Pro Football Weekly: Brent Grimes To Leave In Free Agency
This lends further credence to my feeling that Grimey won't be back in 2012, though it's far from a definitive report. Make of it what you will.

Damn that sux...
Wish him the best…really liked him as a player and person. Good luck Grimes

Too much
I like Grimey, but he’s too good. We’ve got too much money wrapped up in Dunta. We can’t afford to spend big dollars on two CBs. Additionally, if the Falcons do bring in a DC that does more press coverage, that’s going to fit DR’s skillset much better than Grimes. Likewise, with both Dominique Franks and Darrin Walls being over 6’ – they’ll fit press coverage better than a smaller Grimes would.
I’d love to have him back, but I think he’s going to follow the money (as he should).
Miko might be pricing him out of our range
Like the guy, think he is a good corner, but we won’t be able to afford him. And if we do change schemes to more of a press scheme, Grimes might not be as successful. Best of luck to him though if he does move on. He will certainly be missed.

Sounds about right
Look what happened to the Jets and Eagles, who spent too much money on CB, neither team made the playoffs.
Better spent on locking up Lofton, and signing a Guard (and possibly LT). Franks performed well down the stretch in his absence, has the size and speed to be our #2. We may finally see pre-knee injury Dunta next year which would be fantastic.
yeah, spending top dollar on a corner not named Deon or Champ is a fool’s game.

Here's my thoughts
After reading this, my heart kinda dropped…then I read the article. From the way they wrote it, it sounds like Grimes made the decision not to play, not the coaches. It’s the playoffs dude, step up!!! If we get a man to man coordinator, Dunta will thrive and Grimes couldn’t play that anyways. Oh and I CAN’T WAIT to see what his arrogant wife has to say about this…she acts like the 16 year old girl in high school that everyone hated cause she never shut her damn mouth!!

I’d never even heard of her until last week, but a quick google search and a few minutes of research showed some pretty crazy stuff. Any criticism she receives on the internet was brought on by her own actions.

I think
the Falcons want to move towards bigger more physical corners and we all know Grimes does not fit that mold. He’ll be missed to a certain degree but it’s a business go get your money but understand the pressure that comes with it. You think your little hot in the a$$ wife ignant(yea I said ignant) now, go somewhere and take that big contract and get ran over by a few RB’s and catch the fans wrath.
Damn why so angry?! Lol you need a hug a role model or something..
Grimes has always been a stand up guy and player…his wife is his wife. Dont see what she has to do with him being a free agent or the fact that our FO doesnt want to resign him.

he never said he wanted to leave…our FO doesnt wanna sign him. I understand why and I also understand why he wants to leave…he wants to get paid like you and me and every other person who works in,this country. You got people talkin wreckless about how ignant his wife is…check yourself you sound foolish yourself. What did dude say? Gettin run over by rbs and feelin the wrath of fans? All grimes ever did was shut down whatever wr was in front of him…last I checked that was his job and he did it well and without a big contract. Do you blame the guy for wanting to get paid…she probably reads of the things you goofballs write and thats probably why she said that.

I Dont Think Falcons
Have that bad of a fan base, I got a few real fans on twitter lolol, but they do have fairweather fans who only support team when they winning. Me im 19 been a fan since 04 mv7 was first player i seen play and i liked em cause were both lefties lol and ive stuck with them since, havent seen that bad that some of you guys have but 4-12 was rough so was 7-9 since we stated like 6-2 that year. Ill always be a falcon fan all the way from canada try and come see a game next year, and my fav falcon ever is warrick dunn classy dude
I think the thing with the Falcons
is that not only are a number of people in the ATL area _ fans first, Falcons fans second (moved to the south for various reasons), but the fanbase as a whole is far more geographically diverse. Just on this forum there are fans from Connecticut, Canada, Russia, Knoxville, and Japan.
Actually
She said that because she feels we don’t
a) attend enough games
b) complain too much about the team — she thinks we shouldn’t complain at all.
The thing, in my opinion, that is ignorant about that statement is that this is sports. How does she think the NY media will treat their team if they don’t play well? It’s almost as if she thinks that he is only criticized in ATL… but won’t be anywhere else if he doesn’t play well.
For example, she thinks YOU are a “weak ass fan” because in her opinion, you should just shut up and support the team…
Thing is, I (and I think many on this board) have been fans about as long as she has been alive…
and it’s sports. Half of the fun is being critical on of your team.
By the way
I’m not trying to be snarky to anyone.
Just repeating how I read her tweets.
(I just reread my post and it did seem a bit snarky)
well...
I cant watch in person as I am in Cali but I do see a TON of empty seats in the Dome. And crowd noise? When there isnt a difference in crowd noise between when we are on O and D, well, the noise aint there. I have never seen a shaky TV picture based on stadium noise rocking the cameras in the Dome.
I dont want Grimes to go, but if he wants to go, good luck man, you played some amazing ball here. And for people getting onto his wife for saying her opinion yet blindly defending Roddy for posting his, double standards dont do well. Just saying. And I dont know how many times I have read on here were people were blasting Grimes over and over yet all he did was perform.
Dont cloud the issue with facts!
I went to the SF game in 2010
when SF sucked, and the Dome had plenty of people in it and was plenty loud. Don’t let what you see on TV fool you.

