Crazy Idea . What about converting Meiers to a TE
Just a thought that has been nagging me the last few days. It has been a need to have a pass catching TE for when Gonzo hangs up his cleats for good. I mean our back ups are better at blocking and we badly need a good pass catching TE . Your thoughts on it since I think he is kind of lost in our receiving corp. He has the size and good hands so think would be nice in house possibilty.

He's not quite big enough
He’s only 6’2" and listed as 220. He would be a very small TE and would constantly get jammed at the line by linebackers and defensive ends.
We need a prototypical TE – someone that is at least 6’4" and around 240.
Not a good idea
There’s much much more to playing tightend than route running, and catching passes. A tightend is more like a hybrid offensive tackle, with a mixture of fullback and wide reciever, there’s just too much wide reciever in him.
I like the idea in principle
But as DW and mr have mentioned, very tough in execution.

How big is Baker?
He sucks at pass blocking. If we have to pay him anyway, ………………………….

Why it was a thought.
But I think a prototypical TE is not what we want either. The position is evolving from the big guy that can block and occassionally catch passes as a safty valve
There's a new prototype TE
thanks to guys like Gresham and Gronkowski.

on another note
I hate looking at combine numbers. because I feel like I got the short (pun intended) end of the stick in height, and couldn’t keep on weight in season.

I am not sure it matters.
TE or WR is just a depth chart thing. Look at the TEs for the Patriots. They run the ball. Does that mean they need to be changed to RB on the depth chart? Not really. If Meiers can do the job does it matter if he is listed as a WR or a TE?
