"We were not as opportunistic as we needed to be"

Dimitroff just nailed it. Missed tackles, a lack of turnovers, missed sacks, missed blocks…this Falcons team too often missed out on its opportunities.

Passion needed, Dimitroff argues

Clearly some players/coaches who didn’t perform at the level/intensity level the Falcons wanted.

Blank gives another vote of confidence to Smitty and Dimitroff

But says won’t cross the line between loyalty and performance. They’re sticking around for 2012, at minimum, but that’s a shot across the bow to the entire organization.

You will see veterans cut. You will see new coordinators. You will see a football team that doesn’t make so many little mistakes, or you will see more guys getting cut and fired at the end next season. The warm and fuzzy period is over.

Dimitroff said out of 17 free agents that basically 8 are the focus.

Abe, Lofton, Grimes, Walker, Peterson, Douglas, Decoud and Sanders would be my 8. Sam Baker is clearly the sacrificial cow they referred to. Displeasure with the O-line says McClure probably wont be back since he is the leader. Had a chance to lock up Snelling last season be did not so he’s gone. Sid can clearly do for this team what Biermann does probably even better. No need for Hayden now with Franks getting go minutes at the end of the season and playing fairly well. The rest of the free agent list falls under the who cares category

by Kushion on Jan 11, 2012 1:08 PM EST reply actions

No weems

There are like 8-9 different WRs in the draft that are better at WR and KR than Weems. We could get a better option by drafting a UFA or have HD return them. He needs the ball in his hands more often.

by pierre02 on Jan 11, 2012 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

I mention Weems

only because Smitty just called him out in the press conference along with Ryan and Spoon as significant contributors this season. Pretty nice company to be in for a guy like Weems IMO. Maybe you missed it.

by Kushion on Jan 11, 2012 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

I question this.

Not that it was said, just it’s basis in reality. IMO, Weems was bloody awful this season. He cost us games, especially early on.

Perilously close to a 2007 style depression.

by VaderX5 on Jan 11, 2012 9:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Still a no

Weems isn’t dynamic at all. I don’t see why we are using a roster spot when HD is as good as Weems on ST and a far superior WR.

With the talk of being unhappy with vet play

I would definitely put trading Roddy in the realm of possibilities. Alot of teams are in need of receiving help, and he could bring back nice picks to restore our draft. He’s 30 and will be turning 31 next year. It might just be time to pull that trigger.

It'd be interesting to know if TD differs from Bellichick on that front

We know they disagreed on the Julio Jones trade. Bellichick traded Seymour in his prime rather than get a few more good years and then be stuck with the decline. I wonder if TD agrees with that approach or would rather have the steady veteran on board and deal with the decline.

Personally, I want Roddy to stick around if he can actually hold on to the football.

I was thinking the same thing and we have...

good depth and talent at LB. That and with RW we could get some picks back, although not the first rounder we need unless we offer a package to someone.

But for how long does he remain a weapon?

Nobody is discrediting what he’s done, but more of questioning what he’ll do. Continuing to trash talk opponents when he himself drops crucial passes is what makes me think he’s drawing ire. And you have to figure the decline will be soon.

Do I want Roddy to be traded? No. I love the guy, despite his flaws.

But it’s not impossible, and if it could get the Falcons back into the first round, they’d probably do it. Sign Robert Meachem to play opposite Jones, bring back Douglas, let some of the young guys develop and you’ve got yourself a receiving corps.

You're probably right about that

Question becomes if that’s enough. I think it depends on how you’re going to fill out the depth chart.

Again, it’s not something I particularly want to see. If the Falcons felt they could make the football team better by doing it, I imagine they would.

It could make the team better in the long run, but there is no doubt it would mean a step back in 2012.

That raises a question

I think this roster is good enough to contend again in 2012, but it involves rolling the dice on a few veterans again. If you have to take a step back to make the team better in 2013 and beyond, can/would you do it?

I don’t think it’ll happen, but it’s an interesting question.

Depends on your goals

The message I heard from Blank is that he wants ringS – not a single ring. If that’s the case, you have to think outside the 2012 season.

Would losing Roddy be painful? Definitely, but if you could get something significant for him that could bolster the franchise for the next 8 years, I think you’d have to consider it.

Are we tryin to win a championship or re-build?

Trading Roddy would be great if we were rebuilding but were not…we are a win now team. Roddy had 100 grabs 1300 yds or whatever his stats are. How do you replace that. Not to mention draft picks bust all the time. Bellicheck told TD not to do it but look at how many picks the Pats had and almost all of them busted. All those picks for Seymore busted and now their def sucks. The pick for Moss busted and now they have no deep threat

Send a message to the team.

RW cost us atleast 3 games this year with crucial drops. Its one or two plays a game which might decide a game. Couple that with Penalties which killed the drives, He should go. I am loving this come time to renew my season tickets.

It's all about Process...

by Vishnu_falcon on Jan 11, 2012 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

I dont mind sending a message but not at that expense. Hes a stud and after Smitty had a talk with him...

