A Case for Donnie Avery

Now I know stright off the bat that the chances for Donnie Avery to come to the Falcons are slim to none but as he is one of my favorite WR's I have to hope. So Avery was recently cut by the Rams after overloading themselves in the offseason (a foolish move in my opinion) due to this they had to let some players go, the biggest of these names was Donnie Avery. Now he has not been taken by a team as of yet however I doubt this will be the case. Avery is a solid WR with speed, decent hands and given a solid QB (something he has never had) he has the potential to be very good.

Now what does Avery bring to the Falcons that we could use? A couple things:

Star-divide

Additional Speed - we talked about becoming more explosive and if we add in another player who can make big plays then the more the merrier.

Another proven reciever - now as much as I believe Julio Jones will be an immediate impact and Harry Douglas will live up to his potential, neither of them have done this. And after we got rid of Jenkins for cap space we left ourselves with 2 of our 4 WR's from last year. Sure Roddy is amazing but if worse comes to worse I doubt he could carry the offense alone.

Untapped Potential - But wait Falcons have alot of this, true but Avery was a 50 reception, 600 yards a year player in his first 2 years and that was with an average passing game, where Steven Jackson was one of the only other tallented players. Before his injury he apparently had great chemistry with Bradford and high expectations, but he missed last season. HOWEVER before the injury concerns appear, note he was the Rams best reciever in the preseason and there are a couple reports about him returning to full speed.

Bang for our buck? - Being cut from the Rams roster was more of a numbers game rather then a tallent issue. However I assume due to being cut he could possibly sign on for a bit less then if he resigned to the Rams... maybe. Regardless he is a player who isnt going to cost a tonne and has alot of upside. We have a bit of cap room with our latest cuts and we could use that to grab him (obviously it would mean another player had to be cut).

So I am aware its a tough sell but I like Avery enough to make this difficult claim. Also I wasn't very impressed with Meier this preseason, maybe because I didn't hear anything about him but he is my 1 big question mark in our recievers. Also note that I believe JJ will be rookie of the year good and HD will improve alot but I made the point because its a possibility

He tore his ACL last year

Do you remember how much that affected Harry Douglas the year following?

Now, consider that and then consider pushing Weems or Meier off the roster for him.

It just doesn’t seem like a good idea to me.

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

Yea I know this is a very hard sell

And there are definitely more reasons against then for it, but they did say he looks close to 100% and he did perform in the preseason quite well considering. Remember some people (like Wes Welker) bounce back from injuries quite quickly

I'm a big Donnie Avery fan

So I would love to see this, but I kind of agree with MentallyMIA…I don’t know where he fits on the roster this season. If the team thinks they can carry him without losing someone valuable, then hell yes!

I'd move for him

However, in these situations, the top-tier wide receivers that are cut tend to go in situations where they’ll find more opportunities on the field. I can see him in San Diego, San Fransisco, Tennessee, Seattle, anywhere where they need a wide receiver before he comes to Atlanta. It’s a position of luxury so I don’t see us moving for him.

Is "I'd move for him"

kind of like, “”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwb9-OlQimc&ob=av2e" target="new">I’ll tumble for ya"?

The idea of Boy George makes me want to vomit

But the closet 80’s music fan inside of me makes me want to dance. That’s what you call a double whammy

Not Avery, but someone

I agree with MMIA about his injury, too risky. Buty I also agree with your point about the WR corps, we really don’t have any PROVEN WR’s after Roddy, maybe HD, but thats still a small sample size. The way I look at it, is this, what if we had an injury to RW or JJ, or even HD. Our group is talented but not deep on experience. I think the hardest injury would be of course if Roddy got hurt. Then JJ goes to #1, HD to #2, and Meier in the slot. See, no veteran WR on the field, and sometimes a veteran can outplay a more talented player opposite them just with wisdom alone. I could see us signing another veteran WR that got cut, but not one that has been injured recently, especially a torn ACL.

Now Gentlemen, get your butts up, and get back on that horse! You have no choice. The expectations are running much higher this year.

I don't think you can be going out looking for experience

When you’ve got Week 1 coming up. I love Avery, always had time for him, but I think you have to see how Jones and Meier come along this year. Also, MIA has said it ealier, recovering from an ACL takes a full season, now isn’t the time to be hotly pursuing an unecessary roster addition (especially considering some of our roster cuts….cough, Bear Woods, cough cough….)
