Ask Windy City Gridiron!

Happy Wednesday, kids. Steven Schweickert here, weekend contributor, mid-week previewer, and official waitstaff and lackey to the editorial staff(-er?) of Windy City Gridiron. Oh, and an editor, too. I guess that's important.

Bout time the football season starts, eh? You may have heard something about a game between the Falcons and my Bears, I'm hazy on the details.

Anyway, if you have any questions about the Bears, I'll be here the rest of the week (and maybe some of my WCG brethren will stop by too). Fire away!

Please tell us about your *new* O-line

And there chances of stopping J. Abraham and R. Edwards.

by Dirtybirdz90 on Sep 7, 2011 9:33 AM EDT reply actions

At least a better chance of being a pothole as opposed to a speed bump.

The O-line had a pretty good preseason if you’re willing to disregard that Buffalo disaster, but apart from the preseason version of Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul, there really wasn’t much in the way of big-name rushers.

I’m pretty worried about both of ‘em, but Frank Omi-Ole isn’t starting anymore for us so I guess that’s a tackle improvement…?

Right. Your question. Sorry, I tend to ramble.

There’s chances of stopping them, but there’s chances of me winning the lotto and starting on the first line for the Blackhawks too, and I don’t see those happening. If the O-line contains them to two or three sacks combined, I think we’d take that as a victory for the line.

So, how do you foresee Chicago’s secondary matching up against Atlanta’s receiving corps? Admittedly, I don’t know much about Chicago’s lineup in the defensive secondary.

by The DW on Sep 7, 2011 9:50 AM EDT reply actions

Well, Tillman will get the Roddy White matchup

and Tim Jennings will likely go against Julio Jones. Though I think no matter how it’s sliced, it’s advantage Falcons in that department. Ryan doesn’t let himself get picked, so the only other option I see for the Bears is to limit the yards per play, not let the Falcons get deep, and try to hold to field goals.

DJ Moore

and he’s pretty solid in that role, though really only that role. I could see Douglas giving him a fit or two though.

Moore

Is his speed a big concern if he’s covering Harry Douglas? I remember Moore having a slow 40 but wondering whether he plays faster or if his playing speed is truly a liability.

Seemed to get a ton of attention all over. Much ado about nothing, IMO, but I wonder how Bears fans viewed it – whether a good number agreed with the criticisms or thought that it was overblown.

There’s two things Briggs is good at – playing weakside linebacker and being a professional pain in the arse when it comes to his contract. And it’s not conducive for him to tank one to get the other – he should be playing like his normal self this year.

How does the Wide Receiver corp looking at the end of preseason

In all honesty I don’t think Johnny Knox gets enough credit. Its beyond me why Knox is riding pine to Former Dallas Cowboy and Professional Underachiever Roy Williams. Has Knox been that bad or Williams been that good in the preseason?

I think Williams got anointed solely for his one great season under Martz in Detroit.

Williams hasn’t exactly shown much but has stuck to his “I’ll turn it on in the season” mentality, with which Martz and Co. are apparently willing to foster his entitlement.

Knox’s problem is that most of Cutler’s interceptions came from him either not finishing a route or not attacking the ball – I recall that something like 11 or 12 of the 16 picks came on throws to Knox.

I honestly think Roy is a horrible WR

If you can’t go to Dallas, be given the #1 WR position, and not have close to a probowl year, almost every year, then you aint good enough to play in the NFL. I personally think the guy is trash and won’t do much of anything for you guys this year. I watched him quite a bit in Dallas, and he just could not get away from defenders at all. He doesn’t have the speed or strength to do it. Now, if he’s given a free release all the time, then he has good games, but other than that he can’t do it.
I respect the bears as a team for sure, but not Roy. I just think he’s way overrated. IMO

Now Gentlemen, get your butts up, and get back on that horse! You have no choice. The expectations are running much higher this year.

Normally I try to see the bright side of any roster move.

This one, the best I could manage is a “Huh?”

I mean, a receiver would’ve been helpful – we were talking about going after Sidney Rice, V-Jax, MSW… Then they pull out Roy Williams and Sam Hurd.

You guys mad about the Olsen trade?

I know he’s not an elite TE or anything, but I feel he’s at least better than Kellen Davis/Matt Spaeth. Davis seems to have potential, but Olsen would be good right now.

by TurnerTheBurner on Sep 7, 2011 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

He's got the tools to be an excellent receiving weapon

but with a coach that didn’t know how to use him in Ron Turner and now a coach that didn’t want to use him in Mike Martz, he was never going to realize his potential here. Davis will be fine, but Olsen was a solid weapon.

Honestly, sometimes I wish Martz wasn’t so rigid in wanting everything done his way with his players (Manumaleuseless, Todd Collins), but I like the concepts his offense brings.

Listening to the Pundits

It seems the “surprise” pick of the year for everyone (kind of negates it being a surprise) is the Detroit Lions. Everyone also appears to be selecting Green Bay to win the division. That said, it would seem that many people are picking the Bears to finish – at best – 3rd in the division, and likely not even to make it into the playoffs.

What are your thoughts on how the NFC North will shake out?

by The DW on Sep 7, 2011 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

I'd agree with Green Bay as the North frontrunners.

I think we can still be pencilled in for second in the division with a chance to take the division if the offensive line and receivers are any good. The Lions are an improved team, but I still have them more likely to finish third than second, not because they suck (not anymore) but because they still have some ground to make up and they took a four game win streak at the end of last year to hit six wins.

The Vikings, who knows. Don’t see it as good, though.

Is the Chicago fan base a fan of Mike Martz offensive philosophy?

And do they see it as the kind of thing that is going to develop and be successful eventually?

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

by MentallyMIA on Sep 7, 2011 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

Can't speak for others...

