Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

There's no guarantee they'll get him, but it's encouraging to see the Falcons pursuing such a well-regarded coordinator. They'll be competing directly with the Eagles for his services.

University of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is also reportedly in the mix. Stay tuned for more.

Is Kirby Smart not wanting to leave Bama.

He’d be the first guy I’d go get if I was TD. They play the most sound Defense in college ball.

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Jan 11, 2012 9:50 AM EST via mobile reply actions

The big question on Smart,

is how much of that defense he really controls. I heard them saying on the broadcast the other night that when they were watching Alabama practice, Saban told McElwain to handle the offense and never took his eyes off the defense. The common thought is that Smart has a hand in the defense, but it’s still Saban’s baby.

Kirby Smart

isn’t going anywhere. Although, having him run our defense would be AMAZING! Hell, I’d take he and Saban right now and dump Smith in a second! Fortunately, I’m a huge Tide fan so they coach one of my teams! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

by mattyice10 on Jan 11, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

are you forgetting Saban got hired into the NFL and then bailed out on them like pigtrino did us? I’ve heard that when AL plays AR they have state troopers on each sideline to make sure the coaches don’t try to change teams at the half….

no thanks to ANY college people. this is the NFL, more often than not, college coaches don’t do all that well in the NFL. I know, some do, but when you’ve got someone like saban who’s already proven he don’t wanna coach in the NFL why waste time trying.

Hoping we could get Spags. if not, i’d like to see Mike Nolan.

I won't hold my breath, but...

Please God, yes. He would make Dunta worthwhile.

by widderslainte on Jan 11, 2012 9:56 AM EST reply actions

I hope he comes here, but I'm guessing he's already halfway back to Philadelphia now

I’m not liking the idea of getting a college defensive coordinator though.

by HaterSlayer on Jan 11, 2012 10:11 AM EST reply actions

Have you seen Bama's defense.

they’ve been like that for years now.

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Jan 11, 2012 10:17 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

No kidding...

Heck, half the Bama guys are NFL-caliber anyway.

If we’re going to go the 3-4 route, why not hire Smart? I’m only ticked at the idea of Grantham for I want him at UGA.

What clues

have you gotten that the Falcons are moving to a 3-4 defense. Mike Smith said in his interview this team has obviously drafted as a 4-3 team so what gives you the indications? Just curious I realize some of us WANT a 3-4 defense simply because we see other teams successful using it but why are we stuck on it being used in Atl. Did I miss an interview or sometihng?

by Kushion on Jan 11, 2012 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

Zero clues

I think we bring in a 4-3 guy.

by Jman781 on Jan 11, 2012 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Well, if Grantham is a frontrunner they must be coinsidering a switch

I can’t imagine them bringing a guy in who has made his name as a 3-4 guy and telling him to run a 4-3

by leonw92 on Jan 11, 2012 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Grantham?

Who said Grantham was a frontrunner? Seriously I have not read or heard that Grantham was the frontrunner. Or even a frontrunner for that matter. In the mix…yes. Frontrunner…no. BTW every DC available is probably in the mix.

by Kushion on Jan 11, 2012 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

Grantham?

Does that mean a potential switch to the 3-4 and a negation of the Ray Edwards signing?

Ha...

Tempting, but I’d rather have Grantham :-)

I don’t see the Falcons angering a large part of its fanbase by poaching the UGA’s D.C. I realize not every Falcon fan is a Dawg fan, but many, many are.

I'm not sure about any College Coordinators

To be honest. College doesn’t always translate well.

Give me Spags any day of the week.

Pay that man!

by KEScottII on Jan 11, 2012 10:29 AM EST reply actions

Grantham was defensive assistant with the Cowboys before he was at Georgia

When Saban took the job with the Dolphins, he wanted Grantham as his coordinator (they had worked together before); instead, Grantham took a job coordinating the Browns. Neither decision worked out well, but he’s got the NFL chops.

Agreed!!!

Leave the college guys in college. We have had enough of this on the job training so to speak. Lets get proven leadership.

by Kushion on Jan 11, 2012 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

No College guys please.

Falcons need a creative nfl coordinator who can help win playoff games. I hope Spags comes here.

It's all about Process...

Yea dude im,with you on,that

I hate when people speculate and just throw crazy names out there when the guy hasnt proven anything at the pro level and another is hes not even available. Like “what the hell are you talking about?” The transition from college to pros doesnt always work. Hell Nick Saben just want a title yet he sucked as a pro coach.

by Bigru3 on Jan 11, 2012 12:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Could you imagine

What spags might have done with this defense this year?