Not only that
But even by the statistics sited by Rob Parker, we aren’t even close to being “the worse” in attendance.
In fact, if I recall correctly, we are middle of the pack… better than his NYG and the Lions (by percentage).
Plenty loud
When my ears hurt for three days after a game, unfortunately a 357 made the right one more sensitive. I do believe the Arizona playoff was a tad louder though, as was Green Bay last year. So if I show up I get to complain.
When's the last time a game was blacked out?
Maybe the Dark Ages in 2007? The Dome fills up every time I’ve been there, though not always at kickoff. I don’t think you can really eviscerate a fan base for tardiness, since a lot of folks are lugging in like 15 kids and whatnot. Not to mention if you pay the money for tix, you can show up whenever it entertains you to do so.

I have and because I rushed things, I ended up having 2 ACL reconstructions as well as a 3rd surgery to debride the ACL and cut out some more of the miniscus. Doctors know more than coaches and the person knows what his/her knee is capable of doing more than anyone else.

You know, he can possibly be a top 5 slot receiver. Remember all the late game comebacks he had this year and last year when MM actually put him in, here’s a few, San Fran, Saints, Ravens, Helped Us put Saints in OT this year, etc.

So it’s not a shock. His wife continuously talks shit about Falcon fans…
So it’s probably for the best. I get the feeling he feels that way too, he just doesn’t want to say it. (and she has hinted at as much).
I like him as a player and he will be missed. But at the same time, I like to see what the young’ns will do… and I really don’t mind being free of his wife. She is a mess.

I have respect for him not saying stuff
And I really don’t mind his wife having an opinion.
But she probably should tone it down. If you (grimes) aren’t happy with atl, play your contract and leave. That is what I think he has done, and I respect him for it.
She just took it too far
She obviously loves her husband, but damn. I really hope he goes to somewhere like Philly (I realize he obviously won’t go there) and one bad play wil result in her getting destroyed on Twotter. She’ll see how good we actually are.

Got to be honest with ya.
I could careless what Grimes wife says. I support the team, and always will regarding any and all decisions. I get frustrated ,overjoyed, angry but each and every year I bleed black and Red. I’ve seen 100’s of corners play, and I’m sure I’ll see 100 more. We as fans, as well as players want the same thing, a championship. I know Mr Blank will do whatever it takes to break through on his wishes. Couldn’t ask for a better situation than an owner who’s desire to win, will not be stopped.
Coaching wins championships!
Exactly...
This is why atlanta fans get a bad rap. http://www.m.worldstarhiphop.com/video.php?v=wshhRh9a6MS9bwMLRuj8
by Bigru3 on Jan 13, 2012 6:16 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah that was pretty freaking ignorant
Mad or no.
But there is one thing that I will say:
We would get a better fan base if the team consistently started winning. I feel like teams that have the “loyal” fan bases also have a history of winning big games… a history we don’t have yet.
It’s cliche that football is a business. Well, if it’s a business, then how do you expect consumers (fans) to buy a crappy product (like 24 -2 to the giants in the first round)?
If atlanta teams put a more quality product on the field and court, I think you would see the fan bases grow and become stable.
Another thing: was he just being funny? I thought at one point he couldn’t be that serious…
Yea he was a hotmess..drunk too.
It still reflects poorly.
by Bigru3 on Jan 13, 2012 6:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Saints fans actually wore bags over their heads at games right?
I think some people think that the fans in Atl are the only ones that have complaints. If your losing it doesn’t matter where you are at. The fans are gonna sound off about it. What pisses me off is when some person tries to define what a “loyal fan” is after the team loses and people are upset. If I spend my money on season tickets and suites let me feel how I wanna feel about a devastating loss. Now of course within reason. No need to embarrass yourself LOL.
Grimes
Big changes are gonna happen. He may not go anywhere. He is probably going to ask for way too much money for TD to handle. Dunta is 57 million right?
We have to fix the line. We can’t have Brees sitting back there for 5-8 seconds and picking us apart. NO ONE CAN DEFEND THAT LONG!

No loyalty these days
If it’s true that Grimes wants to leave because we don’t offer him anything that’s one thing. But if we wanted him to stay and he wants to go on to different things… well that’s a shame. Remember, Grimes was nothing several years ago. A project from NFL Europe, dude routinely got burnt over here. He finally turns things around over the past couple of years and decides he’s hot shit. But these are the type of things that happen when the wife wears the pants. Next thing you know he’ll be hyphenating his last name to include Miko’s last name.

