Falcons Coordinator Rumors Include Brian Billick, Mel Tucker, And So Forth
NFL.com's Jason La Canfora drops off a load of coordinator candidates. Did anyone realize the 2011 Jaguars coaching staff was this in-demand? I did not.
Brian Billick has seemed like a possible consideration for a couple years now. Always feel like he enjoys calling Falcons games.

Billick would be the OC

Idk about shotty
Clements would be my first choice but we will see what happens.
by pierre02 on Jan 12, 2012 3:03 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Clements isn't a bad option either
I just don’t know as much about him other than his work with Rogers and Flynn.
Why would he leave Green Bay?
And I’m not sure I’d want a guy the yer after his son passed away. Mickey Andrews didn’t seem to have his head in the game the season after his son passed. Could’ve been because he knew it was his last year though.

Ah! My b, yo!
Let’s go for him!

I like dude from GB.
Billick hasn’t done it in 10yrs. And the Jags dude, really. Shotty has a sh!tty track record. This is the pits.

Yeah I think Billick likes the Falcons weapons and wants to use them
I think that comes through in his broadcasts. He is high on Snelling’s skill set and would use him a lot more than currently. I don’t think it’s because he’s just Smitty’s bro-in-law either. He genuinely likes the pieces we have in place. He is a sharp sharp dude too. I think he’d be an excellent play caller. I know he’s been out of the league for a while, but it’s not like he doesn’t study the game still in his current jobs.
Billick has been offered other HC jobs btw...he's just turned them down
So it’s not like he isn’t in demand still in the league…he just wants to pick his shot if he gets back in. It would also fit the mold of a coordinator that could take the HC job reigns if something goes haywire. He’s probably the smartest of the coordinators mentioned that have been in the league.
My only concern is his relation to Smith though
I understand that you should always put business and this sort of thing before family and as they said in the press conference, loyalty should overrule ability but I worry that if Billick doesn’t work Smith may not find it easy to get rid of him
Trust
If Billick were to become the OC and he did not work out it would not be up to Smitty as to whether he stays or goes. If we have learned anything from the recent press conference Authur Blank is in control and he is prepared to clean all houses.
Yeah good point
Like I said that was my only doubt and even then I didn’t completely hate the idea, probably my 2nd choice after Clements
funny thought
imagine Mike Smith was fired and Billick replaced him as HC. How awkward would it be for them to eat dinner together during the holidays?

I don't think Smitty gets to make...
the call by himself on the coordinators (this was touched on by Dave, DW and a few others in the “Press Conference” thread). It will be a decision by committee I think (AB/TD/MS, together).
We shall see…
"I'd run over my own mother to win the Super Bowl." - Joe Jacoby, formerly of the Redskins
"To win, I'd run over Joe's mom too." - Matt Millen, formerly of the Raiders
"We now have exactly the same situation as we had at the start of the race, only exactly the opposite" - Murray Walker, Sportscaster
So...
What we really need is a coordinator coordinator?
GATA!

Sure, if you wanna look at it that way...

Love the idea of getting clements
if anyone can get the best out of Ice it shold be the guy who coached Rodgers. Just honestly don’t go anywhere near Schottenhiemer. Guy is a disatster waiting to happen, jets fan feel the exact same way about him we did about MM.
Uhh....
If someone was smart enough to hire MM, then I don’t think we can leave any options.
I’ll go ahead and call my great grandmother to put her resume in. Might as well consider her at this point.

I owe you an apology
Though I still don’t think he would have been fired (though after the confusing press conference who knows? Why so much anger and then let it continue this long?) but I was certain nobody would be foolish enough to hire MM. You were right and I…was wrong.

It's all good.
You win some, you lose some.
I was as surprised as anyone after that poor offensive performance but uh…..I guess they liked what they heard.

I wouldn't mind
Brian Billick, def. knows his stuff, and as was said previously he loves our weapons..
STAY AWAY FROM SHOTTY! DO NOT GO NEAR HIM! You think MM was bad? How about your RB is averaging 4.9+ yards a carry and you go and call for your QB to throw the ball 50 times.. that’s what shotty called when the jets played the giants..nope, don’t want him, AT ALL. stay away stay away.

