Week 17 Early Games Open Thread
The Falcons' fate in the playoffs could be determined by the time their game starts.
The games to watch here? That'd be Packers-Lions, Saints-Panthers and Cowboys-Giants. Why, you ask? Simple.
- If the Lions beat the Packers, the Falcons are the 6th seed, no matter what they do against the Buccaneers.
- Seeing the Panthers beat the Saints would be delightful.
- The winner of Cowboys-Giants could be facing the Falcons, if the Lions lose and Atlanta wins.
So watch those games, discuss them here and gear up for the Falcons game at 4:15 p.m. Enjoy!

...torn
… I know that ATL would be hungry if they had to go back to New Orleans next week after they ran up the score on us last week…so I won’t be too upset if we get the #6 seed…BUT
…seeing the inconsistent play of both Dallas and New York makes me think we’ve got a lot better shot of going to either one of those places and coming out w/ the dubya…
so… @ 1 pm… go…Packers? (hurts to say that…)
I agree with you but, it's not going to happen.

Agreed
Helmet to helmet is one penalty, defenseless receiver is another. Gruden’s point was that if the hit by Lofton was on a defenseless receiver, so was Jenkin’s. I would have no problem if the rule was helmet to helmet, although Lofton did not lead with his helmet which sets up a separate debate…

No it isn't
You are allowed to hit helmet to helmet. You are also allowed to hit a defenseless player. But you’re not allowed to hit a defenceless player helmet to helmet. That’s what Lofton did. It was a penalty, can people not just get over it.
They are not 2 distinct penalties
The penalty was for hitting a defenceless receiver with a helmet to the helmet. Obviously the referee didn’t explain it well enough, but it was a penalty.
You are allowed to tackle and hit a defenceless player. That is not a penalty. It’s about the way you hit them. Lofton did it illegally, hence why he was penalised and has now been fined with the benefit of video evidence. When the former rules chief says its a penalty don’t you think it might be time to accept that it was a penalty.
It was a penalty. No one has said differently.
We did say we are a bit confused by what constitutes a defenseless receiver.
Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence.

by armchair quarterback on Jan 1, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions
A player who doesn't have a chance to make an act common to the game
Eg run, change direction, juke. Both Colston and Kelly were defenceless. But only Colston was hit illegally.
Ok, if you accept that premise
what about this play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvRKHy0QWZE
Because I see a receiver who catches the ball, takes two steps, and turns upfield. That’s multiple acts “common to the game”, but the ruling on the field required a defenseless receiver.
I didn't say that call was correct
I said that both the Kelly and Jenkins calls were correct. That call was acknowledged as borderline, but because of Robinson’s history with the Eagles he was fined. Officials are told to err on the side of player safety anyway.
This is my thing, though
The NFL is so inconsistent with its application of rules that even if those particular calls are correct (I don’t, but that’s just me), you can pick out two plays that are almost identical that get opposite calls, fined, etc.
And as far as “erring on the side of player safety”, well it’s already been seen by anyone who follows the nfl that which side to err on depends on who’s playing.
The biggest example is players drawing fines on plays that weren't penalized
It means officials are either missing the plays during the games, or they didn’t think the play warranted a penalty. If a hit warrants a fine, it should definitely warrant a penalty IMO.

exactly
and if an action warrants a penalty by the Titans or the Falcons or the Browns or the Raiders, it warrants a penalty by any other team as well.
I don't think the NFL has favourites
The Falcons were the least penalised team in the league last year, remember. Is it more likely that the NFL decided to hate us overnight or that the team got sloppy and lost discipline due to the lockout?
yeah right
I have not seen a hit across the middle of the field this year that didn’t result in a defenseless receiver penalty. Lofton’s was not helmet to helmet…..I mean really many people saw the replay and have said the same thing. The call was not correct for Lofton and wasn’t called for Kelly.
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
your'e also not allowed to lower your head
use it as a battering ram, or otherwise attempt to spear the defender, regardless of defenseless status or not.
The hit on Reggie Kelly I saw a saints player see Kelly attempt to catch the ball, lower his head, and spear him in the lower back, a play that could leave Kelly paralyzed for life.
Malcolm Jenkins lead with his shoulder
Take your Falcons glasses of and go and watch the plays again objectively.
And Lofton didn't lead with his head
Jenkins helmet made contact with Kelly’s back just as much as Lofton’s helmet did Colston’s
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
Think what you want
It’s not my problem if you refuse to be objective. How about trying to actually understand the rules instead of complaining about them?
Jenkin's hit was a foul
according to the rules……according to Mike Piereira
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/mike-pereira-jon-gruden-monday-night-football-helmet-to-helmet-penalty-atlanta-falcons-new-orleans-saints-122811
He also contridicted himself!!!
Atlanta will win a championship....someday
According to Rich McKay, shoulder to helmet on a defenseless receiver is also acceptable
“It used to say he was somebody who had not completed the act of the catch,” explained competition committee co-chairman Rich McKay, president of the Atlanta Falcons. "Now it will give a receiver protection until he becomes a runner and has the opportunity to defend himself.
“We saw too many helmet-to-helmet or shoulder-to-helmet hits where the receiver has just caught the ball and has two feet on the ground and has not had a chance to protect himself.”

