Your Dream Coordinator Team
It's a discussion post. Anything that starts with the word "your" usually is. That's a handy tip from The Falcoholic.
After the simply incredible Niners-Saints game—that ending was one of the best I've ever seen in a playoff game—it seems like today would be a good day to take it easy, at least until this afternoon's slate of games. So let's just have a basic discussion about coordinators.
If you could hire any available offensive coordinator and any available defensive coordinator, who would they be? We've talked this over plenty, but I'm asking you to pick one of each now and defend your choice. Let's stoke the fires of a great debate.
Check back later for live thread action, too.

Id roll with Spags
And anybody from the Shotty/Billick/Clements litter. As much as fans don’t want Shotty, dude ran a pretty open offense in NY, just had to be watered down to fit Sanchez.

We don't have to continue to settle Atlanta. We're better than that.

Spags and Clements
Those are my favs over who we could pick from.
Read a thread that Dirk Koetter might be a choice I say
the Falcons need to get over this love affair with JAx.
Clements OC and Spags DC
We also need a new QB coach and part of me would love to have Bartkowski coaching Ryan
Dream QB coach
Manning? IF he retired now.
Dont cloud the issue with facts!
Dream Scenerio-Billick and Spags with Clements as QB coach (lol)
Billick- an offensive guru with a great past. Plus he and Mike Smith are Brothers In Law and have worked together before so there will be good Chemistry between the two.
Spagnuolo- Lead the aggressive 2007 N.Y Giants defense, and as we all know they knocked off the seemingly unstopable Patriots. Gets the most out of any Defense no matter how much talent that Defense has.
Clements- Doubt he would leave GB just to take another QB job elsewhere, lol. But, seeing the success of the QBs he has coached (Farve, Rodgers, and even Matt Flynn!), its kinda scary to think how much he could develop Matt Ryan and make him even better then he already is.
The Falcons have the talent on the roster, we just need the coaches to utilize that talent to the greatest extent. These two coordinaters combined could very well give the Falcons their best shot ever to win the Lombardi Trophy. If Clements miraculously comes to Atlanta for the QB job, I think we would finally be able to officially put Matt Ryan in the Elite QBs column without debate.
Just to add on
I also wouldn’t mind Clements being our OC either
My two Guys are
Hue Jackson and Steve Spaqnoulo. We need Spags and his Over Aggressive playcalling you see what happened to the saints when facing an unafraid defense (49ers held them to just over 20 points) I really would love to see him with that falcons Logo on his Polo. I want Hue because he turned those Raiders receivers into playmakers in 1 Season, that’s incredible seeing as how a few were reaching “Bust” Status. Long story short he is creative and that’s what we need.

Just over 30 points

The Saints over aggressiveness cost them the game
if they hadn’t blitzed Alex Smith and kept more men in coverage, that pass to VD might have been stopped.
needless to say that
We need Spags and his Over Aggressive playcalling you see what happened to the saints when facing an unafraid defense
His lowly Rams handed aints a loss in a very similar fashion.
Atlanta Falcons fan in Moscow, Russia
Steve Spagnuolo DC; Brian Bilick OC
My two choices for coordinators (above). For QB coach-anybody that Bilick likes and who will help Matt Ryan take the next step. (He has got to settle down in playoff and other big games).

Saints' DC Gregg Williams is expected to join Fisher in STL
They’re going to be in need of a DC if that’s true, we need to be super aggressive and make sure they don’t end up with Spags.
We're not going after Spags I don't believe
This is Smitty’s defense

I’ll take Billick and Spags. Seems like a coaching dream team there. Clements is right up there, though.

ESPN Just said that we hired
Dirk Koeter as our OC PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS FALSE?!?!?!?!?
by falcons101 on Jan 15, 2012 10:31 AM EST via iPhone app reply actions
Saw that too
I’ll have to do some reading up I suppose….. but given how dominate Jax was on the ground (given that everyone knew they couldn’t pass anyway) this makes a lot of sense. Not to mention that obvious connection that Smith has there.
by ErrantFalcon on Jan 15, 2012 10:35 AM EST up reply actions
So what your saying is
It’s almost like we got another Mularkey. I hope these are false only because we can’t afford to be taking chances on guys that aren’t Proven. Another thing…Why do we seem so infatuated with the Jaguars?? They weren’t a great team so why are we after so many of their peices?

Bring in Del Rio
Hell bring in David Garrard, lets become JAX north. jeebus!

It wouldn't surprise me if Del Ro gets the DC gig
The hiring of Koetter is definitely Smitty’s doing. Back to Mularkeyball.
Since this is obviously a Smitty hire
If our offense doesn’t improve in the playoffs this year, Smith needs to be fired.
I agree and it's understandable from his P.O.V.

Dominant on the ground means squat...less than squat
not even able to open Squat’s mal. Did anyone at Flowery Branch watch playoff games. Koetter calling plays against Sean Payton? In this league, at this time you have to throw the damned ball. No, I’m not going to “give him a chance” Why? We’ve seen this movie. So much for the angry press conference. Every coach gets fired but nobody was on Koeter, like nobody was on Mularkey or BVG. Oh how mighty is the genius of the Atlanta Falcons.

