WK4: Fantasy Help from your Local Falcoholics

Hope everyone is good and enjoying fantasy dominance.

As always, if you submit a question be sure to include whether the league is PPR or not, the players and the matchups they'll be facing to save everyone time.

If you'll go ahead and rec this so we can keep it at the top that would be great.

Here's my current ordeal:  Rashard Mendenhall.  He's not performing well, mostly due to a horrible PIT Oline, but I just can't justify starting him until I see an improvement.  His only decent performance was against SEA, but that's only because he managed to score.  Would you start him against HOU?  They seem to have a porous run DEF, but it could be a shoot-out, which pretty much negates Mendy.

Whatchu got?

Week 3 Notes

-Got 8 points out of Rivers. That sucked.
-Gates is probably done, which sucks. I think I’m cursed at TE. Ever since I dropped Mercedes Lewis at the start of last season, I’ve rarely gotten even decent production out of the position regardless of who I start, and that list includes a HOF’ers and several talented players. He cursed he for my incompetence, and it has carried over into this season.

As for your question, I don’t know. I’m starting him, but I don’t really have a choice. My back-up is Deangelo Williams. If you have the option of starting someone else, you probably should. Unless, of course, that person is Deangelo Williams.

Questions:
Pick one:
Meachem vs Jacksonville
Green vs Buffalo
Rice vs. Atlanta
Colston is back, Green has a rookie throwing him the ball, and I don’t know if anyone’s noticed, but Grimes (assuming he mostly covers opponents’ #1 receiver) has quietly been shutting dudes down. standard settings.

Drop Gates now, or hope he comes around at the end of the season?

by Starrk on Sep 29, 2011 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

Pretty busy right now at the office, I'll be back for more later,

but had to say I haven’t dropped Gates and don’t plan to. he played injured last year, I’m convinced he will again this year when he gets well enough to go. I’m thinking 2 or 3 weeks from now he will be doing all he can to be out there.

by CubFan90 on Sep 29, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright,

Honestly, I’d think hard about sticking with AJ Green this week. Buffalo will score points, and probably a lot of them. Who else can Dalton really throw to (besides the Bills defenders)?

by CubFan90 on Sep 29, 2011 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Having same problem with Gates likely out

and I’m targeting Jermaine Gresham b/c I expect the Bengals to have to do a LOT of passing to keep up with BUF. So, Green probably is the safest out of those three.

by KMarch on Sep 29, 2011 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

No one

So they’ll just try to run it all day. Since Cincy has no one else to throw to, doesn’t that mean Green will be double-covered? This is tough; so far I have picked the wrong guy every week between Meachem and Green. Now that Rice is back, things are even more muddled.

by Starrk on Sep 29, 2011 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I have Rivers in like 3 of my 8 teams...

and he’s riding pine for a while!! Luckily I have Flacco on 2 of those teams and Matt Ryan in the other as my backups (which as far as I’m concerned Rivers just became the backup).

Yeah, I had Gates on 3 teams as well but I did really well at TE in all my leagues with back up selections

As to you 3 WR’s: Green is a rookie himself and Buffalo has been really good (so far); Jackson is completing his passes at a 60% clip; Brees is chucking it right now though and chucking it to everyone but with Colston being back Meachem will see his chances go down.

As far as dropping Gates, not if you have an IR slot, if not then tough call. If you have room on the bench keep him but if bye week’s start putting a cramp in your side and you need to pick up someone to start then you gotta let him slide off and hope he’s still around when your bench is more accommodating…

by Blood_Talon on Sep 29, 2011 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

My back-up is Culter

Do I chance starting him? I expect Rivers to bounce back pretty soon, but I want to win games in the meantime.

by Starrk on Sep 29, 2011 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

For the WR question

I’m a little confused. Who do you think I should go with again?

For the TE, I was able to get Fred Davis (dropped Zach Miller, who I drafter).

by Starrk on Sep 29, 2011 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I've got the same problem as u guys

I lost by 3 points last week thanks to his horrid showing. I have options, LT, Benson to name a couple. But as of now, I still have him in. If McCluster is still available in your league pick him up. Chances are he’s gonna get you average points but he has the ability to break a big one and if you’re in a league like mine that gives you long TD bonuses he’s worth a shot.

by aces666high on Sep 29, 2011 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

Wow I hold Colston and Hebderson in one league and Lance more in another.