I think a lot of this roster was made perfectly for his system.

Also, I don’t think he goes to Philly, which seems to be the common thought. They have made a switch to a wide nine… and unless they are willing to scrap that experiment, he wouldn’t be a fit.

by KEScottII on Jan 11, 2012 10:47 AM EST reply actions

Probably won't happen

Hes probably already got a Vick jersey on and is eating a cheese steak…I highly doubt we get him.

by dirtybirds233 on Jan 11, 2012 11:04 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Question though

Has Juan Castillo yet been removed from his DC responsibilities? I’ve not seen anything yet that indicates he is a goner.

by The DW on Jan 11, 2012 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

No he hasn't been

But I’m pretty sure Reid took over the defensive duties towards the end of the season. And if Spags were willing to sign, he would be fired in a heart beat.

by dirtybirds233 on Jan 11, 2012 11:26 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Falcons would “love” to land ex-Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator.
Spags is expected to meet with Andy Reid within a week. If the Eagles end up keeping Juan Castillo, though, Atlanta could move to the front of the line. The Falcons have also been tangentially connected to Jack Del Rio, Mike Nolan, and Raheem Morris.

is it me or am i missing something?

If I was on oc or dc looking at our roster I’d jump at the chance to coach here. We have great talent and don’t have the same bs drama these other teams do. Seems like we should have a pick of who we want

No big news at all. Just “we are looking at things, and we’ll get back to you”

Something does tell me, however, that they might have been close to making a big splash… and it just didn’t happen.

by KEScottII on Jan 11, 2012 12:27 PM EST reply actions

Mike Smith is looking in the opposite direction the entire time.

You get the impression Smitty could sit in an empty room for hours just playing with a ball of string.

Spagnoulo and Todd Haley

Our previous coordinators played not to loose, ala soft zones and keeping the other qb of the field, with these two guys we’d get so agressive and they bring out the best in players sid would turn into a stud, and with haley we might have 3 thousand yrd wrs like he did in zona

by Nedk23 on Jan 11, 2012 12:54 PM EST reply actions

There's a lot of talent there on defense

Swap out bad coaching for good, and you look like a freaking genius (ex., 2011 49ers)

by TheAreopagite on Jan 11, 2012 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

As oppose to here?

They’re the opposite of us. They have good DEs and CBs. But we get them on everything else IMO. If anything it’s a toss up. But I hear you mr92687. It’s an organization with a better history than Atlanta.

Todd Haley at OC and Spags at DC

The very thought of that makes me very excited about our future!

God I hope it happens

Sorry, but no.

The University of Georgia has problems with getting their current OC off the job already, they don’t need their DC to be gone. Grantham’s the strength of the team, because he steps up at any time to tell the players what they need to hear and isn’t scared to yell it in their ears. Grantham should stay at UGA.

This is an interesting dynamic to me

Because I’m not a Georgia native or big college football guy. if Grantham’s an improvement, I’d love to have him.

But..

Georgia has now experienced the benefits of a 3-4 defense just now, this past year. It took an entire year for their defense to adjust to a 3-4 system because they went 6-7 that year. This past college football year, they have gotten used to the system and they’ve gone 10-4.

If Grantham leaves, then his whole work the first year is wasted, because UGA is less likely to have the benefits next year that they’ve experienced this year, especially because more big-name recruits are coming to UGA because Grantham’s there, and also because the new DC will be completely new. Why do big-name recruits come to UGA more than ever now? Because Grantham has NFL experience, and knows it. All who play D for Grantham will have a step up because they will be at least somewhat familiar with the NFL.

That's very true

Again, the only reason I say that is because I have no attachment to Georgia college football. That allows me to say that selfishly.

He’s still not my first choice.

Im with you Dave...

I love college football Notre Dame personally but when it comes to college football who cares lol National titles are insanely hard to win and the last I checked Georgia University hasnt won one in I cant remember how long if ever. If the guy feels he can help a pro team and has a good shot at winning the super bowl then then he should take that over playing over the Cotton Bowl. Isnt a super bowl the ultimate goal anyhow?

by Bigru3 on Jan 11, 2012 8:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Georgia last one a National Championship in 1980.

That’s not really far off. Little over 30 years ago, and UGA almost won Natl’ Championships in 1981 and 1982. Besides, Grantham is now in extension talks with UGA, because what he’s built up so far is already showing its muscles at UGA and he doesn’t need to go somewhere where he’ll need to start all over again.