I’m a fan of the man’s offensive philosophy and working in more deep balls (especially after suffering through Turner, Shoop…), but I’m not a fan of the man’s insistence to have as much control over the players and personnel moves as he does. Like I said above, I think Martz is pretty much the reason we don’t have Olsen now. Martz also gave us Manumaleuseless and Todd Collins last season; so far this season has given us Nathan Enderle, Matt Spaeth, and to an extent Roy Williams (like the first two, not sure on Williams); and resulted in deactivating Dez Clark, probably the best all-around tight end on the roster last season, into obscurity.

It could be successful, and I don’t mind when a coach wants to acquire players that fit his scheme, but we just don’t have the necessary roster to run it the way he wants to run it, especially in the offensive line.

I don’t think it’ll impact his production; if he doesn’t extend here, he’ll be playing for a payday elsewhere.

This year it's Forte, Marion Barber and Kahlil Bell.

Barber’s supposed to fill the power/short yardage role Taylor never could, and Bell’s a continual project and special teams contributor who ran decently well this preseason. Plus he has somewhat of a cult following from dat one 72 yard run dat one time!

What are your thoughts on Julius Peppers?

He only had 8 sacks last year, which is solid, but unspectacular. The 2 interceptions helps, but one of them came against Carolina, so it really wasn’t a game-changing play. I know his presence also helped out your other DE (can’t remember his name off the top of my head), but does that kind of play warrant the 6-year, $90-something million contract he signed?

He’s a beast, no doubt, but is on the wrong side of 30, and is due for a decline at some point. We have Abraham, but with our rotation, he’s kept fresh for obvious passing downs.

by jgentry425 on Sep 7, 2011 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

You're thinking of Israel Idonije (Izzy).

Unequivocally, absolutely, yes. Peppers practically won Packers Round 1 by himself and he didn’t have a sack that game. The man brings so much in terms of pressure and intimidation that he’s making an impact nearly every play, whether it be through being doubled, forcing a penalty, or making a play himself. Course, you guys saw him twice a year, so you know that.

One of Izzy’s bigger problems was being shifted all over the line year in and year out; having settled in a spot might help him out, and we just drafted Stephen Paea with a second round pick. In fact, lots of emphasis this year was placed on taking advantage of the opportunities for sacks that Peppers makes by forcing single blocking on the others – see Okoye, Amobi and Melton, Henry. This year was also supposed to be a big year for Favreslayer (Corey Wootton) in a rotation role and/or taking Izzy’s spot completely, but being hampered, we’re carrying Nick Reed and UDFA Mario Addison – hopefully keeping Peppers and Izzy fresher gives more results in sacks and pressures for INTs.

Doing a great job getting to all these

Now to the field. It’s been criticized last season, before the preseason, during the preseason, and now there’s been some more rumbling about it. What gives? How has it been operating for the preseason games? Is it supposed to be ready to go this Sunday?

by KMarch on Sep 7, 2011 6:07 PM EDT reply actions

I think after the home finale

they went and replaced the whole thing. Not just resodded, but replaced the whole crappy turf. They (meaning the Park District) said the old turf had “too much clay content” in it – I’m no herbologist, and definitely not an expert in grass, so I have to take them at their word, though I have to question people whose sole purpose is to make sure grass grows when they said at the cancellation of Family Fest that the field wasn’t watered enough.

It’s been operating like normal turf – bad – but hopefully after the replacement it actually stays together.

How is the quality of your secondary?

I know that your D-Line and LB’s are quite scary, but I haven’t heard much about your DB’s and if they are any good. Though I’m guessing they are because from what I can remember you did quite admirally against the Packers passing game last season… right?

We're hard on the unit, and deservedly so...

Charles Tillman is the #1 CB whose strengths are in ball-punching, coverage and tackling, though he may be losing a step as he gets older.

Tim Jennings is the #2 currently, can man up, can play the ball pretty well, decent supporting against the run.

DJ Moore is the nickel and definitely best suited for that role. Other CBs currently include Zackary Bowman, who’s a ballhawk with size and started once upon a time, but inconsistency issues have kept him benched, and Corey Graham, who’s one of the best special teams gunners around. Josh Moore came to camp with a little extra muscle, but was waived upon the Meriweather signing.

At safety, it’s a bunch of heavy hitters – Chris Harris and Major Wright are the starters, with Brandon Meriweather likely to be the backup to Wright for this contest. Chris Conte and Craig Steltz are a little banged up and Winston Venable is a UDFA who the Bears are keeping as an inactive/developmental project.

But do you see him legitimately contesting a starting spot or are your Safteys fairly safe in that regard?

Well, Zack Bowman thought he was safe at CB2 last year; insert Tim Jennings against Green Bay.

Chris Harris is safe. The spot in question is Major Wright’s. Meriweather’ll contest for a starting spot, and I could see him taking it in a week or two; Wright didn’t look that great in preseason, and the Bears are paying Meriweather north of three million.

I highly doubt Meriweather starts on Sunday; then again, I didn’t think the Bears would end up waiving FB Will Ta’ufo’fu.

Late to the Party

But I did want to ask specifically about Carmini. Our GM said that if he didn’t move up for Julio Jones, then he would have likely selected Carmini considering the options on the board when our original selection came up. What’s his role? I’d assume RT, but does he also back up anywhere else? How has he looked in the preseason?

I know you’ve commented on him some, but it was more in terms of the entire OL. I was looking for more specifics on him…

by theatlfan on Sep 9, 2011 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

Carimi's the starting RT, and for right now, that's it.

He fits the mauler RT mold best, although he was fine as an LT all through college. He doesn’t back up anywhere else; Frank Omi-Ole! is the backup LT.

In preseason, he was probably the second-best O-lineman; former franchise LT Chris Williams really embraced his new LG role.