What to do? My gut tells me Colston won’t be a huge contributor this week and Moore is a redzone threat. What say you?

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Sep 29, 2011 3:14 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Moore.

I have Moore in the lineup and now that he is healthy expect to see a TD or two. I hope he doesn’t though and Saints tank the season.

It's all about Process...

by Vishnu_falcon on Sep 29, 2011 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they try and get their running game going this week

it’s been pretty bad. JAX is a pretty tough DEF so far anyway.

by KMarch on Sep 29, 2011 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Who are your backup options at RB?

You’ve got to expect Mendenhall and that o-line figure it out at some point, but I don’t know if I like the matchup this week.

by CubFan90 on Sep 29, 2011 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

Well he's been my RB2 'starter'

but I only need two RBs and 1 RB/WR. But I’m thinking of going Peterson and Blount as RBs and either Branch, Mendy, Nate Washington, or Julio in as my flex.

by KMarch on Sep 29, 2011 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotcha.

In that case I’d be thinking stick with Mendenhall again. I keep telling myself he’s too good to keep getting shut down, offensive line or not. Then again, Branch is always good as long as Brady handles the snaps.

by CubFan90 on Sep 29, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Branch had a total of 3 targets last week against a banged up bills secondary, zero catches.

Mix that w/two solid performances before that and you have why FF is so damn maddening. Especially where pats are concerned.

by aces666high on Sep 29, 2011 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Unless you have Brady and Gronkowski.

Those two are slam dunks. Even with Bradys 4 ints last week I still got 27pts.

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Sep 30, 2011 3:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, those bastards are money!

Stay away from the RB’s tho. They’ll kill ya!

by aces666high on Sep 30, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm totally lost this week with my recievers in one league.

Dez Bryant (still hurt-ish, DET), Nate Washington (CLE), Lance Moore (JAC), Julio Jones (SEA), AJ Green (BUF), with 3 spots up for grabs.

If Bryant is healthy enough, he’s a definite starter. Nate Washington should get plenty of looks with no Britt (who I had until he blew his knee). Lance Moore has been surprisingly useful for NO, so I have no clue. Julio could be great again, or could be relatively useless again. AJ Green looks alright, but Dalton makes me hesitate.

I’m thinking Bryant (hopefully), Washington and Green, although Julio and Moore are very close.

Other league only has one question mark, Nate Washington vs. Mario Manningham (ARI). Thinking Mario finally plays and plays well here.

Both leagues standard non-PPR, thoughts?

by CubFan90 on Sep 29, 2011 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

I like that order

You other league, I’d go with Nate and give Mario another week to heal. I could see them bringing him back slowly. Plus, they could potentially get an early lead in that game and pound the run. I mean, AZ lost to SEA last week.

by KMarch on Sep 29, 2011 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I think I may have solved that WR problem in the other league.

Somehow Denarius Moore was still available. Raiders playing catch-up to the Patriots? I like it.

by CubFan90 on Sep 29, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Rivers or Romo?

Last week Rivers sucked, NYJ D sucked,Jason Witten didn’t do much and I lost a winning match up. I should have started Romo last week. Not sure who i should start this week at QB

It's all about Process...

by Vishnu_falcon on Sep 29, 2011 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

Romo vs. Lions

Rivers has struggled so far this season for some reason. Romo has looked very good (fantasy-wise), so I wouldn’t sit him in a game where they’re likely going to be throwing a good deal.

by KMarch on Sep 29, 2011 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually gut says Rivers to me this week.

Miami just doesn’t have the defense to shut him down, even with a few guys hurt, and I think he finally puts it together. I do like the potential shoot-out for Romo vs. the Lions though. Hopefully Suh doesn’t break his other ribs. Only person in the NFL that I could see literally ripping a QB’s head off, I’m just saying.

by CubFan90 on Sep 29, 2011 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

SD

Don’t forget…like every season, SD is a slow starter and Rivers will pick it up. I think you stick with what you know in Rivers and play him.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Don't teach a man to fish, and you feed yourself. He's a grown man. Fishing's not that hard.

