It's been said that Clements didn't want to leave GB

And I guess Billick didn’t want to go back to being an OC (and I think the brother-in-law dynamic would’ve made things messy anyways). But sheesh, I’m having a hard time getting excited about this guy. I guess the only thing I’ve seen that I’ve liked, from his Wikipedia page, was from his head coaching days at ASU

Under Koetter, the Sun Devils became known for a vertical passing attack.

What we all have to hope for is that his lack of success the past couple of seasons was due to a lack of talent rather than poor scheming.

Supposedly, he's well-regarded around the NFL

It’s kind of hard to argue that he’s the guy who caused their rookie passer and awful wide receivers to have a horrendous season.

I think the concerns about this rumored hire

would be much less if it were one bad year, but a number of excellent years. All I’ve seen out of Jacksonville in the past 4 years or so is riding MJD until he got hurt.

Ask Jaguars fans what they think of Dirk Koetter, though. Many of them will tell you he was hamstrung by the lack of talent available.

Again, I’d be bullshazzing you if I told you I knew this was going to be a good hire. But I think it’s going to be an upgrade.

You must not know any Jaguars fans.

They all blame DelRio, but they also complain about playcalling.

You may WANT this to be an upgrade, but anyone who’s optimistic right now is just drinking the Kool-aid.

And FWIW, I don’t think Smitty’s ‘situational coaching’ is much better than DelRio’s. The failed QB sneaks on multiple 4th downs is classic JDR.

Look at the Lions, who have my mother-in-law penciled in at RB and WR2 on the depth chart.
Or even Martz in CHI.
Hell, look at the Texans and their 12th string QB.

by FrozenFinger on Jan 15, 2012 11:23 AM EST reply actions

@Chris Mortenson

Koetter replaces Mike Mularkey, who left to become the head coach in Jacksonville on Tuesday. That’s where Koetter spent the past five seasons, coordinating an offense that finished better than 18th in points scored just once. Koetter worked alongside new boss Mike Smith in 2007, and runs a very similar system to Mularkey. The Falcons will not be making radical changes on the offensive side of the ball in 2012.

by Erihury on Jan 15, 2012 11:30 AM EST reply actions

Either one of two things had better be true, otherwise this is incredibly disappointing:

1) Smith and Dimitroff know what they are doing and believe that Koetter can bring the type of change they are looking for, and break through with Atlanta’s offense;

2) They learned of Greg Williams departure from the Saints and signed a cheap OC quickly to free up more money for Spags.

Ideally both are true, but I would definitely prefer a Koetter/Spags combo to a Clements or Billick combo with a no-name DC, especially if the Saints land Spagnuolo.

by nycfalconsfan on Jan 15, 2012 11:31 AM EST reply actions

by Bronn on Jan 15, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

lets look through the first 3 of those four years shall we?

2008: Falcons go from being 4-12 to making the playoffs, our rookie QB is only the 2nd rookie to break 3,000 yards passing, the first being Mr qb P. Manning himself. Not to mention Turner going from being a backup to one of the leagues best rushers. You are not gonna fire you OC after that season.

2009: falcons go 9-7, yeah its a dropoff and we don’t make playoffs but it is the first consecutive winning seasons in falcon’s history, along with injuries to Ryan, Turner, I think half our offensive line at in bits and peices, can’t really say I’d fire him here either.

2010: 13-3 good for no.1 seed in the NFC, Ryan has an absolutely outstanding year, O line is up for Most valuble protectos from John Madden. OK we get to the Playoff game aginst Green bay and we get beat, more than beat we get humiliated. I can see you saying ok maybe that should’ve been the signs to fire him there excpet when you look at the game and see that Green bay didn’t punt that game. Not once. We did not have the pass Rush that game to get at Aaron Rodgers while he was on the hottest streak I’ve ever seen from a QB. We got torched on defense that game plain and simple, of course there were offensive mistakes as well but when the oppssong team doesn’t punt even once its a bit harsh to say that it is the offense’s fault. I can see a desire to get away from him but hey we just went first in the NFC and coaches and even media beleive we are one or 2 key players away from winning it all, can’t say if I was in TD or Smitty’s shoes I’d fire him then either

This is the first offseason where it would have made practical sense to fire MM and you know what, thats exactly what happened. Yes we did hold on too long but honestly it wasn’t as obvious as we like to believe that MM should’ve been fired probably the end of 2010.

by RANewton on Jan 15, 2012 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

I seem to remember that, despite going 13-3

I spent a lot of 2010 complaining about first down runs, uncreative passing routes, failures to throw the ball deep, and the lack of utilization of screen passes. We were a middle of the road offense in 2010, and we had many of the same weapons: an all-pro WR, a pro-bowl TE, a pro bowl RB, pro-bowl FB, and a good young QB who had just been to his first pro bowl.

We had ALL of that, and a middling offense. It’s hard for me to imagine what might hold you back from firing a coordinator-are you only allowed to do that when you’re in danger of losing season ticket holders?

Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.

Yes we had some complaints with him but we were the number 1 seed.

That means we won the most games in the NFC, The playoff game showed that our offense did have holes in but look at what you just listed out. We had 6 offensive players go to pro-bowl in 2010. If I look at that alongside a 13 win season I think acually our offense did pretty well that season. Hell even with MM we were still listed as superbowl contenders this year by a lot of the media. Look I’m no trying to say I didn’t want Mularky gone, we got no offensive point tagainst the giants and our offense was inconsistent this year. I’m as glad as the rest of you too be rid of him and his playcalling but I just think expecting to fire your OC after your best season with him just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I've been staring at this question for the past few minutes

my answer, I think, is yes (at least for me),

mainly because so many of their fans are bandwagon fans,
That 6 years after “the glorious return to the Superdome”, we still have to relive monthly reminders about why “this is why it’s Un-American to root against the Saints, and look how horrible the Falcons are”,
That the rarest thing seen when the Saints play is a game called cleanly,
That Sean Payton is immortalized for completely disrespecting that noblest of past times that has gathered us all here today in the Superbowl (I know some falcoholics disagree, but that’s my personal opinion of that play)
That Dan Marino’s record was broken by a team that ran up the score constantly.
That their HC is a Vicodin addict, but it was hushed up as soon as word got out.
That the OT win in NO last year was remembered not for a fluke ball bouncing off the foot of a Falcon going out of bounds, but for a missed field goal.