My #1
would be Clements
followed by Billick
Stay away from Shotty. He’s a disaster, Jets fans, players, and everyone else hate him.
The Jags OC, you gotta be kidding me.
on the defensive side
Mel Tucker or Spags would be nice. You can be sure Blank will lean more towards guys with playoff success, at least on offense.
Which lends some credibility towards Clements and Billick.

Clements and Bowles
Would be my favorite coordinator combo.

Maybe
but he could be sour from not getting the HC job.

Dont they always say
Dont take a Demotion, if he can make a move to dc for another team he should, but he should not take a demotion from a bad team
"Derek Lowe's Contract Has Stopped Looking Like a Retard Got Lost in a Pen Factory.".......wait.....nevermind
I like the Billick idea. The only downside is I wouldn’t get to hear him call the games. Totally off-topic, but I just need a chance to say this somewhere: I don’t want to hear Buck and Aikman ever call another game, ever, anywhere.
But yeah, Billick interests me. All in all, I’m just glad to see they’re thinking big.
by ChardeeMacDennis on Jan 12, 2012 5:51 PM EST reply actions
Oh, and I don’t think that Billick would remotely consider a Coordinators job for any other team, so it might be quite a coup if he’d do it for us.
by ChardeeMacDennis on Jan 12, 2012 5:54 PM EST up reply actions
i doubt the Falcons will get Buck and Aikman all the time
The announcer rotation is dependent on the play by play guy, not the analyst.
So Thom Brennanmen would still call Falcons games, with a new announcer
From my experience, Joe Buck mostly will call NFC East games and Packers, if nothing else.
At the most we might get two regular season games with Joe Buck, and at least three with Brennamen.

I don't really have a preference
I just want guys who are top notch NFL proven and that have had success. Billick has experience and got credit for winning a Superbowl. I realize the impact that D had. He was considered some type on offensive guru as a coordinator, didn’t really see the guru in him as a HC. I think he would be a good OC. Spags has experience and has a Superbowl as a DC of the Giants. I believe you should always try to surround yourself with an experienced knowledgeable staff whenever possible so Billick and Spags would be good choices. If you look at the Bratkowski hiring, a guy who has 10 yrs of experience as OC. Has had top 10 ranked offenses and 2 Div championships, he’s almost over qualified for the QB coach position. When they hired him a just got the feeling he was the heir apparent… for no other reason than Mularkey’s name coming up as a potential future HC somewhere. Can we attribute the fact that Matt Ryan exceeded just about all of his personal statistical goals to the presence of Bob Bratkowski?
I want to hear about an interview!!!!
I’m glad our coordinators are gone and I know it’s been less than a week but damn it feels like an eternity!
by FLA_Falcon on Jan 12, 2012 6:25 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I agree.
I just want to hear something. I keep checking websites hoping for some insight, but am sorely disappointed every time. Yes, it’s only been a few days, but the brain trust has known for some time (second saints game most likely) so should have a short list ready and should’ve been on the phone on Monday for a DC and Tuesday for an OC. Hopefully, we’ll begin to hear something soon.

could be a possibility.

Was Billick productive after he left Minn?
Obviously I’m talking about yards and points, not rings. He just reminds me a lot of MM, ie his best years are in the past.
Perilously close to a 2007 style depression.

He literally had no weapons on offense...
Trent Dilfer was his qb and aside from him had bum qbs and Derrick Mason who had a really good career oh and Mcnair in the twilight of his career. Besides that he had Jamal Lewis who rushed for 2000 yds one year. I think being a analyst actually helps these guys. It gives them years of observation and perspective. Think about how many games hes called and how many different teams hes watched. Hes also spending lots of time with former players and former coaches breaking down plays. His iq couldve only went up and hes already a smart guy. I think hes just what we need. He also formed some really strong olines in both Minnesota and Baltimore. I just hope he can also inspire these guys to play at a higher level. Same goes for def