He stopped most of the drops and stupid penalties and returned to form.

by Bigru3 on Jan 11, 2012 2:17 PM EST via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

Falcons need to have multiple weapons.

RW puts up big numbers because he is targeted a lot. Falcons rather have 2 or 3 receivers who can have 800 yards than single receiver who goes for 1200 yards. It will make it harder for defense to take a single receiver away. Going back to same old plays is not going to win playoff games. I like the idea of signing Robert Meacham and even Doucet from Arizona for depth. At this point if RW can get a first round its worth it, second round is too low to pull the trigger.

It's all about Process...

by Vishnu_falcon on Jan 11, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

not sure if that's in jest

But yeah… if Roddy had caught more than 5 of his 12 Targets, maybe the Offense could’ve put up a number >0. Corey Webster really shut him down.

He's in the probowl as an alternate because Megatron can't be arsed to play

I guess you can call that ‘making’ the probowl but its kind of a hollow achievement considering the probowl has become a laughing stock. Honestly I love Roddy and wan him to stay but you have to admit he had a pretty mistake riddled season in 2011

C'mon son R we really ready to throw RW under this bus

after 1 out of 4 seasons of great outstanding hook ups with Matt down the field, plus behind an offseason that consisted of Big Mac passes down the throat and milkshake jukes up the middle!!not to mention RW stats shows that he belongs in the PB despite the most drops he still had top 5 stats. Has the acquisition of JJ really spoiled us to the point that we don’t realize if julio has another hamstring injury we’re stuck w/ HD(which is a free agent) and a S**T load of rookie’s and benchwarmers. R we really ready to put our whole passing game in JJ’s hand? I think not I will bet hard core cash that Roddy doesnt get traded, atleast this season

Oh don't get me wrong I want Roddy to stay

I even said that in my last last comment. I’m not saying it is entirely RW’s fault we lost those 6 games and did appalling against the Giants. Like you say a lot of that blame falls on MM. I also still consider Roddy a top 5 wideout in the league the problem is if he obvious talent and skill makes up for the problems he brings. He dropped lot of passes this year and also drew a lot of penalties however I’m willing to kind of give him a slight pass this season due to the lack of offseason. I think Roddy needs motivation to practive during the off months, without coaches and someone like Tony G he just kind of doesn’t do much. Thats not a good work ethic to have but its not normally gonna be a problem and definately not until after he’s retired again. Or thats what I think happened this season anyway.

No, I definitely don't get paid either

Actually, I’m not sure what we’re arguing about (or having a friendly back-and-forth). I’ll clarify my position, because I think we pretty much agree on Roddy:

1) He is the team’s clear WR1
2) He’s been one of the league’s best WR’s since 2007
3) He should still has several Pro Bowl quality seasons left in him
4) I would NOT want the team to trade him

All I meant when I said that above (and Dave maybe said it better) was that there were TONS of reasons we lost to the Giants, and Roddy was part of the problem in the game.

Both

The two are not mutually exclusive. You can try to rebuild while also winning championships. If trading RW would ruin our championship hopes, then the franchise has much larger issues.

by The DW on Jan 11, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Roddy White

Is inconsistent at times.
Isn’t that what we are trying to build away from.
Dumping Roddy wouldn’t mean rebuilding necessarily, but for adding more pieces to the puzzle by getting rid of dead weight.

by brotherbrown on Jan 12, 2012 2:51 AM EST up reply actions

Trading White while we bring in a new OC

is pure fail. Ryan to White is almost a guarantee and there is not one draft choice we are going to get that will have the impact that White will have next year or the next two years.

went after Carl Nicks in free agency and plug that beast in at RG. I know LT is a greater need but the Saints are definitely gonna lose that animal to free agency.

That’s not an exaggeration. If I had to chip in $100 of my own money to help them get him, I’d do it.

a lot of good Coordinators don’t go anywhere after the playoffs. Not because they’re not desired, but because other teams pull the trigger and hire before they fulfill their commitments to their current teams.

Truth will be in the middle.

Falcons might not have had the talent fans think is on the roster. MM might have better talent than what he thinks. Looking at other teams I doubt if have any other elite weapons on offense other than JJ who is still upcoming player. The receivers from other teams make their QB look so much better with YAC and holding on to balls in traffic.

Believe it or not,

he might not be entirely off base. I think, while he was in Pitt, he had former QB and super athlete Randle El at his disposal. I remember a few Randle El TD passes.

He had Randle El for two seasons. Also had Kordell Stewart (just learned his nickname was Slash) for two seasons. Had Jerome Bettis also.

OK so

Jerome Bettis = Michael Turner plus I don’t remember Bettis being involved in any “special plays”
Randle El was a speedster but he never scored over 3 TD in any season with MM nor did he ever have over 600 yards in any season so Randle El was not what I consider a difference maker. Yea he had a trick play here and there.