"He has lived up to the legendary billing... And the legend is born in Calvin Johnson!" -Wes Durham
by sportsfan4life2012 on Jan 1, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions
That's not relevant
Because Jenkins didn’t hit shoulder to helmet. He hit shoulder to back. Pereira said himself that the Jenkins hit was textbook, the way the NFL is trying to teach players to hit. You can debate whether that’s right if you want, but it remains a fact that it was a perfectly legal hit.
That was in reference to your statement that hitting a defenseless receiver is la penalty on helmet to helmet
A shoulder to helmet hit is just as illegal as a helmet to helmet hit. From my understanding of what I am seeing, anything that is a hit on a defenseless receiver to his head is a penalty. Is this your understanding as well? And my problem with Pereira is his lack of maturity as an analyst. I want to hear why Gruden was wrong, not hear him called a blowhard and state he doesn’t understand the rules, a concept that clearly many people are struggling with.
"He has lived up to the legendary billing... And the legend is born in Calvin Johnson!" -Wes Durham
by sportsfan4life2012 on Jan 1, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions
Yes that's my understanding
But as I stated before I don’t understand how that’s relevant to either the Kelly or Colston hits. I personally love Pereira, but that’s probably because I live in the UK where officials have no accountability and don’t ever explain any of their decisions. To have an actual rules analyst is unprecedented. As well as that, I actually agree with what he said about Gruden.
It was relevant in helping me understand what the rule is
I’m trying to understand the rules better, and be as objective as possible. I guess I would have preferred if the official stated it was a helmet to helmet on a defenseless receiver. Neither the officials, nor Pereira were very effective in explaining what the rule is, so I was using the board as an opportunity to discuss what the rule is

It's to be expected these days
I’m just wondering how obvious a penalty has to be before the refs will call it.
While we are on the topic of NFL discipline, does anyone think the fines are getting ridiculous?
Marshawn Lynch gets 10K for having skittles on his shoes, while the late hit ending the season of Russell Okung got 7.5k? Lofton, who I don’t believe has a history of bad tackles, gets 15K for his shot. Who decides the price of the fines and what makes them deserving?

I'm against him
only older guy I’d want is Turner but MM stays anyway.
A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.
Could see that
you’re right they had some excellent seasons in Cincy and Matt Ryan has really come around late this season.
MM is our coordinator
and he’s going nowhere.
A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.
Not buying it.
I think the team knows there’s a problem, but preaches stability so much, they’re above firing him midseason.
If someone doesn’t hire him, I don’t think he’ll be back. We need something different. The ire against MM will continually grow until he’s gone and he’s a head coaching commodity for some reason. I’ll probably be praying nightly for someone to take him away.

If he interviews somewhere
I could see a situation where he is “encouraged” to take the job. As a whole the fan base is sick of him and the offense has been far too inconsistent for anyone’s taste this year. There is no question the talent’s there. It’s time to become an elite unit
He's been offensive coordinator
on a coaching staff that turned things around dramatically. He’s had one interview and a lot of people know him. He goes nowhere. Smitty is in his corner.
A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.
The only problem
and this is something I mentioned in my MM post a few days ago is that a coaching change isn’t always for the better.
Because something different means risking what you had (which, admittedly, could be much better), you run the risk of it getting worse. I do think we’ll get better if we at least try someone else. We’ve still got plenty of years left in a lot of our players and I think we’re a perennial contender now. It’s all about ironing out the kinks at this point.

there's a difference between "kill 'em"
and being completely classless and running up the score.
Packers have a kill ‘em attitude, but when the outcome of the game is certain, they don’t try to pad stats and utterly humiliate the other team. The Saints disrespect the other team.
and I'm not just limiting this to the Saints and NFL
when Steve Spurrier does it, I have the same opinion. If the Tennessee Vols did it, i’d have the same opinion (unfortunately they’re not up by enough very often that it could be considered running up the score)

No
But winning is always preferable to losing. Call it meaningless if you want but I know I personally would be much happier than 1-1 than 0-1 in the playoffs. If you want to think that every season is meaningless unless you win the Superbowl then you’re welcome to it. You’re just going to be disappointed almost every year.
I'd rather get momentum in the playoffs.
I mean no matter how well they play against TB, we won’t feel good as a team. Now a great win against Dallas makes NO look a lot more possible.
Wouldn't be along the road until the conference championship with a 5th seed,
You’d be looking at NFC east winner/San Fran/ GB or NO or Det at home
