Era of the DK: The Beginning?
Today when I woke up and saw that the Falcons had a new OC, I went ape shit to find out who it was. When I found out who it was I honestly had to scratch my head and i said "what the hell? What is it with JAX and ATL trading staff?" I honestly can say I was disappointed with this guy at first glance. I mean didn't MM run a better ranked offense than this guy?
Now once, I checked up on this guy's credentials and thought about the tools he had in Jax, I can say I got a little more comfortable. I also read this interview on his offensive philosophy: http://xandolabs.com/2011/07/dirk-koetter-exclusive-interview/#ixzz1jYbq2sYJ. Anyway, so you don't have to check up on this guy I will just put his long story short, he took many (at the time) small name college programs such as Boise St. ('98 - '00) and Arizona St. ('01 - '06), and turned them into potent offensive teams then earned his way onto the Jaguars in 2007 as the OC. He made the Jaguars into a top-10 offense, until they slowly kept dipping into their current offensive slump. At this you might go "well, he is just a flash in the pan then." I say NO to that assumption b/c of the fact of how with the offense slumping his weapons were also depleted accordingly year-to-year. He also mentored many players into quality weapons at their positions such as Mojo (MJD), Marcedes Lewis, and even Garrard for a healthy two seasons. Now with that in mind, you must look at the offensive weapons of the Falcons. This guy has never had the arsenal we have put in front of him to work with. I think TD is sane enough to know he made a quality choice, and I must declare after all the headhunting for MM I did, I can't say I'm not happy to see him gone. Before we start another headhunt, let's rejoice in the fact of the fresh new mind we got at the helm of our offense and let him have a warm welcome to Falcon Country. B/C everybody knows that the support of someone (the fans) can go a LONG way with your mental chi. So before we wish bad juju on the new kid. Let's Welcome our new offensive coordinator: Mr. Dirk Koetter. He might just be the One who leads us to the promise land or better yet DISNEYLAND.

I agree
I don’t know why everyone is going dogging the hire. Nothing of substance can really be taken from his last few years in Jax, he had nothing to work with. Give the guy a chance before you crucify him.
Speculation About Verticle Game
I read here and there where the Falcons and Koetter need to go deep. I see it differently.
Yes throwing deep occasionally is necessary to stretch defenses, and even better if we hit one or two. No matter how you spin it, Ryan simply does not have an arm for the deep ball. Julio constantly out ran his passes and had to pull up to stay underneath the ball.
Ryan’s throw at the end of the first half, of Giants’ game supports my contention. Rainbow pass, only 45 yards, give or take.
However, we don’t need to throw deep successfully to win, just ask Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. What is needed, in my opinion is crossing patterns to Julio, screens to Rodgers (or Turner for now) , the out patterns White does so well, and go routes when adjusting for blitzes.
You ever see Ryan throw an quick dart to White or Jones, when being blitzed? I don’t remember any.
I say look at Tom Brady and Wes Welker, and the Patriots’ tight ends. Like the Montana and Rice days, it was not bombs away that won games, it was excellent short and middle passing with the receivers BREAKING TACKLES that put points on the board.
Finally, I am not a believer in Harry Douglas. I see him as another fragile player who cannot break a tackle. If he has sure hands, and could jump in a crowd then that would overcome his inability to make yards after the catch.
My two points are that you can win big in the NFL with medium and short passing games, and the Falcons did not do it well. Then you need to create something after the catch and we don’t do that well either.
That is where we needed Jones, to be sure and we got him because he has it all, and can break tackles.
However, I think the Falcons’ offense is actually on the downside, and needs a major influx.
1) Gonzalez is old and frankly we signed him this year out of desperation. We are not “cutting him one year too soon, rather than one year too late” as is our professed philosophy. He cannot break tackles.
2) White is an out route, possession receiver who drops balls in big games. Also too emotional when game is big. Not good. This is as good as he gets, and when he is touched, he goes down like $20 hooker.
3) Turner is done. Way past his prime. The average life of a running back is 3.5 years, and we used him heavily for four years. He cannot create anything and has poor hands. I like Rodgers, and we need him.
So, the vaunted Falcons’ offense is actually in trouble, and until we get a beastie offensive line, and don’t play creatively then we get 2011. Weak.
Koetter, good luck. We need you and you are the man on the spot, along with Coach Smith.
Mr. Mustard
1
draft a TE.
2. Roddy’s fine, quit hatin
3. That’s debatable considering everybody is forgetting that Turner was always a downhill runner and needed holes opened for him…look at Jerome Bettis. Also we’ll have to draft an all-purpose back anyway to run screens.
Debatable points cause of what we have NOW in personel and scheme.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
Also, taking a step back and looking at the playoffs this year...
As NO and GB have cleary shown us that scoring a lot of points isn’t everything unless you can play some defense and run the ball.
