them apparently. I wasn’t sure about the pick but it sure turned out to be the right one.
That's outrageous

A pox on you Dave for dropping that nugget and leaving us to wonder and salivate!
Though the salivation may be from the Twix bar I’m about to eat.
what other names are they saying?

As long as we get him or Spags im happy.
Nolan works miracles with Defs…in any scheme.

Sounded like
Archer was hinting at Nolan.

Dave Archer just said we may find out tomorrow who the DC is.
"The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us."
Twitter
It certainly sounds like
the Eagles are out of the Spags picture and the Saints and Falcons are the front-runners to secure his services. I don’t need to say which one of those I hope lands him. I hope that sound you can hear is Arthur Blank writing a check that falls into the “offer that you can’t refuse” category.
Arthur strikes me as a guy
who might also make a ‘horse head in your bed’ kind of offer you can’t refuse.
lol. I agree completely!
In all seriousness, I can’t imagine another owner impressing a potential candidate the way Arthur can. He’s a guy I’d like to work for.

if only that was true

I think Dave has the inside scoop...
Come on man…we know you have the capital connections. Who is it?
by Bigru3 on Jan 16, 2012 4:19 PM EST via mobile reply actions
All I hear is speculation, generally speaking
The short list that DOL laid out the other day is pretty much it, though I’ve heard names like Todd Bowles sprinkled in. My guess is Nolan, but that’s based on Archer’s assertion that they have the guy in-house already. Spags seems like he hasn’t made a decision yet.

It would be Interessting
To see what the Flacons would do to adapt to the 3-4 via free agency and the draft.
by bdasbury on Jan 16, 2012 4:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
To be fair
What I didn’t realize when I first looked into Nolan is that he’s run 4-3/3-4 hybrids in the past. He could certainly do that with a few personnel tweaks in Atlanta.

Yea its all situational...
The only problem the personel has to be focused…guys are constantly being rotated in and out. It was poorly executed in san fran…lots of penalties and mental lapes on assignments. Like who is in and who is out

at least we did before this year
how bad did we rate on penalties, missed tackles and dropped balls?
Yea just a week ago Spags didnt want to work this year...
Like I stated above either one of these guys would make me happy. Spags is the big name and Nolan is currently under rated. I actually think I give Nolan more props…hes made good def out every team hes coached. Cant say the same for Spags.
by Bigru3 on Jan 16, 2012 4:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
as long as
Atlanta gets a great coordinator and NO gets a horrible one, I’ll be ecstatic.

You have actually convinced me.
Nolan has built a defense everywhere he has coached. He can do the same here. Bring on Nolan.
Sweet haha

I Take Back What I Said
I Think the Dirk will be a great OC, listened to the phone call, and i loved what i herd plus his name is DIRK, Dirks are known to be amazing at offense see dirk nowitzki lolol :)
I want to know now!
It’s like being a kid at Christmas. Just looking at the presents, not knowing what’s in them.
by FLA_Falcon on Jan 16, 2012 4:34 PM EST via mobile reply actions
If an announcement is imminent
Then I would put my money on Nolan.
Spags is still “waiting to see what develops”.
So I doubt it’s him if we are making an annoucement soon.
Also, I am not sure if spags coaches ANYWHERE next year. He will get a million for sitting on his tail…
Can someone tell me what Nolan offers?
All i can see from his Wiki page is a load of 2/3 year DC jobs and his defence this year seemed great against the run but 25th against the pass….but please enlighten me, i know stats don’t tell the whole story.
I'm trying to read between the lines from numerous reports....
It sounds to me like the guy (supposedly already in place) wouldn’t be Nolan or Spags…
After that, I’m kind of lost.
Put me on suicide watch.
Perilously close to a 2007 style depression.
At this point I'm not expecting a "big name guy"
I could be wrong, but since our defense isn’t that far off, and our biggest weakest is rushing the passer I’m expecting it to be someone who specializes in that area… Not excluding collegiate candidates, as Dimitroff and Smitty are known for exploring all options…
Stonewall Jackson for DC
our pass rush would be amazing, although i heard he has been out of coaching for a while but thats the only negative
It WON'T be Spags
If what 790 said is true. A source close to him said that Spags is going to take a few more days to see what he wants to do…so if we already have our guy, it isn’t him.
by dirtybirds233 on Jan 16, 2012 5:04 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I will move to Jacksonville
If it is Jack Del Rio
While it would be quite funny...
It would really, really bother me.
I'd be surprised if it was either Nolan or Spags
TD and Smith seem to have their own metrics for what they want for a coordinator and it rarely seems to match up with what we the fans think of.
Agreed!
Also if a big name DC has a clue that Smitty might be on a hot seat with a one year window, would they want to get involved?
Might make them MORE likely to get involved
Perilously close to a 2007 style depression.
It is going to be nolan
i am 90% sure at this point

Well kinda. I’m not 90% sure it’ll be Nolan but I’m 100% sure it won’t be Spags.

Anyone know enough
to know if it’s possible we could have a shot at Mario Williams? I know they can’t tender him (over $20 mill) but I’m not sure if he gets resigned. He’d be a nice addition, particularly if we go with Nolan, as he could help with the transition to 3-4.

Actually, we're ok on cap room
If we move a few key veterans, we can free up a good bit of cap space to go after some big name free agents. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t happen.
If they franchise tag him,
it means he’s owed $21,000,000. I’m thinking they’ll resign him or let him walk.

I'm not sure.
He is a great DC but is more of a 3-4 guy. His success just depends on how smoothly the transition goes. Remember back in the day when Trent Dilfer leaned on that Baltimore D to get a super bowl title? Nolan was the DC for them…

I am confused why he was WR coach for the ravens in 2001
doesn’t really make sense to me, but the ravens have been consitently in the top 5 for man many many years I have no problem with the signing, just pointing out it wasn’t his defence that was one of the top 3 in history. But then if people are gonna use that as a flaw against him then those people are rather delusional

Gotta think we go big name here after the OC hire...
I really think our defense is ONE solid starter/borderline-pro bowl level DT from being nasty in a non-BVG scheme…especially if we let Dunta’s sorry @ss rot on the bench and Owens/Franks continue to improve the way they finished out the season

I'm starting to think
that Spags is the better fit, but Nolan the better long term choice. Spags has a history of blitzing out of the 4-3, and of winning despite undersized lineman and thin secondarys, which is relevant to our D now. But Nolan might be the better long term option, assuming he stays long enough to see us transition fully to a 3-man front.

I like nolan
sadly i dont think we have the draft fire power to give him ALL the tools but that just means he has to mold what he has into what he want, which i think is part of his job description anyways.