Stats

You guys and stats! Yes they play a part in evaluations. AB said it today and he’s right.
MR was ONLY sacked 2 times Sunday but how often was he rushed and hit in the pocket?
We finished 6 th in the league in sacks this yr. GREAT! But big deal! Did MR have time to truly let plays develop, HELL NO!
AB called out the Oline today. So stats aren’t everything. RW cost us big time with dropped passes! Julio in TX cost us.
AB and Smitty both see that this year they were nOt on fire and focused!

by Sbaron55 on Jan 11, 2012 8:15 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Counterpoint

There are stats available for pressures, quarterback hits and the like that provide a much more complete picture, one that says the Falcons didn’t do a great job of protecting Ryan.

Stats do tell a big part of the story, but it requires more than cherry picking one stat. Blank was half right, half wrong on that count.

Oline

I thought I was crazy this yr. I thought I was the only one who saw our weakass Oline this year. Mm sucked at play calling but yeeeeeee gods Turner had no holes to run thru most of the time.
Again I will say it! Watch the films of the Pats, GB, NO, the QB’s have plenty of time to go thru all the looks they need till the WR gets open!!!

by Sbaron55 on Jan 11, 2012 8:21 PM EST via mobile reply actions

great, but...

Blank is certainly first class and it is clear he cares and wants to win, not an owner who looks at this team as just part of his collection of wealth or someone with an ego so big that he cannot look honestly at what he and this team have failed to do to get to the elite level.

They’re right that we’re a good team, not great. I at least feel that the top of this organization is committed to getting and staying at that level.

The “but” is because talk is nice, but now I want to see it happen. I don’t expect this team to be king of the hill next year, but on par and able to compete with the top teams in the league.

It’ll be interesting to see how this team looks in a few months. I can see, and wouldn’t be surprised to see this team less Turner, White, Biermann, and Sam Baker at a minimum and can’t wait to see what these coordinators are going to bring.

Its like 2nd Christmas!!! No coal please!

by mln on Jan 11, 2012 9:18 PM EST reply actions

Am I the only one?

I’m quite satisfied with the talent on our team – other than the O-line of course. Compare our defensive and offensive talent with teams around the league and we compare favorably to most. Safety is solid if we can keep Moore healthy and Sanders over DeCoud. CB – Grimes needs to stay and Dunta gets more shit than he deserves. He’s a bump and run corner, and we knew that when we signed him, yet he’s been stuck in soft-zone hell the past few years. He’s fine. Hopefully Franks and Owens continue to develop, and you can always add a veteran in FA. LB’s? I’ll take Lofton, Spoon and Nicholas over most trios in the league. Abe, Babs, Peters and Edwards underperformed for sure, but I think (read: “hope”) they underachieved. Throw in Biermann, Sidbury, Jerry for depth, along with MoPete and I while I can imagine an All Pro team, reality is that we’ve got some good talent.

On offense, few teams compare to our skill position talent – Ryan, Turner, TG, HD, JJ, RW, and J’izz – I mean, really? Our O-line sucks donkey balls for sure, so let’s focus on that, retain the top FA’s and find coordinators who’ll get the most out of the talent they’ll have to work with, rather than the two that left how UNDER-utilized our amount of talent. Maybe I’m crazy, maybe I’m delusional, maybe I’m the only one, but effin-ay, I can’t help but feel like we GROSSLY underachieved on BOTH sides of the ball given the talent present on this roster. I think the right coordinators push us over the edge. Getting those right coordinators is the biggest question mark for me right now.

by HotLunch4You on Jan 11, 2012 9:45 PM EST reply actions

I think most people tend to agree with you

TD has done a fine job assembling a team that has championship-level talent all over the field. The only thing I worry about is if our players have that mental makeup to make plays in big games and especially in the postseason and live up to their talent even when things aren’t going as planned.

by orion12 on Jan 11, 2012 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

Never enough talent

Every team gets better every season. A team can always become more talented. The problem is if you don’t have the coaches to maximize the talent your basically wasting it.

by pierre02 on Jan 11, 2012 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Agree.

I know you can never have enough talent. My biggest point was that other than our O-line, we have plenty of it right now, and it was the failure to maximize our talent that was our problem, not a lack of it talent overall. It sounds like they may be targeting FA’s with winning playoff experience, which too can only help. Realistically, it’s probably going to take another year or two for everything to come together and for this franchise to finally shake off the last bit of loser crust that’d accumulated over it over the years. lol

by HotLunch4You on Jan 12, 2012 8:59 AM EST up reply actions

um

there’s still the fact that the only guy that get’s 9+ sacks a year is a free agent. And don’t have a lot of int, fumble, or sack makers besides JA55

I know he hustles and is a good ST player but if your main contribution to the team is ST in your 4th year you should be cut.

I came away from the press conference

feeling pretty good. I really enjoyed how Blanks makes it known that he is owns the team and TD and Smith answer to him. Blanks does not have to say it, you can just feel it. TD also seemed very stout in his position / philosophy in moving the team forward talent wise. Smitty accepted blame for the playoff / big game debacles (which is a good thing) and seams to understand that putting up good numbers is not OK going forward. I was getting really tiered of Smiths same old press conference quotes and I really needed him to accept the blame for poor / embarrassing performances in big games and he did that today.