Dominant on the ground means squat?
Someone should mention that to San Fran and Baltimore……
by ErrantFalcon on Jan 15, 2012 10:50 AM EST up reply actions
MT was the third leading rusher in the NFL
Did SF and BAL have that? The Falcons have those defenses? I’m not trying to tell you how to think am I? Well no FrozenFinger you’re not. There, happy?

This may be Goodbye
Koetter? He just had one of the worst offenses of the last five seasons and he comes to Atlanta. Why would you attempt to recreate JAXs coaching staff. This has to be Mike Smith’s work and he should go.
While not angry while writing this I’ve just had enough of Falcon missteps. 46 seasons..enough is enough.
A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.
enough is enough?
46 seasons worth of missteps and this is the one that does it for you? I could think of dozens of other Falcons missteps that would have been much better jumping off points…..

All got our own path brother
but it was almost when Blank hired Dan Reeves. As a real fan and STH you always think that “they’ll get it right this time” But it just keeps going and going and…. Blank said all of the right things and you really thought …

I'm just curious man
I mean, you were a fan through the entire 2007 season, right?

Let me tell you something
2007 was a picnic, Disney World, sleeping with Angelina Jolie, in comparison to some awful Falcon seasons. 2007 started with hope!

Wow.
Please, by all means, go become a Saints fan since they are so much better right now. Maybe when they start losing more and we begin to dominate the conference you’ll decide you haven’t really had enough.
See ya. Can’t say your comments are enjoyable anyways.
not sure where this animosity for FrozenFinger is coming from
I for one have enjoyed almost all of his comments.
And there’s some understandable exasperation at the “wtf???” rumored hiring of Koetter.
Dude last week everybody was off the hook with anger, right?
I kept saying that Mularkey wouldn’t be fired and now I think maybe he wouldn’t have been. Why aren’t you guys looking more to “where is this thing going?” Not that you aren’t but mediocre can become a habit. The Falcons say all of the right things and then….
What have you seen of JAXs efforts that would make you think he’s the guy for Atlanta?

Then if you're happy with this hiring you must think that
being a Saints fan is a good thing. I don’t and I’ve ben a fan since longer than you’ve probably been alive.

I remember thinking "Who the hell is Mike Smith?"
Well, he turned out to be the guy who took a joke of a franchise and turn it into a winning program. He’s been here three years and he’s already the best coach the Falcons have ever had.
So if he wants Koetter, I’m going to wait and see how the guy does, and not burn my Fan Card.
There's starving kids in Africa, eat your Asparagas
We’re not supposed to be as bad as we’ve been before. Because we were horrible for so many seasons doensn’t mean that you don’t look to be the best dude. Everybody gets on here last week trashing Mularkey and now today the guy that JAX didn’t even interview for Mularkey’s job is our OC? MM kept Mel Tucker… The only job you heard Koetter was linked to was Atlanta. Like it or not Hawes that says something man.

Koetter was heavily linked to other jobs, try Google.
by ErrantFalcon on Jan 15, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions
Why are you arguing with me about my own opinion
I’m not trying to change your mind am I? Heavily linked means what? I’m not looking at frigging Google! I’ve seen the JAGS play, Google that! You act like the Falcons have this magic wand and all the season needs is Falcon pixie dust.

Frozen, it's not even noon
it’s too early to be angry about anything
Good riddance to you then.
Because you’re a fairweather moron.
Go cheer for the Packers or something.
Spaggs and Hue Jackson....
but please God, not Dirk Koetter!!
Hue Jackson? Really?
I don’t get it…. he was running the Raiders further into the ground. THE RAIDERS. How do you even get further into the ground with them? Why would anyone want to bring that level of dysfunction anywhere?
by ErrantFalcon on Jan 15, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions
You can't work without tools....
Jackson has done a pretty good job, considering he was saddled with Tom Cable…TOM CABLE, for God’s sake (not to mention Al Davis)! Raiders still went 8-8 in 2010. This year, as head coach, he lost his QB early, then his #1 RB, then got a QB in the middle of the season that had not played in almost a year and that had to learn a new offense in two weeks. STILL went 8-8.
Hell he might have even done a good job when he was with us before if Vick hadn’t fell in the sewer and Petrino hadn’t left town in the dark of night!
I don’t call that dysfunction, I call that doing pretty well with what you have to work with.
Perhaps.....
Still not sure how well someone like Hue would mesh with Smith and Dimitroff.
by ErrantFalcon on Jan 15, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions
You might be right....
Hue seems to be a head-strong guy.
But if we really did hire Koetter, we may not have to worry about Smitty OR the Comrade after next season.
I could see Phillips
Although converting to a 3-4 would be a multi season process…..

I wonder where Spags will end up
Obviously I hope we go get him, but I haven’t really heard much about any interviews we’ve done for DCs. Plus, the Eagles apparently want him back as well…..
I made a comment the other day about lack of news on interviews...
apparently Falcons management are big on video conferencing their interviews. Spags would absolutely be my choice, but there is a lot of speculation about his going the Eagles. Just wish Falcons would let us know if they are even trying.