News flash
If she thinks “We’re so called Falcons fans,” Take that gig anywhere else and expect the same complaints, or passion depending on your feelings. Fans are the same everywhere unless your from New England where most fans couldn’t name more then 4 players.
Coaching wins championships!
Doesnt bother me.
This will help us more than hinder us. If we are going switch to a more aggressive style of defense, then his importance will diminish significantly. He’s a below average tackler and gets beat at the line of scrimmage by most receivers in the league. Dunta is marginally better in both of these aspects. I am not downplaying Grimes’ ability, but he suddenly becomes replaceable if we do switch schemes. Not to mention, the big money we would be paying him can now go towards other needs. Grimes was a standout player on an average defense. I’d rather have a standout defense with average players.

Good luck to Grimes.
I hope Falcons work out a deal with Grimes if the new Co-ordinator wants him. Franks has been good but he gave up two big plays against the Giants. Franks gave up 2 TDs against the giants and 1 TD against the saints along with an interception against Saints. Franks is young and hopefully he can turnaround like Chris Owens did in last few games.

grimes
He was fun to watch and made some great hustle plays. But if his asking price is gonna be high, you just can’t wrap up too much money in him (a CB) with all of the other needs out there.
Grimes isn’t a shut-down corner. Are there even half a dozen of those left in the league? Even one or two? You just need above average ones. I’m much more interested in paying big money to pass rushers and other positions.

Exactly.
Besides, I think that whatever TD and Smitty see on tape when they review each player’s performance will have more weight to whether we keep Grimes for his asking price or not than relatively trivial stuff like missing a game due to injury, especially when Grimes has generally been pretty durable in the past.

Some of these posts may seem a bit harsh. It’s ultimately not our decision to resign him. It’s the teams direction, and number of free agents they have on Defense. If Grimes is asking for the sky, I don’t expect him to be back. There in nothing we can do about it. You have to give Grimes some credit
He’s our best corner, and he’s a guy who went undrafted out of Shippensburg, worked his way up through NFL Europa onto our practice squad. He capitalized on every opportunity he was given, and steadily improved his play. The guy is a hard-worker, and our whole team has been helped because we’ve been underpaying him the last few years.
Does that mean we’ll resign him? No one knows. Until we have a DC who can review our personnel and decide how much ($) we’d like to have him back, there’s no way to know. This is standard contract year stuff; remember Stephen Nicholas pining like a 14 year old girl about the Detroit Lions defense? This is just part of the business, y’all.

That's fair.
Still think we are better with him then without. He was ranked 2nd in eliminating big plays of all CBs, the only way we get better is if we had #1. wish I could find that article to validate but it’s been a couple of weeks. Last year he led the league in PDs.

Can we delete this thread?
Miko and Debilah have been friends of this blog. Some of the only players family to reach out to fans and have open lines of communication with us. I’m ashamed of those who do not recognize the value in that. I am thankful for them and a bit surprised by their generosity. I was given tickets to the Vikings game by Miko and that has impressed me. Maybe if you folks would change your attitudes towards people you might make some unlikely friends.

Right but
not everyone knows that, nor have they had a positive experience with Miko.
Most of what everyone remembers is what she said about ATL fans, which includes all of us. And no matter which way you slice it, it’s still an insult, no matter how true it is or if it pertains to you or not.
So yeah, I could see where some fans might be have a bad taste in their mouth about certain things.
But you know, people like TheAreopagite are right. He’s busted his ass his whole career and deserves to get paid. He’s one of my favorite players and, personally, my line starts and stops with him. If he likes being here, then he should stay so long as we pay him what he’s worth. If some other team pays him more and he goes, then best of luck to him. I have nothing but fond memories of him.
It’s gonna eventually get to that point, guys. We may not be able to retain everyone that becomes a free agent and then we’ll start losing players, some of which we like. Best get used to it. It’s a byproduct of being reasonably good.

She actually said those comments weren't towards "real fans".

I don't know about what "everyone remembers"
but I don’t know anything about what she said about falcons fans. It’s her opinion and many other atlanta fans talk about other atlanta fans. As far as I know this blog has never been about ragging on players families, and to me people on here are still bitter about Grimes’ situation and are taking it out on someone who has nothing to do with it.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday

If he goes I will sorely miss him
He’s one of my favourite players and a top CB in the league so if he goes I don’t see it making us better. I think his athleticism more than makes up for his height but some of these people may actually know more than me about his man coverage skills. That said I do understand that he may not be the best fit for us in a more agressive scheme and I do not think he should be our top priority this off season, maybe 2nd-4th but I do belive Lofton should be top, Simply because he’s our defensive leader and we do not have anyone who could come in and take his place.