For an "expert" view on Mendenhall

I went to a FF pay site a friend and I belong to. They’re pretty damn good, helped me pick up a few gems the past few years. The have Mendy ranked 22nd in a PPR league. Behind the likes of Sproles, McCluster and Mgahee and just ahead of Benson. Blount is ranked 16th.

by aces666high on Sep 29, 2011 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

Who do you start?

QB: Grossman/Hasselbeck (1)
RB: Helu, R. Grant, S. Ridley (Other back is DMC) (2)
WR: D-Jax, M. Williams (TB), Julio Jones, S. Holmes, V. Cruz, Antonio Brown (3)

Grossman
Helu, Grant
DJax, Holmes.

by KMarch on Sep 30, 2011 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks

Helu or Grant? It looks like Grant is being held out by McCarthy…

Pick 3 on the WR…

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Don't teach a man to fish, and you feed yourself. He's a grown man. Fishing's not that hard.

by Schuang0385 on Sep 30, 2011 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

My bad

thought you meant two out of that list.

Helu seems to be getting more carries than Grant. Grant hasn’t been bad this season though (arguably he’s done more with less than Starks), he just isn’t getting the attempts. Therefore, I’d go with Helu.

Hmm…DJax, Holmes for sure. That 3rd is hard to decide. Antonio Brown should be in a shoot-out, but you can’t necessarily count on him. Cruz is a one-week wonder imo, so that leaves JJ and M Williams. Williams is a true #1, so that seems to be the safest play, though that game could be a blow out. However, both JJ and Roddy are practically due a TD if not this Sunday then soon.

by KMarch on Sep 30, 2011 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey guys, Pats fan here. Will Roddy White play this weekend? I heard that he didn't practice yesterday.

Roddy White should play

Listed as questionable but he usually plays w/that tag. He has been known to take a day off or two during the week. If he doesn’t play and u need a WR, look at Eric Decker of the broncos. Has had good #’s the past couple of weeks.

by aces666high on Sep 30, 2011 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Got Decker in another one of my FF's. I was wondering if i should replace WHite with Meachem.

Brees spreads the ball around so much to be fully sold on that idea.

If Roddy plays (which all of us here in Falcoholic nation expect him to)

he’ll get the ball, no doubt.

Keep an eye on the final injury report today.

Must have missed it, sorry.

I think this is a basically a coin flip that’s bound to shoot you in the face either way. I’d say Henderson b/c if anything he’s more dangerous with Colston on the field, but who knows how many targets he gets. I don’t see any reason why they’d need to rush Colston back in this game, though, so I think he plays sparingly just to get his legs back.

by KMarch on Sep 30, 2011 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

My gut tells my the same thing.

Thanks K.

Henderson is the play in my opinion.

Should i start Julio Jones against the Seahawks or Deion Branch against the Raiders?

Julio.

He’s becoming a major target here and is ripe to have a break out game, this would be the one. Branch is well, branch. He’s not even Brady’s 3rd best target.

Rule #1: Double tap.

by Ball Hawk on Sep 30, 2011 5:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

But he is reliable. And with H-Bomb missing another week i figured he'd be a more consistent target.

But i will go with Julio.

Also guys, between Sproles, Tate, Forte and Hightower, who should be the two in my starting line up?

I was thinking of Sproles for my W/R as he rushes as well as receives and returns kicks against the terrible Jags. Forte does all those things more fluently except for returns and he faces the Panthers. Tate may not be as good an option with Foster starting. Especially against the Steelers. And Hightower receives and rushes as well against a Rams defense.

Forte and Hightower in my opinion.

Just don’t trust Sproles enough, and I don’t think this TD pace will stick much longer. Forte is always a must-start if you have him, and Hightower has been so good both running and catching. Helu will take some snaps away, but I like a fresh Hightower much more than a banged up one.