But mainly it’s the perpetual attitude of all of sports media (I know I shouldn’t care, but I’m human) that “New Orleans, particularly their offense, can do no wrong”, while at the same time there’s the “Falcons can’t throw the ball well enough to beat anybody, can’t run the ball well enough to beat anybody, and their defense is horrible”.

by falconnuke on Jan 15, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Give 'em their props nuke

they won the SB and that’s part of the reason I’m angry. They should never have won a SB before Atlanta. Atlanta was the city that both leagues fought over occupying.

by FrozenFinger on Jan 15, 2012 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

I'll give them some props

and yes, part of why I’m angry is that they won the SB before Atlanta.

And I’m angry that Peyton Manning is one of the 3 or 4 best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL (Brady is also right there), but due to differences in scheme, opponents, defense, and various other things, statistically is worse than Breesus. That Peyton Manning is one of the most selfless, charitable people in all of sports, but gets 1/100th the recognition. (Does Drew Brees have a children’s hospital named after him?)

But I guess so much of it comes back to the incessant positive (to say it moderately) treatment of the Media and NFL to that team, while it’s a rarity to get a mention of Atlanta, and when there is a mention of Atlanta it’s almost always discussing the various faults of the Falcons.

by falconnuke on Jan 15, 2012 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

That the OT win in NO last year was remembered not for a fluke ball bouncing off the foot of a Falcon going out of bounds, but for a missed field goal.

THIS!
I have to constantly remind people that it was a lucky bounce that let the saints even take the game to OT so our luck at the missed FG is just the world sorting itself out.

I am curious, whot do you think they did to disprespect the super bowl? Do you mean the onside kick?

by RANewton on Jan 15, 2012 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

The onside kick, yes

I’m spoiled by watching SEC football, but I truly feel that football is about whether your offense can beat the other team’s offense (particularly in the trenches), and whether your defense can give their offense a whippin’. The onside kick was, imo, recognition of the fact that Peyton Manning was reading the NO defense like a kid’s picture book, and turning it into his own little playground.

When I watch the superbowl, I want to see two great defenses go up against two great offenses, not what happened in that superbowl.

And yes, if it had been UT or Atlanta doing that, I would’ve been upset with it, too. It wasn’t a great call, it wasn’t a genius call, it was the kind of horse manure call that you see in MAC of WAC or Big East football.

Like what?

Your oppinion on the hiring?

by Bigru3 on Jan 15, 2012 11:40 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah by some of the same people on this thread questionig the hiring

but honestly I did write that this hiring might be it for me. Watching the Niners beat the Saints was good (Saints lost) to “Why aren’t we doing that?” This season we scored 39 points against the Saints. In two games against that defense.

Im honestly at a loss for words when it comes to my thoughts on it...

Just shaking my head. I know we have yet to see the product but his track history isnt pretty and from research hes uber conservative. I cant watch the small ball anymore.

These made me feel better.

It links to this interview:

Where DK (DONKEY KONG) says:

It’s the perfect formula for an explosive play. It’s not like you’re in 2×2 and you’re throwing quick outs to the outside and stick routes to the inside. You might complete that concept 67 percent of the time, but you’re only getting six yard plays. However, you may complete four verticals 48 percent of the time but you’re getting 18 yard gains, those are the kinds of plays I like better. I don’t like to work hard for four yard gains.interview/#ixzz1jXuavU17

I’m really bad with these caption/quote/link things, so sorry if it didn’t work.

He seems aggressive.

I see more ints in our future.

If it comes with more touchdowns

I might be able to live with that.

what?

seriously what? The major complaint we had with MM was he was to run first, too conservative and now your complainging about the hiring of someone who wants to be more aggressive?

by RANewton on Jan 15, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

The main, more serious complaint about Mike Mularkey is that he’s uncreative and not at all deceptive. His run plays weren’t creative, they were vanilla, he didn’t run draws or screens, and his passing schemes were ridiculously simple. We threw the ball a lot, actually, but for 6 yard gains.

But yeah, I won’t be upset with a more aggressive play caller, even if it gets us burned, a bit.

Braves will be fine. I'm not worried.

I'll give the poster his opinion

but these are billion dollar businesses. You hire the best and our question is Dirty Dirk the best? Well we don’t know the criteria that the Falcons used to make the hire. But….observational data indicates that this isn’t the guy. Of course he could have been crying out for better players and been overruled by JDR. Which then leaves him in the unknowned category and this team should be past the unknown.

That second article was very good

I like his aggressive attitude. He also seems a lot more accessible than Mularkey

DKs gotta be think...man did I get these suckers.

Moving on up..he finally got a piece of the pie. Watch todays halftime report and all the analyst will say the falcons hired who? Who is that?

by Bigru3 on Jan 15, 2012 11:57 AM EST via mobile reply actions

You know you raise a point here....or as my HS coach would say "pernt"

Back when Jerry Glanville was hired Bill Walsh was on NBC (which then was the AFC home) and he said "You should always hire an offensive guy for a young QB (Chris) you can always find a guy to coach the defense. This is a league of high powered offense. The rules favor the passing game.

Your coach that is. “perent” haha
